For those who don't know the original work, don't worry, I will take inspiration for the sole purpose of making this story, as I want to focus on Y/n's character and her intertwined relationships with Sebastian and Ominis. For this reason, the characters have reached the age of maturity in their Hogwarts' fifth year.
Thank you all for the attention and I wish you a pleasant reading!

London, 1890. Your normal, muggle life was just peaceful, almost perfect to be true and that was thanks to your father. Although he was an ordinary doctor in the city alleys, you were grateful to learn an art that, not long before, was intended only for a purely male audience...you were studying medical books with great dedication, so that in the future, you could become a capable doctor and help people just like your father.
But not everything was rosy as everyone thought and you were hiding a dark side of your past, which you wanted to forget at all costs. Until your eighteenth birthday arrived and with it, a mysterious letter from a world you didn't want to belong to in any way.
"Dear Y/n Burns. We are pleased to inform you, that you are ready to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as a fifth-year student..."
You wanted to burn it instantly, without even finishing reading it. The truth was, you were a half-blood because of your mother, a former Hogwarts student and powerful witch who faked a normal life by marrying a muggle doctor and having a baby girl, before being incarcerated in Azkaban indefinitely...and who had condemned her, were the same ones who had transformed her into a monster, as she had a predisposition for the Dark Arts even as a novice.
A Slytherin one, to be exact. Because of this name, your mother was forever doomed and now they had come to get you too.
«You must go Y/n. You are worth more than this and even your mother knew it–»
«Please, don't say it, dad. Don't say this is what she wanted, because that's definitely not what I want! I will never set foot in that gypsy place...»
You had argued with your father about your admission at Hogwarts and what's more, you would have been sent to the fifth year, without knowing anything about potions and spells; you didn't want to become a witch like your mother, but at the same time, you could no longer live a normal life with the awareness of not being normal anymore and so, you reluctantly packed your bags. For your father's sake.
When September 1st arrived, a certain Professor Eleazar Fig was coming to accompany you into this new world, which most Muggles didn't even know existed...and as 'wonderful' as it might be for anyone else, you would have preferred not to know it yourself.
You hugged your father one last time and in that gesture, you felt how worried he was for you and that he didn't want to let you go to a place so far and unknown to him. But you reassured him nothing bad would happen to you and that even in the worst place on Earth, you would always give your best.
Because no one could change who you really were.
You would have left at night and for the journey, you were wearing a beige coat and a classic clothing worthy of a London lady, atypical for a student of witchcraft; as usual, you had tied your wavy hair in a french braid, which fell down to your nape with such elegance. There was also your black bow on top of your head, you always had it when you went out and it was the only thing your mother had left you, before the nightmare began.
You still remembered your father's shocked expression, as those people took the woman away from her husband and six-year-old daughter...again, you were about to indulge in bad memories, when a carriage appeared and an elderly man approached you with a hasty step.
«Ah! It appears we are almost ready to depart. It's a pity we didn't have time to spend on spell-casting together, Miss Burns...»
But your answer was anything but subtle.
«After the sudden departure of my mother, I doubt I would have wanted to do her same job, but I assume you already know my sad story, professor.»
Fig listened to your words before letting out a sigh, he already knew your condition very well and couldn't possibly blame you for that; on the contrary, he tried to dissuade you from the hostile path that you were intending to take, once you entered the doors of Hogwarts.
«Problem is not the existence of magic Miss Burns, but who wields it. I'm sure you will become a better witch than her and Hogwarts will help you with that.»
You stared at him, before finally following him in complete silence, not that you didn't believe in his goodness, but you had some doubts about the school itself. And yet, you were stunned to see the carriage rise into the sky to reach the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, leaving London and all your dreams behind.
The flight lasted all night. But when you reopened your eyes, it was due to a strange vibration you felt near you and you saw Professor Fig holding a strange, cylindrical object in his hand, trying in vain to open it.
«It looks like goblin metal. Whatever magic protects this is powerful indeed and the symbol...!»
«What's that glow?» You said staring intently at it. The engraved symbol gave off a blue light and when you touched it, the cylinder opened, revealing a key as its contents.
«Oh Merlin's beard! How did you?» You were more confused than him, you hadn't done anything and yet, the object had magically opened just with your touch and the question quickly caught your interest.
«I-I really don't know...was that some kind of magic?»
«Traces of an ancient magic, to be precise. The magic that Miriam had always believed existed but could never—» You didn't understand what he was talking about, but it was clear he knew what it was and there, he looked at you with thoughtful eyes «And you, it seems, are the key to understand this mystery. Maybe even the reason why your powers have awakened only now.»
