chapter four

Clarice and Winona entered the room. "You can take that bed," Winona said pointing to it. Clarice nodded and walked over to the bed. She sat down and began looking around the room. "So you're new here too?" Clarice asked after a moment of silence.

"Yup. I got here last night. Two new mutants wanted by Sentinel Services in less than two days. Must be a new record for this place," Winona answered. The two became silent again. "So, are you from here?" Clarice asked. "Where, Georgia?" Winona asked. Clarice nodded. "Not originally, no. I only came to Atlanta because I didn't know where else to go. A big mistake if you ask me," she said.

"So what, you've been travelling the country?" Clarice asked. "More like running from the government," Winona answered. This peaked Clarice's interest. Her eyebrows raised and Winona sighed. "My sister Elaine and I had been on the run for years after she discovered that she was a mutant. The way she found out got somebody hurt. My adoptive parents didn't want anything to do with her or me, so I didn't want anything to do with them. And I left with her," Winona said.

"What does she do?" Clarice asked. "Manipulate and control electricity. It's really cool," Winona answered, her tone somewhat nostalgic. "Yeah I bet. Where is she now?" Clarice said. Winona sighed, "I don't know." Clarice gave her a look of confusion and Winona decided to explain.

"A little over a year ago, I discovered that I was a mutant. The way that I did was bad. Worse than when she did. And where I found out was even worse. Long story short I killed someone. And the police and Sentinel Services found us that same day. I got away, she didn't," she said. "Man, that must've been rough," Clarice muttered. "You could say that again," Winona replied.

"So, what exactly can you do?" Clarice questioned. "I'm a telepath," Winona answered simply. "So you can read minds or something?" The green eyed girl asked. "It can get a lot more complex than just reading minds but yeah, I can do that too," Winona answered. "I don't get it. How did you kill someone?" Clarice said. Winona hesitated. "You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to," Clarice said. "No, it's fine," Winona replied. She took a deep breath and released it before explaining.

"We were at a grocery store, my sister and I. I started hearing voices in my head. I was unknowingly reading people's minds. A lot of people. At one point it got to be too much. It started to hurt. Their voices got louder. I started screaming, not that I wanted to. I couldn't control it and once I started, I couldn't stop. It was the kind of scream that could break glass. It was a loud, ear piercing scream, according to Elaine. This man got too close I guess and I don't really know what I did. He died. I killed him," she said.

"So, let me get this straight. You're a telepath and a siren?" Clarice said, unsure of herself. Winona scoffed a brief laugh at the question. "A friend of mine called it acoustikinesis or sound manipulation. She's very knowledgeable on mutant abilities. But you know in a way, I guess you could say that I was a siren. I got the killing thing down," Winona said. It became silent again.

"You read minds. So what am I thinking?" Clarice asked, breaking the silence. Winona looked at her. Her eyes began glowing a bright silver as she focused on Clarice's mind. "I could really go for a donut right now." Winona laughed, her eyes returning to their normal brown. "You want a donut," she said.

"Your eyes changed color when you did that. They were--" Winona cut her off. "Silver, I know," she said. "Do they always do that?" The green eyed girl asked. "For the most part. Sometimes I can still read minds without meaning to. They don't change color then," she said.

"How can you tell?" Clarice asked next. Winona laughed again, "You ask a lot of questions." Clarice shrugged, "I guess you can say I'm a curious person." Winona smiled, "Well my vision changes a little whenever I use my telepathic ability. At first my eyes used to burn and I'd see this sort of silverish color. Luckily they don't burn anymore."

"Cool," Clarice said. "Do all telepaths eyes change color like that?" She asked next. "No. I guess I'm a special one," the brown eyed girl replied. It grew quiet again.

"What about you?" Winona asked. "What about me?" Clarice asked back. "Do you have family?" Winona elaborated. "It's complicated," Clarice mumbled. "Aw, come on. I told you all about me. I wanna know about you," Winona said. "I didn't ask you to tell me all that. You didn't have to answer my questions," Clarice said.

"Well I did and now it's your turn," Winona said. Clarice hesitated. "If we're gonna be roommates, we might as well get to know each other. Even if our living situation is temporary," Winona said. After another brief, moment Clarice nodded. "I lived in a foster home. One for mutants who couldn't pass as human. The people that ran the home were nice. They kept us safe. But I couldn't stay cooped up in that house for the rest of my life so, I left," Clarice said. Winona nodded.

"What can you do?" Winona asked. "I uh, can make portals," she answered. "So you can go anywhere that you want?" Winona asked. Clarice shook her head, "Only places that I've seen before. Places that I've been." Winona nodded her head. "Well, now that we know more about each other, I think it's safe to say that you and I will be great friends," Winona noted.

Clarice smiled the tiniest of smiles.

