"๐ am so glad we invited the Chippewas to join us this holiday meal. Remember, these savages are our guests. We must not be surprised at any of their strange customs. After all, they have not had our advantages, such as fine schools, libraries full of books, shampoo." Amanda delivered her line with dramatic flair, eliciting a few chuckles from the audience. Her fellow campers, dressed in pilgrim costumes, sat around the table, portraying their roles with earnest enthusiasm.
Gary and Becky, nestled in their hidden spot in front of the stage, watched with pride, script books in hand. Their eyes gleamed with satisfaction as the performance unfolded.
Lilith exhaled deeply, nerves evident in her tense posture. Wednesday, sensing her discomfort, gripped her hand and kissed it lovingly, a silent gesture of support that brought a smile to her lips. Hesitantly, he let go of her hand as she stepped onto the stage, wearing her Native American costume dress, complete with a headpiece and leggings to hide her burnt scarsโa mandate from Becky.
Lilith walked with her fellow "Indians," a forced smile plastered on her face. She raised her hand in greeting and spoke, "How. I am Pocahontas, a Chippewa maiden." Her voice was steady despite the underlying frustration.
Amanda's parents, seated on the benches, muttered to each other, "An Indian." They exchanged skeptical looks, and the wife added, "Enough said." They both chuckled, unaware of the tension simmering beneath the surface. Joel, standing next to Lilith, spoke his line nervously, "And I am Running Bear, betrothed to Pocahontas. In the play." He glanced down, avoiding the intense glare that Wednesday sent his way. Lilith continued, addressing Amanda, "We have brought a special gift this holiday feast." With that, Pugsley waddled onto the stage in his enormous turkey outfit, eliciting laughter from the audience. "I am a turkey. Kill me." His deadpan delivery was met with more chuckles.
Amanda responded, her dramatics in full swing, "What a thoughtful gift!" She circled the table, stopping in front of Lilith but maintaining a careful distance. "Why, you are as civilized as we, except we wear shoes and have last names. Welcome to our table, our new primitive friends." The audience laughed again at the absurdity.
Lilith, her eyes flashing with annoyance, forced herself to deliver the next line, "Thank you, Sarah Miller. You're the most beautiful person I've ever seen. Your hair is the color of the sun. Your skin is like fresh milk, and everyone loves you." The words were laced with irony, reflecting her true feelings.
In Lilith's mind, it was Wednesday who was the most beautiful person she had ever seen. He may not be the sun, but he was indeed the moon: cold yet so beautiful, quiet yet so bright in the darkness. His skin was like snow, bringing comfort to her fire. His eyes held so much depth that Lilith could drown in them like an ocean. She glanced at Wednesday, love evident in her gaze, and he returned the look with equal affection. Feeling shy under his intense gaze, Lilith looked away, but she felt his eyes burning into her, a smirk playing at his lips. He restrained himself from rushing to her side and kissing her passionately, knowing the time and place were not right.
"Stop! Sit," Amanda commanded, gesturing for everyone to take their seats on the bench. As the group began to move forward, Wednesday halted them and spoke, "Wait."
Amanda looked at him, puzzled, "What?"
Lilith's fake smile transformed into her real one, a glint of mischief in her eyes. "We cannot break bread with you." Amanda glanced down at Becky and Gary, who were frantically flipping through their script books in confusion. "Huh? Becky, what's going on?" Becky whispered angrily, "Wednesday. Lilith." Ignoring Becky, Wednesday stepped forward to face the crowd. "You have taken the land which is rightfully ours. Years from now, my people will be forced to live in mobile homes on reservations."
Lilith joined him, grabbing his hand. "Your people will wear cardigans and drink highballs. We will sell our bracelets by the roadsides. You will play golf and enjoy hot hors d'oeuvres."
Wednesday squeezed Lilith's hand tighter and continued, "My people will have pain and degradation. Your people will have stick shifts. The gods of my tribe have spoken."
Turning to Lilith, Wednesday asked, "Pocahontas, will you take my hand in marriage and leave Running Bear?"
Lilith beamed, "I thought you'd never ask." She kissed his cheek.
Facing the audience, Wednesday declared, "They have said, 'Do not trust the pilgrims, especially Sarah Miller.'"
Amanda interjected, "Gary, they're changing the words!"
Lilith seized the moment, "And for all these reasons, I have decided to scalp you and burn your village to the ground."
With that, Joel and the others let out a battle cry and charged forward. Two campers dropped from zip lines in front of Amanda, grabbing her arms, making her scream. Other campers emerged from behind the buildings, carrying lit torches and setting the props on fire. Chaos erupted as the performance descended into an uproarious revolt, leaving the audience in stunned disbelief.
"Children, campers!" Becky shouted.
"Stop it! You're destroying my text!" Gary exclaimed angrily.ย
The two campers dragged Amanda to a wooden pole as chaos erupted on stage. Some campers shot flaming arrows onto the roofs of the tents, setting them ablaze. Joel's parents watched in horror. "He's not a team player," Joel's father commented.
"Well, he's a special child, but he needs friends," his mother replied.
Joel's father pointed at the stage. "He needs friends like this?"
Meanwhile, Joel snuck over to the benches and pulled a lever, causing the back row, where his parents sat, to collapse. Joel grinned victoriously and dashed away.
As the fire grew, Pugsley placed an apple in Amanda's mouth, muffling her screams, and tied her to the wooden pole with rope. Two kids aimed their flaming arrows at Gary and Becky, who ducked just in time as the arrows were fired. Joel pulled another lever, sending a pilgrim girl flying into the lake, smiling victoriously once more.
Campers placed logs at Amanda's feet and doused them with gasoline. "Uh, I beg your pardon?" Amanda's father spoke as he and his wife stood up to help her, only to be met with two pies launched at their faces.
Amanda continued screaming, her eyes widening in terror as Lilith turned towards her. Smiling, Lilith walked forward, reaching behind her head to pull out three matches. She struck one, its flame flickering ominously, making Amanda scream even louder. Lilith winked at Amanda, her smirk widening as she held the match aloft.
Moments later, the campers sat at the table surrounded by the burning set on the stage, watching with gleeful satisfaction. Becky and Gary, tied up with apples in their mouths, screamed muffled pleas as they were rotated over a fire like rotisserie chickens. The flames crackled and roared, casting eerie shadows over the chaotic scene. In the background, a serene contrast played out on the lake. Wednesday and Lilith were in a canoe, floating gently along the water. They held each other close, their embrace deep and tender. As the canoe glided away from the fiery chaos, they shared a passionate kiss, lost in their own world.
