chapter one

Winona Martin trudged through a bus station, keeping her head low. It had been a over year since the incident. A year since she killed someone. A year since Elaine was taken. Winona had been on the run ever since. She did her best to keep a low profile and had some help along the way.

She walked over to the ticket counter. "Where to?" The man behind the counter questioned in a bored tone. "I'm trying to get out of this city," Winona said. "Really? I never would've guessed. I mean, you are at a bus station after all," the man said.

Winona narrowed her eyes and glanced down at his name tag. "Look, Steve, I don't need your sarcasm," she retorted. "Where do you want to go?" He asked again. Winona sighed and shrugged. "I don't know. Where do you recommend?" She asked back. He sighed, "I don't know, lady."

"The attitude is definitely not needed, Steve," Winona said. "Look, just tell me where you want to go so that I can go on my lunch break, okay?" Steve said. Winona rolled her eyes and looked around. Her eyes landed on a brochure in front of her and she looked back up.

"Atlanta," she answered. "You sure?" He asked. Winona groaned, "Yes." Steve nodded his head and began typing on his computer. "All right, the next bus to Atlanta is a 4:35," Steve said and Winona nodded. "Okay, that'll be, $72.25," he said. Winona gaped at him in shock. "For a bus ticket?" She asked incredulously. "Well, yeah. We're in Virginia and you want to go to Georgia. It's gonna be expensive," he answered.

"That's a ripoff!" She exclaimed. "I don't make the prices, I just work here," he said. "Fine," Winona muttered. She pulled out her wallet and handed him some money. A minute later, her handed her her change and her ticket. "Here you go," he said. She took the money and ticket from his hand.

She shoved the change back into her wallet and stepped away from the ticket booth. "Hey!" Steve called. Winona turned back to him with raised eyebrows. "Do you have a boyfriend?" He asked. Winona narrowed her eyes before rolling them. "Yeah, I do. I'm actually going to Atlanta to meet him," she answered. She began walking away from the booth.

"But you didn't even know where you wanted to go before," he pointed out. "Have a nice day!" She said back. "Damn, that ass though." She scrunched up her face in disgust as she made her way through the bus station. She glanced down at her ticket and began looking around to find where her bus would come through. She found the area and took a seat on a bench.

She looked down at her watch. "Great, I have to wait for two hours," she muttered. It was going to be a long day.

····

Winona's head was leaned against the bus window. She had been on the bus for hours and after a few uncomfortable naps, she was wide awake. She watched the trees whiz by and sighed in boredom.

"Attention passengers, we will reach Atlanta, Georgia in ten minutes. Please remain in your seats. Thank you." Winona smiled in gratitude.

Ten minutes later, she was practically running off of the bus. She made her way through the Atlanta bus station and searched for an exit. Once she found one, she exited the building and began trying to hail a cab. When she got one, she entered the vehicle. "Can you take me to a restaurant? I'm starving," Winona asked the cab driver as she put on her seatbelt.

"Of course. Any restaurant in mind?" He questioned. "I don't really know any of the restaurants here," she replied. "All right, I'll just take you to the nearest one. I'm sure you'll find something that you'll like there," he said. "Thank you," she said. The man nodded and began driving the vehicle.

After a short drive, the cab pulled into the restaurant's parking lot. Winona paid the cab driver and stepped out of the vehicle. She slowly made way into the building. Once she was seated, she began looking through the menu. Everything looked good to her. "Man, it has to be her. It looks just like her." Winona closed her eyes and released a breath. She hated when this happened. There were occasions where she'd read a mind without meaning to. For example, back at the bus station and again right now.

She opened her eyes and looked at the table next to her own. Two girls, one a brunette and the other a redhead, were sitting together, their eyes trained on Winona. She squinted at them and they looked away. "Hello, I'm Richard and I'm gonna be your server for today. Can I start you off with something to drink?" A voice in front of her said.

Winona looked up at him and he smiled. "Uh, just water," she said. "One water, coming up," Richard said.  He walked away from her table and Winona looked down at her hands. "Hey, excuse me?" A female voice said. Winona looked up to see the girls from the table next to hers. "Yeah?" She asked slowly. "Aren't you that girl?" The redhead asked.

Winona smiled falsely, "Um, what girl?" The brunette spoke next. "The one from the video?" She said. Winona grew fearful but masked it with confusion. "The girl from that video with Drake. His new girlfriend or something," the brunette elaborated. Winona laughed and shook her head.

"No, I wish, but no. That's not me," Winona answered. "I told you," the brunette said. "But she looks just like her," the redhead said. "Not really," the brunette retorted. Winona turned her attention away from the two and let out a relieved breath. Her waiter came back with her water and placed it on the table before pulling out his notepad.

