" 𝕿eddy, no! Give it back!".

Darlene picks the scrawny little six year old up, midway between his rampant running through her mother's living room.

Bear fake sobs, hiding his face in his hands when she hushes at him, arms wrapped around his tiny frame as she gets them settled on the couch.

She pries her phone out of his small fingers tightly wrapped around the device which only seems to fuel into his fake crying, his voice growing loud making him topple over himself for "added effect".

"You sneaky little booger. I know you're not actually crying", she rolls her eyes.

He huffs sitting back against the cushions to glare at her with adorably large blue eyes full of mock anger which to his six year old brain seems valid.

"You never play with me anymore! It's because of that", he throws an exaggerated finger towards her phone.

She gasps dramatically, "Liar. You spent all last weekend at my house, playing. Lying isn't healthy, Bearie".

He pouts, rubbing his chin with his thumb.

"Mum says lyin's bad".

Darlene nods in agreement, "And she's right".

His face scrunches up as he looks away, twiddling with the ends of his sweater.

"But I miss you, Derry".

Her heart breaks a little at the sound of a little quiver in his voice, he keeps his gaze away staring down quietly with the pout firm on his face.

She never realised that her ups-and-downs don't just impact her but the people around her too.

She hadn't been spending much time with her brother in the past few months because life hadn't been very easy and she wanted to pick up her pieces, fix herself so to speak, before really hanging out with Bear.

It's just that she wasn't sure if she wanted to show that unstable side of hers to a little kid, especially when she wasn't even a hundred percent certain if she'd be able to pretend that everything was alright.

But now that she's started to really better, she will never ever let herself become distant again.

"Hey, I'm sorry", she reaches out, holding his significantly smaller hands in hers.

He looks up, silently.

"I'm not going anywhere again, you hear me? I'll visit as often as I can".

His eyes light up, "Promise?".

She smiles kissing the top of his head.

"Promise".
