Thief on the Run
My sneakers pounded on the wet concrete pavement as I raced through the city. Rain was coming down in droves but that didn't slow me down. I glanced behind me and glimpsed the cop chasing after me. My heartbeat sped up as I ran faster. I admit, this was my fault. I had stolen that bag of chips from the convenience store.
I would've paid for it if I'd had the money, I thought shamefully.
He was closing in on me now. I swiveled my head around frantically, looking for somewhere to hide. Suddenly, my eyes landed on an alley up ahead. My legs felt like they were on fire as I pushed myself to run even faster. The officer behind me kept running as well, his feet landing hard on the pavement. I smiled in triumph as I rounded the corner of the alley...but that smile soon dropped off my face as I looked up ahead of me.
It was a dead-end...and there was no way out of here. I stopped in my tracks as a feeling of hopelessness filled me.
"STOP RIGHT THERE!" the cop said from behind me.
I squeezed my eyes tightly together and backed up against the wall, the hood of my jacket falling over my wet hair. There was nowhere to run. I was trapped. The sky rumbled with thunder above me as the cop stepped closer, his gun raised. I swallowed the lump in my throat just as a streak of lightning lit up his features.
His hair was dark brown and I could just make out his sapphire-blue eyes. He was gorgeous. Well...for a cop.
"Look, I'm not going to hurt you. Just give me back the food." he said, his voice deep and calm.
"I...I don't have anything to eat..." I told him, shaking from the cold rain that had seeped into my clothes.
His eyes softened and he lowered the gun.
"No one does these days..." he sighed, looking me in the eyes,"But if you come back with me, I can get you some food. We have some at the hospital still."
I looked up at him in confusion. Why would he offer a thief food?
"But...I stole it. Aren't you going to arrest me now?" I asked, hesitantly.
He shook his head at me, putting the gun back in its holster.
"No. No, today, I'll let you off with a warning. I know you didn't mean it."
I nodded, stepping away from the stone wall as he motioned for me to follow him. I absentmindedly stuck my hands in my pockets as we walked to the hospital together in silence. When we finally arrived, he opened the door for me and I stepped inside. The smell of plastic and disinfectant hit me as I looked at the empty room. It's like all of the people had just picked up and left.
He walked down the hall and I walked along behind him until we reached the deserted cafeteria. I sat down in one of the vacant chairs as he walked over to the snack machine. He pressed some buttons and a few candy bars fell out. I smiled as he reached out and handed me a Snickers bar.
"Thank you." I murmured as I hurriedly opened the wrapper and bit into it.
He sat down in the chair across from me and sighed tiredly. When I finally finished my candy bar, the sun was just starting to come up and light drifted in through the windows. His sapphire eyes studied me as he held out hand for me to shake.
"I'm Jake Riley." he said to me as my eyes met his.
I smiled at him and shook his hand.
"I'm Angela Shaw." I said, biting my lip.
He smirked at me and butterflies erupted in my stomach. I almost laughed out loud then. I should steal things more often...
Note: Also, I hope you don't mind, @angela_5sosfam, that I used your name in this :)
