Chapter Five: A Death in the Family

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

(act iii)

A DEATH IN THE FAMILY

'the descent and daddy issues'

"an all-powerful siren, imprisoned by a fork" ~ Stefan Salvatore

After the full moon and helping Mason and Tyler back home, they were a little sore from the transformation and the amount of roughhousing they did.

It was adorable, such menacing and dangerous creatures playing tag as best as they could in such a small area.

I was at home with Kat helping Davina with her homework, it was a mundane activity, but Kat made it fun with her multiple out-of-pocket jokes.

We were in the middle of laughing when a distraught Stefan came speeding into the house. Kat and I stood up, hearing his loud but slow heartbeat and the smell of blood and salt from tears wafting off him.

"What the hell happened?" Kat asked him as she helped him to a chair.

I walked over to him, checking him over in case he did get bitten, he wasn't with us, so Jules could've gotten him, but I was hoping Damon was the one.

"D-Damon, he got bit!" Stefan murmured, clutching onto Kat like a child, which is what he was. He was still that seventeen-year-old boy who loved his brother despite the things he did.

I sighed. I didn't think this would affect Stefan so much. Kat looked at me, sending me a pointed look.

"I'm sorry, Stefan," I told him, the finality in my words. There was nothing we could do without Klaus and the ritual's completion. It would be too late anyways.

Stefan looked up at me with pleading eyes and said, "Please! I know you don't like him, but there must be a way to cure him."

I sighed and softly explained, "I'm sorry, Stefan, but there's nothing we can do without Klaus and the curse broken, and the only siphoner I know who could fix this is trapped in a time loop in 1994. Even if I could do anything, I would fight against mother nature, and she would lash out unexpectedly".

Meaning someone else would die for him, and I wasn't going to take that chance.

Stefan broke down crying after hearing me. Kat and I held him in our arms, sitting on the floor with him as he mourned his brother's impending death. "I'm sorry, my love, I really am," I whispered, stroking his back.

Kat turned to me and asked, "How long does he have?"

"A few days at most, he'll start hallucinating. I'm sorry, but it would be better if we killed him. He'll be in a lot of pain and lose his memories. It's torture," I told them both. I was trying to comfort them the best I could.

______

After the death of Damon and helping Stefan bury him and saying his goodbyes. Elena had called Isobel somehow, thinking she would have a cure for Damon and help from the ritual, so John was currently here, which would help with the upcoming ritual. Jules had been trying to cause trouble with Tyler and Mason, but they knew the truth about the vampires.

I was going to pick up Davina from school when I got a phone call.

"Hello," I said, picking it up and juggling my bag and phone.

"I have your little daughter, and I want Tyler. Bring him to the wicker bridge, or she's dead." A feminine voice told me, Jules.

I laughed and asked, "Are you threatening me?"

"Yeah, I am. You're a vampire, and I'm a werewolf," she said.

"Hurt her, and I will rip your spine out and beat your dead corpse with it," I threatened, losing all the joke behavior, and hung up.

Kat and Enzo came in after hearing me lose my shit and break everything in the room."What's wrong, angel," Enzo asked me, trying to calm me down.

I turned to him and snarled, "That mutt has Vina."

His calm and concerned face dropped into an angry one, similar to mine, as did Kat's.

I sped out of the house to the bridge with the others on my heel. These mutts were going to be taught a lesson in death.

We ended up in the clearing and saw Jules standing there and stilled as we approached."Where's Tyler?" she asked, annoyed.

"Tyler won't be coming. He doesn't want to leave. His life is here with his family, which you are not," I told her as if I was going to put my brother's life on the line.

"Where is Davina?" Kat growled, looking around the empty camp.

"You know she was easy to take down. A small hit to the head, and she was out. It's a shame she isn't a vampire, but that doesn't stop her from getting a little hurt."

Enzo took a step forward, "If you hurt her again-"

He was cut off by a scream from inside the van. We all took a step forward when Jules whistled. We stopped in confusion then a bunch of mutts came out of their hiding spots.

I smirked at the others. This is going to be easy.

"Get 'em, boys," she told them, sicking the dogs on us. Then chaos ensured. Hearts were flying, as were stakes. We all split up and broke necks and sucked them dry. It was a good night to be a vampire.

After I ripped one of the mutts' heads off, I turned to Kat, who had just thrown a stake in someone's throat, and a mutt sneaked up behind her with a stake. I rotated my outreached hand, and all his bones broke with a loud snap leaving him on the floor crying and dying as Kat ripped his throat out.

