13| WE TOOK CARE OF THAT
"It's there?" Limbrey whispered to Aria as they watched Rafe and Reinfield attempt to take the golden cross out of the back of the truck. Aria glanced her way with a minor smirk but hadn't said anything.
"You guys are doing great." Aria spoke up a second later as Reinfield and Rafe both groaned and moaned at the weight of the cross.
"I don't believe it." Carla gapped as they had it laid up against the side of the truck. Aria rubbed Rafes back, leaning against his arm.
"I told you I'd get it for you, didn't I?" Reinfield asked through breaths, smiling at Carla.
The blonde smiled, "You said you would, and.. and you did."
Rafe watched closely as Reinfield cut the tarp around the cross, "Before we do this. I just wanna remind you of the deal, okay?"
"You really are your fathers son, aren't you?" Carla looked Rafes way as he rose his eyebrows her way, "Talking about deals in a moment like this."
"We have a life to get on with, so, yeah." Aria sassed her as she crossed her arms.
"I showed you the mural. We get our cut." Rafe reminded her of the discussion.
"The deal is as we discussed, Rafe." the older woman spoke with a hint of annoyance in her tone.
"Better be." he added.
"You'll get your cut. The both of you." Carla told the pair with a nod, looking at Aria, "Perhaps you'll take care of that grandmother of yours."
Aria gave a fake thinking face, "Nah, don't think I will."
Carla looked at the now bare cross, approaching it slowly with a minor smile. Rafe nudged Aria, getting her attention as she glanced up at him. He gave her a minor smile, a way of saying this was theirs and they had the entire world in the palm of their hands. Aria smiled back.
Carla dropped her crutches, running her hands across the gold. Aria cleared her throat, "I'd be carful where you touch at on that thing."
Rafe elbowed her suddenly.
"Inside this cross is the shroud. And whoever touches the hem of the garment shall be healed." Carla spoke, for what felt like the hundredth time. Rafe and Reinfield shared a look, but kept silent. Carla pulled the key from her jacket pocket, staring at the small key hole, "It's time for a miracle."
"She's probably gonna die soon anyways." Aria whispered to Rafe as she watched Carla, "Whats a few years of being healed gonna do?"
"You're evil." Rafe shook his head at her words.
Carla struggled to twist the key, tugging on it tremendously. Reinfield walked forward, "Here. Let me help you get it."
"No! It's meant for a Limbrry!" she hollered at him, making him back off with a look of anger across his face. Aria could imagine she'd hit her with her own crutches if she'd said that to her. The lock clicked, Carla slowly pulling the little box open as the trio inched forward.
A moth flew from the empty cross.
Aria had to snort with a nod, "Seems about right."
"The magic scarf was eaten by bugs." Rafe mocked, leaning down slightly with a squint of his face. Reinfield started to laugh, getting louder and louder by the second.
Carla spun around and smacked him across the face, "How dare you mock mw?"
Reinfield grabbed Carlas shoulders, throwing her on the ground.
"Hey, hey, hey!" Rafe cut in with wide eyes. Aria shook her head and pinched the bridge of her nose, leaning against the truck now.
"Easy, Carla." Reinfield warned her.
"That's it. You're cut off. You're not getting a penny!" she spit at him from down on the ground.
He leaned down some, "I don't need your money. I've got the cross now."
"Woah, woah." Aria warned as she came off the truck, "I don't think you do, river rat."
"Don't worry, you'll still get your cut." Reinfield waved her off as he jumped up into the truck.
"Rafe, help me." Carla held her hand out for him to help her up. Rafe ignored her, lifting the cross with Aria and Reinfield to get it into the back of the truck, "Reinfield! Reinfield! Get over here and help me up."
"You got it?" Aria asked as she huffed, pushing the rest of the cross up and looking at Rafe, throwing the tarp up in with it.
"Help you up? You're lucky I don't back up over you." Reinfield mocked her way, leaning out the truck slightly. Aria gasped as a shot went through the air, backing up against the truck, two more going.
"Rafe!" Aria called as she looked his way, Reinfields body hitting the truck floor from inside, "Are you okay?"
He held his chest a second, "Yeah, yeah, yeah. You good?"
He grabbed her arm to pull her close, taking a scan himself before looking Limbreys way. Reinfield gapped for air inside of the truck, blood pouring everywhere. Aria blinked at his condition, glancing Carlas way as she dropped the gun.
"Don't just stand there with your mouth open. Help me up." Carla spoke from the ground, leaning on her side some, "Aria, Rafe! He wasn't a good man. He's not one of us. Come on."
Aria walked her way, taking hold of the small gun by her side. Rafe bend down to grab her hand, going to help her up before leaning down himself, a minor grin on his face as he pulled his hand free.
"Karma." Aria mocked down at Limbrey, sticking the gun in her waistband as Rafe took hold of her hand.
"You ready?" he asked her as Carla called for them from the ground.
"Absolutely." Aria agreed as he shut the back doors, "I saw this one coming."
Carla called for them again, but neither paid her any mind.
"Just us now." Rafe cracked a grin as he circled the truck to open the door, "Yeah?"
"Yeah." Aria agreed as she jumped up into the passengers seat, leaning over to peak his lips.
"You better shoot me now because there will not be a place that you can hide from me! Get back here!" Limbrey called as Rafe went around to get in on his side, buckling up and putting his hand on Arias leg again.
"Why don't I find her words intimidating at all?" Aria spoke as a Rafe started the truck up again, "Couldn't be the fact that she can't even walk or anything."
"Obviously not." Rafe added into her words before he drove out of the storage unit, "Get my phone for me, call Rose."
Aria reached into his front pocket, pulling his phone out and unlocking it with ease. His lack of password made it easy, finding Rose's name and putting her on speaker.
"Hey, Rose, I got the.. the cross of, um, the cross thing that they were looking for, I got it!" Rafe called after she picked up, drumming his hand on the wheel, "Our ballroom days aren't over, Rose, okay? This thing is covered in diamonds."
"Wait, what about Limbrey and the others?" Rose asked from the other line.
"Don't worry about them." Rafe reassured her.
"We took care of that." Aria added in, having no clue the fear that flew through Rose at the thought of what Aria and Rafe could take care of.
"What does that mean?" She questioned on the other line.
"It means don't worry about it, okay?" Rafe asked her in annoyance, speeding up down the empty road, "They're taken care of. They're out of the deal, all right? I did this, with Aria, on our own."
"Did you hurt them?" Rose spoke up again.
"No. No, I didn't." he spoke, and Aria had to laugh.
"Did Aria?" Rose asked again.
"Dammit, Rose, no, okay? Why are you worrying so much?" Aria spoke up as she waved her hands around, "Now you can live your days with money and all the wine coolers you want, all right?"
Rafe laughed alongside her, scaring Rose from the other line as she listened to the two.
"Both of you, go home. I need you to stay out of trouble until the morning. We're leaving tomorrow." Rose came through the line a second later, clearly not finding anything as funny as Aria and Rafe did.
"Rose, did you hear what I just said? Huh? We got the cross! We don't have to leave now!" Rafe yelled at her, Aria holding the phone closer to his mouth.
"There are bigger things going on, Rafe. You'll see. I just need you to trust me." Rose sighed from the other line.
"What's bigger then seven feet of gold?" Aria asked in annoyance, "I don't like how you're making me feel, Rose."
"We're done! Endgame! It's over!" Rafe called alongside Arias words.
"Go home. I'll meet you there." Rose hung up on them, the line going dead.
Aria looked Rafes way, reaching over to rub his right shoulder, "We can handle this. I know it."