That story was absurd but the more you listened, the more you wanted answers. When the morning came, a grand, medieval castle approached and you realized it was Hogwarts.
«So, this is the school my mother grew up in...»
You knew of its existence, but you had never imagined that it could be so...beautiful. You looked away and just let Professor Fig walk you inside, pretending to show your disapproval.
«I need to do some research and contact the Minister of Magic. For the moment, I ask that you keep that's happened this evening between you and me.» Then, his eyes went to your battered as coat and there, Fig used his wand to change your attire to one for a student wizard.
«I'm no expert, but that seems more appropriate.»
Again, the magic surprised you by transforming what you were wearing into a school uniform, with a long black cloak and a pointed hood on your back. However, the professor noticed your displeased expression, everything was happening to you was without warning and throwing yourself into a new world wasn't easy for you to accept.
«Ready for the Sorting Ceremony? Don't fear anything and everything will be fine, Miss Burns.»
Your heart beat rapidly as the doors opened in front of you. You had never seen it before, but you knew what it was about and it made you even more nervous, when you saw all those students queuing up to be sorted into the four houses of the school.
Four houses. Four different curses.
You were last in line and as you positioned yourself there, the people sitting around you started to murmur, but you ignored them and when it was your turn, you headed towards a composed woman with red hair, smiling as she watched you walk up the stairs.
«You must be Y/n Burns. Please, have a seat here, we were waiting for you.» You faced the rest of that majestic place, where all the other students stared at you curiously; they wondered why you had signed up so late, but you made a confused face when a strange hat was placed on your head, which suddenly started talking to you.
«Ah, yes - a bit older than the others, aren't you?» A few laughs echoed through the room and you stiffened in your seat, you couldn't believe the famous Sorting Ceremony was conducted by a haunted hat «You come here with preferences and preconceptions - certain prejudices, there seems to be something bothering you...»
«My life has suddenly changed, without anyone asking me. I know my place is not here, among all these sorcerers.» Your first answer was stern, but clear, your intentions to stay there were practically low and the Sorting Hat sensed something nagging at your mind.
«Mmm...and you think that your discomfort can be cured only by retracing your steps? Surely I detect something more valiant in you, my dear.» The Hat continued to speak above your head and you clenched your sweaty fists on the knees «You've recently learned that you possess a rare ability, but you still persist in wanting to hide it...ambition and knowledge flows inside you and perhaps, I know what could help you master it.»
A silence fell over the room, before the Sorting Hat announced its final verdict, making your heart beat nervously. Everything would have been fine with you, except that House.
«Please don't say that name, please don't say that name...»
«...»
«SLYTHERIN!»
Cheers were coming from the right wing of the room, as others definitely noticed your lack of joy. A boy with brown hair stayed to observe your expression in particular, studying your movements even after you jumped up...you wanted to protest, declare it was a big mistake, but when the red-haired woman used her wand to change the colors of your uniform, your fate seemed now sealed.
You were a witch like your mother.
«It's curious to see you not making any sound, what's wrong with you all of a sudden?» Right there, a girl with a brown ponytail sitting next to him said jokingly, after noticing that he was stunned looking at the newcomer «I was sure you were going to cast a Confringo at those kids before, but now the cat got your tongue!»
«Stop that or he'll definitely cast something on you in no time, Imelda Reyes.» Another girl scolded her with a sigh, before returning to observe the end of the Sorting Ceremony with Professor Black's elimination of Quidditch for the entire year, causing discontent among the students «Is it just me, or you get the impression that girl isn't very happy being with us?»
«And not just that Violet, it seems to me she really hates being here. I've never seen this before.» Of course, the small group looked at you standing there, not reaching their table and because of that, some unpleasant murmurs spread across it.
«You're too quiet for my likings, tell me what's going on in your head.» Another boy with blond, slicked-back hair turned casually to his friend, his silence let him know that he was staring at the new student the whole time.
Of course, he didn't expect you to enter during their dinner and just took one another look at your silent figure, now in the company of Professor Weasley, you were quite interesting and your eyes hid a mystery that he longed to uncover...but he had to come up with an excuse to give to his best friend without arousing suspicion.
«Seems we met a tough one. You should see the flames in those eyes, Ominis...»
The other rolled his boredly, as if he expected such an answer from Sebastian and went back to focusing on the ceremony, ignoring what was actually hidden underneath in the mind of the young Slytherin boy. Though he couldn't see, he could clearly sense the change coming toward them like a hurricane.