She got up with blood running down her face, which was so hot. She smirked at me, and we finished the others while I sped inside to Davina.

She was in a cage like Caroline was in the show. Her head was bleeding, matting her hair with blood and dirt. She was crying.

"Blossom," I murmured as I ripped the cage door open and pulled her out. She cried into my shoulder and held me tightly.

I patted her hair, "I'm here, baby. I'm so sorry," I told her.

"I love you, mom. You truly are an angel, just like Papa Enzo said," she murmured in my hair. I smiled; she was still being a cheeky bugger.

I pulled her up, and we walked out of the van to Enzo, killing Brady while Jules cried as Kat held her down.

"Don't kill that one. We need her for the ritual," I told Kat, who pouted.

After a while, Enzo took Davina back home so she could recover while Kat and I burnt all the bodies and put Jules in one of the car's trunk.

"So, how's Stefan," I asked Kat. I had stayed my distance because I wasn't much help, but Kat was happy to help get Stefan's mind off it.

"He's sad, but he's moving on. The others have been a good help, just being there for him. He knows we all die, but he didn't expect it." She told me, placing the last body on the fire pit.

I nodded, "Maybe we could have a little date night and just chill."

She nodded with a smile, "Sounds good. I'm sure Davina will appreciate it."

I sighed, "I can't believe they took a kid."

"Yeah, these mutts are a little fucked up. Do you think she'll be alright?" she asked.

"She will be. She just needs some time and a little space." I told her I'll make her have a break from school.

Stefan POV:

Damon was lying on the bed while I watched him sweat and shiver from my seat. I poured blood into a glass and placed it on his lips, encouraging him to drink. Blood heals.

"Come on, brother," I told him as he drank the blood. He had been this way for a while, and his injury grew and worsened. Ana had said there was nothing to be done, no cure. All I could do was make him comfortable and wait or stake him.

I couldn't believe he was dying; we had been together for a hundred years. We've been brothers for longer.  I didn't care that he wanted to make me miserable. I loved him. I still saw that young curly-haired boy who was sweet and gentlemanly. The type of man who protected me, who let me have the last piece of cake because he knew I loved it. He would protect me from our father and his anger.

But Katerina had changed him. Being a vampire changed him. He had matured and grown cold, but there was still humanity there. I knew it. It was deep down, but it was there. I hoped it was there.

"Do it, brother. It's been too long," Damon murmured as sweat flowed down his face.

I moved over and sat on the bed, holding him like we used to when we were younger. I ran my hand through his straight hair. With a close connection to his head, I inserted us in a dream, a memory from our human lives. Back at the Salvatore Estate, the sun shone, and grass swayed with the slight wind. The trees stood tall and willowy, not like they did now. The world was changing, metal towers were being built, and the trees were dying.

Damon and I sat on the grass, fiddling with the grass. I knew he realized what was happening, that his time was finally ending.

"I've missed this, the sun and just existing in time being human. How I wish we never met Katherine and stayed brothers, stayed human," he said absentmindedly as he closed his eyes with his head tilted back with a blissful smile.

A smile I haven't seen for a while.

"Me too, and I'm sorry," I told him, watching us as he enjoyed himself for one last time. I was apologizing for everything, for making him a vampire without asking, for driving him away with my ripper ways, for Katerina loving me and not him. I was sorry for everything.

"I know, brother, and I'm sorry too," he told me, slinging his arm around my shoulder and bringing me close. "It's beautiful," he murmured, staring at the sun and breathing deeply.

"I know," I told him as a tear slithered down my cheek as I clutched the stake in my right hand, and my other went through his hair and stabbed him as I choked on a sob. I watched as veins sluthered up his face, his skin turning grey, and his heartbeat stopped.

My brother was dead. He has been for a long time.

________

We returned to the house, and most of everyone was there watching a movie with a burrito-wrapped Davina cuddling Davina.

Liz was at work, from what I could tell, but everyone was there. Kat and I returned and showered together, washing the blood and dirt off our bodies.

I watched Kat getting dressed and was ready to tell her the news. I was unsure how she would take this, but I needed to tell her. I had told Bonnie and Liz but no one else. I didn't need the others to jump me.

"My womb works, and I can make yours work too," I whispered bluntly. I didn't know how to break it down. No beating around the bush.

