•Chapter 8: Everly•
After an unknown amount of time, the throbbing pain at the back of my head brings me back to reality after my forced nap. As soon as the memories of the night before came flooding back, my senses quickly returned before my eyes flashed open, only to find two boys smirking at down me. Confusion filled every inch of my body as I quickly sat up to see a numerous amount of boys watching me from behind. Another wave of pain from the back of my head broke through my lost state before I attempted to reach back with my hand to address it, only to find my arms bound in front of me. My attention stayed on the rope around my wrists for a long moment before it was drawn to the brown-haired boy in front of me when he cleared his throat.
"What's your name, boy?" he asked as he squatted down to about a foot away from me. The two of us studied each other for a long moment before the cocky smirk on his face was quickly replaced irritated at my lack of response. The next thing I knew, he roughly grabbed my chin and forced me to look him in the eyes before brought the level of his voice down to a whisper. "You think you're so smart, don't you? Think you're better than the rest of us here. But don't worry, we'll break you. Just like the others."
My eyes stayed plastered onto his as he gave me one last lookover before getting to his feet and turning to the blonde boy behind him, who had a scar running diagonally across his face. The two had an inaudible conversation before the brunette walked away from us. After watching his retreating figure disappear into the surrounding forest, my eyes fell on the blonde boy, who was approaching me with a club resting on his shoulder and another rope in his hands. As soon as he reached me, he squatted down before placing his means of protection on the ground next to him then used the rope to tie my ankles together.
"Just to make sure you don't try to run," he smirked as he gave the rope one final tug to make sure it was secure before he went to the other side of the clearing to sit on another long while the rest of the boys left the camp.
As I sat there with nothing but the sounds of the forest to break the stillness, my mind races with thoughts of how the brunette boy could break me more than I was already broken. My hope shattered the moment Jason left my side. My sanity soon followed when I became the only surviving knight of my squadron. In my eyes, there was nothing left of me to break. After letting out a long sigh, I tried to relax on the log they left me on before another thought accrued to me.
How many of these boys did he have "to break" to get them to follow him?
As I continued to reflect on their leader's words, a piece of paper came out of nowhere and landed right in front of me. After a moment of just staring at the scroll, I look up to see if it caught the attention of the boy left in camp with me, only to find him fast asleep on his chosen log. Another sigh escaped me as I leaned over to grab the paper before unrolling it after struggling for what felt like forever to reveal a note.
If you are alone, stomp your foot twice. If it's just the tall, blonde there with you, once. If Pan or anyone else, not at all.
Once I finished reading the note, I looked around to try to figure out where the note came from, only to be greeted by the silence of the surrounding forest. The confusion I felt when I first met the brunette returns as I reread the note a few more times before staring off into space and letting my thoughts consume me once again. After coming to the conclusion that whoever gave me this note was probably better than these boys and their leader, I stomped my foot once then wait in silence for more instructions.
When the stillness of the island is the only thing that responds, I feel the small bit of emotion within me quickly fade before something small hit the back of my head, causing me to look up to see the girl I saw earlier up in a tree. At the sight of who I assumed was my savior, I sent a smile her way, only for her to put her figure to her lips in return. After sending her a quick nod, I gestured over to where Felix slept, causing a small smile to form on her face before she slipped down the tree then made her way over to me.
"I saw you when I landed here. You were running from some of the boys," I whispered as soon as she reached me, "how did you get away? Who are you?"
"Stop talking," she quietly told me in an annoyed tone, "do you want them to know I'm here?"
A moment of silence passed between us as I stared at her while she glared back at me. After an eternity of us just studying each other passed before she glanced over to the blonde boy, who was beginning to stir, causing fear to rise inside me before I found the courage to speak again.
"Who are you?" I repeated, drawing her attention away from the boy on the log and back to me.
"A friend and someone Pan hates. So, again. Quiet," she responded with an eye roll before squatted down to untie the ropes around my ankles and wrists.
After she lets the ropes fall to the floor below us, she grabbed my wrists and forced me to my feet just as the boy at the other side of camp woke up, causing the two of us to quickly look over to the boy behind us.
"You're actually doing it," he sighed as he rubbed his hands against his temples, "it's a good thing you have your looks going for you because you're ideas are crazy."
"Stop. You're making me blush. I'll see you later," she smiled before sending him a quick wink while the fear inside me is quickly replaced with confusion.
Before I could even open my mouth, her grip on my wrist tightened before she dragged me out of the camp and through the forest. After a few minutes of jumping over tree roots and avoiding random holes in the earth, the scent in the air changed from the natural forest smell to the saltiness of the beach. When I felt the sand beneath my feet, the girl's grip tightened once again then she sprinted straight towards the vines against the rock wall.
"What are you doing?!" I shouted.
"Just trust me!" she yelled before we ran straight through the vines into a small clearing hidden by a circle of rocks with a small pool of water in the center.
While I continued to take in my new surroundings, the grip around my wrist disappears before I watched the blonde girl as she made her way into the center of the cove out of the corner. Once she reached the sand next to the small pool of water, she sat on one of the sand that surrounds it before she turned her attention back to me, who's smiling back at me as if she didn't just save me from whatever Pan was planning to do to me.
"What is this place?" I asked, not breaking eye contact with the girl in front of me.
"I call it Forever Cove," she responded.
"Forever Cover."
"Because I've been on Neverland forever and I can't see myself getting off of it. My name's Everly Jones."
"Samuel," I replied before pausing for a long moment then letting out a quiet sigh, "Samuel Wilbert. But most people just call me Sam."
After looking around the rock-enclosed clearing to make sure I was truly safe, I went to sit next to her on the sand before she told me the story of how she ended up on Neverland before she escaped Pan and his Lost Boys, as she called them, with the help of Felix, who was the boy who was supposed to make sure I didn't get loose. As soon as Everly finished explaining everything about the island, she made it clear that we had to stay away from where we just came from unless I wanted to go back and stay with them instead.
To my surprise, Everly reminded me a lot of Jason and the other young knights that I trained, making me see that there were still people in this world worth protecting. She was so kind and selfless, risking everything to make sure I got out of there. At that moment, I knew I made the right choice of trusting her.
"I was a knight before I was brought here," I told her.
"Oh, a knight?" she responded before a small smile made its way onto her face, "knightly skills can be very useful."
We both laugh and, after we calm down, I feel my curiosity take over once again.
"So," I said as a wave of awkwardness fills my body, "what's with you and that tall kid that was back at the camp?"
"It's kinda complicated," she responded as her fingers began to intertwine with each other, "after he helped me escape, we would meet up so he could tell me what parts of the island to avoid that day. After a while, things just kinda clicked."
A smile made its way onto my face, as well as hers, and before hers quickly fell, signaling that she probably wanted to ask me something serious.
"What about your family?" she asked.
"Don't have one anymore," I answered as I looked away from her blue eyes and to the sand beneath my feet.
After letting the stillness of the cove surround us once again, tears began to form in my eyes at the memories I shared with the knights I grew close to before I felt a hand placed on my shoulder, causing me to glanced up at Everly to find her looking back at me with a small apologetic smile on her face.
"You do now."
