Chapter Fifteen

Kristopher

Desperate?

No, it hadn't gotten to that.

Impatient?

Maybe.

Is this how Micah was going to save her family? Whatever she was going to try was go to be fruitless but she could atleast make an effort.

I groaned staring at my watch once again, it had been twelve minutes since this meeting started and an hour since I called her but still no feedback.

I stared down at my phone and then at Mr Powers who was making the presentation.

Pinching the bridge of my nose, I stood up with my phone in my hand.

"Give me a minute." I walked out of the conference room.

I dailed her number given to me by my secretary. It rang twice before she finally picked the call.

"H-hello." I hadn't heard her voice in a while now, four days to be exact.

"What are you doing? Are you aware that you have limited time left, huh? Where have you been? I want you to come to my office now."

Why did I sound so needy?

It wasn't like me.

There was silence at her end. After a few seconds she finally responded.

"I can't come now, I have work at the cafe. I'm not going to come now, I'll come when I'm less busy. Good bye Mr Lyon."

She cut the call?

Her audacity.

I shut my eyes tightly and leaned on the wall. My mind was a mess, I couldn't think straight. I needed a smoke.

'Reschedule the meeting.'

I sent the message to my secretary as I walked into the elevator.

****

The streets were filled with music and a whole lot of decorations. Tomorrow is the first of December.

There was a time, once in my life when that day held a special place in my heart. But now, it was just like any other annoying day.

I stood by a bench inhaling on my cigar as I browsed the internet.

Camille's case was ongoing, her parents were devastated. Her death was a big loss to the entertainment industry.

She was proud, full of herself, snubby and a lot of other things but she didn't deserve to die. She could be caring at times and a little bit too clingy.

The snow had stopped falling but the streets were filled with them. The air was sharp and somewhat painful to breath in.

You could barely spot road because of the snow, and at this time, people rarely drove Thier cars.

Previous snowflakes which fell on my hair had melted, causing my hair to wetten.

Intertwining  my hand in my dark black hair I untangled some strands.

The wind had began whizzing, this was my cue to leave. I threw the cigar butt on the ground and stepped on it pressing it to the melting snow.

With a sigh, I proceeded into the building.

****

The clock ticking had never sound so annoying as it did right now.

I glanced at my wristwatch with a groan. I've been stuck in the office since morning, making up for missing out on work. I had lost a full days stock and I'll be paying for it.

Groaning again, I unbuttoned the second button of my shirt, skimming through the sheets.

It was late, yes, but I'd been here later. I was famished, tired and sleepy but it was just my luck.

The intercom rang loudly from a corner of the office.

"Mr Lyon, I'll be off now, see you tomorrow sir." Tanisha, my secretary called my attention.

Sure, I was the only one left in the building.

I rubbed my forehead with a yawn, taking a sip of the bottled water on my desk.

I picked up my phone, about to switch off the lights in the building but remembered it would be a disadvantage to me when leaving the building.

I groaned once more as I continued with my work.

****

The clock kept ticking distracting me from my work. As much as I would prefer to leave the work, I couldn't. If I don't get it done, no one will. They weren't as experienced and hard working as me.

I chuckled to myself as I worked, no one was as good as me.

I cringed suddenly hearing a creak from below.

I was the only one here wasn't I?

The only people who knew the passcode were the receptionist, Tanisha and the security.

I dialed the  official secretary number on the telephone and heard it ring for minutes without a response. I tried the receptionists after that without I response as well.

The security had no reason to be here so I didn't bother phoning him.

Maybe it was the wind, being scared was unprofessional.

Who was I kidding?

There was no way the wind would get into this building.

What if it was a thief so something worse?

I had little or no strength physically but had hella lot financially.

I stood up from my seat, I had had it. I was going to call the security.

I heard the phone ring before he finally picked.

"Yes sir."

I was a bit relieved hearing his voice.

"Is anyone in the perimeter? Search, double search the compound to make sure!" I instructed cutting the call.

My relief ended once the call was cut but I had to get back to work.

I paced around the office for a minute before turning back to my desk.

Slowly, very slowly I heard my office door creak as it opened.

I stood fixed in a spot with my back facing the door, was I sure I wanted to turn?

Would I like what I met?

I'd hate to see my face in the mirror right now, I was sure I looked horrified.

"Hey." I heard a calm, low voice which I recognized too well.

Micah?

I sighed out in relief as my as my pale green eyes met her brown.

"What are you doing here?" That was the first thing that escaped my mouth meeting the person that I'd hate to admit but enjoyed her company.

She rolled her eyes taking a step further into the office.

"I stopped over at your house but you weren't there so I figured the only other place you'd be is the office." She paused.

"Being the nice person I am, I guessed you'd be hungry so I got burgers." My gaze fell the the brown fast food take away bags she carried.

"So, don't tell me you don't like burgers as well." She walked to the desk dropping the bag.

I was starving, what  were burgers gonna do?

"If this is about changing my mind, you're wasting your time." I stated blankly, walking to her.

"Don't be so sure, I can be very convincing you know?"

I smirked at her ignorance and her refusal to accept reality.

"Not to me."

***

"Hmm" Micah hummed loudly as I worked. I remembered how distracting she could be last time she came.

"What do you want?" I looked up from my work. She was a bad influence, the office was littered with empty packets of chips, burgers and cans of juice, most of them weren't mine anyway.

"Let's play a game" she suggested with a toothy smile.

Seriously?

A game?

I'm busy with work and she's suggesting to play a game.

"If it isn't already very obvious, I'm busy." I deadpanned.

"You're always busy" she grumbled. "Its a really lame excuse."

I chose too ignore.

After a few more minutes of silence, she spoke again.

"Let's toss a coin. If it lands at tail, I'll leave your office but if it lands at head, you'll have to play."

Hmm, tempting.

"I'm head." I spoke out.

"Sure." She snorted pulling  out a coin from her jacket.

I hissed at her immaturity .

"OK," she whispered before tossing the coin.

And, that is how I found myself playing a game of 45 questions with Micah at midnight in my office.