She blinked momentarily, her brain physically short-circuiting, but she beamed, hugged me, and squeezed with her strength. I was pulled up with my legs dangling up, and I chuckled as my heel fell off.

She finally placed me down and looked at me with wide watery eyes, "Can you really do it?" she asked, pleading for it to be true.

I nodded, brought her to the bed, and did the spell, making her lay shirtless on the bed. I invoked Father's help and spoke a long Latin chant; she had a working womb.

I smiled as tears flowed down her face as she put her shirt back on. She looked so vulnerable.

"Just wait for a day or two before jumping into a bed, and be careful now."

She nodded and hugged me, and we laughed as we descended the stairs. Knowing what happened, Davina and Bonnie smiled at us and hugged a happy Kat on the couch, pushing the others away.

I sat in Enzo's lap and ignored his questioning look. "Where's Alaric?" I asked, noticing he wasn't there.

"He went home and needed to do some work," Jeremy told me from the floor as he threw popcorn in Stefan's mouth.

I haven't seen him for a while. He was always so busy being a teacher. I didn't think it would be this hard to manage everyone. Love does make you do crazy things.

The Next Day ~

3rd POV:

Our lovely Jenna took our history-loving original for a tour around the Fell property. He was looking for the witch site where most of them were burned. It was a massive magic site and was currently the residence of one Bonnie and Shelia Bennett. Nobody knew about the site, so it would come as to shock to others.

"The old Fell property actually starts just beyond that fence," Jenna told him, pointing to a nearby fence as they walked on crunchy leaves.

Elijah nodded sagely and mocked, "Ah, the Fells. One of the Founding Families."

Jenna furrowed her brows and asked, "Why do you say it like that?"

"My research showed me that this area was settled almost two centuries earlier. It was a migration of townsfolk from the northeast, um, it was Salem, to be precise." Elijah informed her like the intellectual he was.

"Massachusetts? As in the witch trials?" Jenna asked, playing dumb.

Elijah nodded and split the truth, "Which means the ever-lauded founding families... didn't actually find anything."

He would know he was a real founder of the land and his family.

"Well, I bet the men made a big deal about being founders back in 1860. Men are very territorial." Jenna told him with a chuckle, not noticing Mason, Bonnie, and Damian coming down to them,

Eliah did, smirking; he replied, "Yes, they are."

Mason then walked up to the pair and kissed Jenna on the head, giving Elijah a look. He knew what he was and wasn't excited that Jenna, a human, was hanging around him. It had nothing to do with the fact that Elijah was powerful and hot, absolutely nothing.

Bonnie and Damian held each other's hands with a soft smile, and Bonnie shyly smiled at Elijah.

Jenna, visbling, beamed at Mason and introduced them, "Elijah, Bonnie, and Damain. This is my boyfriend, Mason Lockwood. Apart from the founding family," she giggled. At the same time, she said 'founding family,' remembering Elijah's words.

"I thought I would tag along. I haven't been around here in so long. I remember a party here, though, where we all got wasted, and you made a fool of Logan. Good times" he said in nostalgia while Bonnie and Damian shrugged, and Damian said, "We were forced."

Jenan ignored the duo because she was the one who forced them to come. She laughed along and slapped his chest, "Logan was such a dick. You always supplied the alcohol," she remembered,

Elijah, Damian, and Bonnie watched them giggle and be lovebirds; after a few moments, Mason asked, "Where to next?"

"I'm pretty curious about the freed slave property owners. Some say, you know, the descendants of the slaves are the true keepers of American history." Elijah told Jenna, who nodded and replied, "Well, I only brought the surveys. I got that list in the car. Just give me a sec."

Jenna walked off to her car, leaving the four together.

"What are you doing here," Mason asked, protective over Jenna.

Elijah rolled his eyes and said, "You don't have to be jealous. I don't really pursue younger women."

Bonnie coughs and arches a brow at Elijah, who rolls his eyes amused and tells Mason, "It's a joke, Mason, lighten up." he pats him on the shoulder and walks away with Bonnie and Damian, who giggle.

"You have such a bad sense of humor," Bonnie tells him, like Damian's.

Elijah looks at Damian expectantly, but he avoids eye contact making him offended. "I'm funny," Elijah defended himself, looking at them again, seeing their deadpan faces, "What? I am"

"Keep telling yourself that," Damian says, sharing a look with Bonnie, who laughs.