"What can I get you to eat?" He asked. Winona looked down at the menu on the table and then back at him. "The chicken alfredo," she said. "Nice choice. Will that be all?" He said. Winona nodded and Richard took her menu. When he walked away, she pulled out her burner phone.

She sent a quick text to Renee before slipping the phone back into her backpack. She tapped her fingers against the table as she waited. She glanced around the restaurant before looking back at her table. Around ten minutes later, Richard came back with her food. She thanked him and began eating.

After eating for a little while, she began feeling as though she was being watched. She continued to eat her food while scanning the restaurant with her eyes. She saw that one of the waitresses was watching her intensely. The waitress whispered to another and that waitress turned to look at Winona.

"Great," Winona muttered. Richard came back then, a smile still on his face. "Is everything all right over here? Can I get you anything else?" He asked her. "Actually, can you get me the check please? I'm done eating," Winona answered quickly, her eyes moving to the waitresses again.

"Sure," he answered, picking up her plate, and walking back in the direction he had come from. Winona began pulling money out of her wallet. She tapped her fingers impatiently on the table and looked for Richard. "Come on. Come on," she mumbled. The original waitress was now stood beside what a professional looking man who was talking on the phone.

Winona's heart jumped in her chest. "Dammit Richard. Hurry up," she whispered. She looked around the restaurant again for her waiter and spotted him, now talking to the manager looking person. His eyes met hers and he nodded at whatever the manager was saying to him. "Shit!"

Winona threw some bills onto the table and grabbed her backpack before running toward the restaurant's exit. "Hey! Stop!" A voice called, but she didn't stop. She ran out of the door and outside. She frantically ran down the sidewalk, weaving around people as she did so.

She made the mistake of turning around and saw that she was being chased by who she thought was the manager. Why is he chasing me? She continued to run, accidentally bumping into people along the way. She had no idea where she was going but she knew that she couldn't stop moving.

The distant sound of police sirens made the girl run faster. She received strange looks from people as she ran by them but she paid them no attention. She turned to her right and continued down the sidewalk. She eventually found herself at a dead end in an alley. "This is not happening," she gasped.

She turned around and began making her way out of the alley. The police sirens were even louder now. This was because they were right in front of her. "Shit shit shit shit shit," she cursed. The officers piled out of their vehicles, pulling out their guns and pointing them at her. "Freeze!" One yelled.

Winona closed her eyes and concentrated. When she opened them again, they were glowing a brilliant silver. She watched as the police officers looked around in confusion as she seemingly disappeared before their eyes. "Where the hell did she go?" One of them shouted. She kept her mind focused on the illusion as best as she could as she quickly searched for a way out of the alley.

She settled on carefully making her way around the police officers who were slowly walking toward where she originally stood. They kept their guns raised and she slowly walked around them and toward the entrance of the alley. Once she reached it, she immediately took off running again.

····

Sunglasses adorned Winona's face as she quickly walked down the street. She had changed her clothes and was trying to find a place to lay low. The sun was beginning to set and if she didn't find somewhere to hide, people would get suspicious as to why someone was wearing sunglasses at night.

She made her way into another alley and looked around. On one of the brick walls, was a door. She ran over to it and began pulling on the handle. The door didn't budge. "Dammit!" She exclaimed before examining the door for a bit. She noticed the lock that was keeping the door closed.

Winona looked around the alley for something she could use to break the lock. She saw nothing and sighed in frustration. She then spotted a dumpster and scrunched up her nose. She took a deep breath before walking over to it. She peered inside, standing on her tiptoes in order to see inside. In this moment, she hated being 5' 5".

She placed one hand on the edge of the dumpster and used the other one to reach into the dumpster. She quickly retracted her hand when she felt something gooey on her hand. She gagged a few times and shook out her hand. She thought about trying to find another place to hide. But it was dark now and she was scared to go back out in the open.

Winona slid her backpack off of her back and unzipped one of the zippers on the front. She pulled out her small flashlight and shined it inside the dumpster. She moved the light around the dumpster and stopped it on a discarded red high heel. She jumped a little until her stomach rested on the edge of the dumpster.

She used one hand to grip the edge and steady herself while her other hand reached forward. After almost falling in, she grabbed the shoe and slid down the dumpster, turning off the flashlight and shaking her body in disgust. Winona placed one strap of her backpack onto her shoulder and walked back over to the door. She used the heel to try and break the lock.

As soon as the shoe came in contact with the lock, the heel broke off. Winona looked at the shoe and back at the lock in shock. "I should've expected this," she muttered to herself. She then attempted to use the shoe to break the lock. It wasn't a strong shoe but after hitting the lock multiple times, it finally broke.

Winona sighed in relief and pulled the lock off the door. She gripped the handle and pulled on the door. It still wouldn't budge. She yanked on the door harder until it finally creaked open. Winona grunted as she pulled the heavy door open further. She glanced around the alleyway one last time before slipping through the door.