The next day, Winona was sat on the floor in the room with the TV. She had a bowl of cereal in one hand and ate it as she watched the news. They seemed to be talking about the same things.

Winona being spotted, Clarice breaking out of a mutant detention center, and more recently, the two kids who destroyed a high school. "Anything new?" John's voice was heard. The girl jumped and turned to face him, a glare on her face.

"You people really need to stop sneaking up on me," she grumbled. "My bad. What're you doing in here anyway?" He said. "Watching the news," she responded, turning back to face the screen. "Why?" He asked. "It's not like there's anything better to do," she replied.

"You could always help out. Distribute blankets, hand out food. You know, that sort of thing," John said, sitting on the floor next to her. "I'm sure the people here would much rather I stay as far away from them as possible," she muttered. "The more you alienate yourself, the harder time you'll have here," he said.

"I don't know if you've realized, but everyone here treats me as though I'm some sort of monster. They all look at me differently for what I did. None of them wanna hear my side of the story. And you know what, that's fine," Winona said.

"Look, I'm sorry about all of this. I really am. But at the end of the day, we're all the same here. Maybe you should try to get everyone to realize that," John replied. "What's the point?" She muttered. John gazed at her for a moment before looking at the TV. "You're not a monster, Winona. I need you to see that before they can," John said.

He stood up from the ground and walked to the door. "Winnie," she said. He stopped in his tracks and looked back at her. "What?" He asked. She turned around to face him. "My friends call me Winnie," she replied.

John nodded, a small smile making it's way onto his face. Winona turned back around and faced the TV again. John gave her one last glance before leaving the room.

Clarice frantically searched the bank for Winona. She finally found the girl talking to Sage, who was instructing her on some of the things that she could do to help out. She quickly made her way over to Winona and grabbed her arm, pulling on it in order to get the girl to face her. "We gotta go," Clarice said before turning to Sage. "Excuse us." She pulled Winona after her.

"Go? Go where?" Winona questioned. She yanked her arm backwards, pulling Clarice to a stop. "Where are we going?" Winona asked again. "To find Marcos," Clarice replied. "What do you mean find him? What's going on?" Winona asked. "Look, we don't have time for questions. We gotta go," she said.

Winona followed after the woman who led her to John. "Can somebody tell me what's going on?" Winona asked. "What are you doing here? You're not going," John objected. "Yes, she is. Now let's go," Clarice said. "No way. It's bad enough that you're going and now I gotta look out for her too? It's not happening," John said. "Hey, you told me to come, remember?" Clarice pointed out.

"I don't need anyone to look out for me. I can take care of myself. And if Marcos is in trouble then I'm gonna help find him," Winona said. "You don't even know him," John replied. "He didn't know me and he still risked his life for me. I'm gonna do the same for him," Winona snapped. "You could get hurt," he protested, his voice slightly softening. "So could you and Clarice. Now stop making excuses and let's go," Winona replied.

He rolled his eyes and began leading the way. Clarice began filling Winona in on what was happening. They walked out of the bank and John began tracking Marcos. Clarice and Winona followed behind him. They got to a car and all got inside.

Not too long after, the three found themselves in some sort of abandoned factory. "Marcos is here?" Winona whispered to John. "He should be," John replied. The sound of sirens caused the three to freeze. John began listening and Winona grew anxious. "Come on," he said before he began running.

The two girls looked at one another briefly before chasing after him. John reached a door and began trying to open it. When it wouldn't budge, he began slamming his body against it. Winona's eyes widened. After slamming against the doors a few more times, it finally opened.

Winona saw Marcos and behind him were two kids, a girl and a boy, and whom Winona assumed were their parents. "Come on!" John yelled. "Go! Go now!" Marcos urged. The group began running through the doors. John grabbed Winona's arm and pushed her forward, urging her to run.

She did and looked back to make sure that everyone else was following. John lead the way for a while before coming to an abrupt stop. Everyone else ran around him, Winona turning and wondering what the hell he was doing. "They're coming!" John shouted. "That way! Go! To the hallway!" He commanded.

Winona began running in the direction that he pointed to and so did the rest of the group. She could hear an electronic skittering, like metal hitting the ground, behind them and quickened her pace. She turned around to and saw John and Marcos running to catch up with the group.

Winona began growing tired as they all continued to run. Clarice was now in the lead. Winona could still hear the chittering noise and grew terrified, not knowing what it was. They all came to a stop as they saw a metallic thing that looked like a giant spider, crawling down the ceiling. I guess that's the chittering noise.

The unidentified blonde girl shrieked and Winona took a step back. "Go. Go! Go!" The unidentified man yelled. They all turned in the opposite direction and began running again. They came to a door and John began punching it. Winona turned to see the metallic spider coming towards them. Marcos used his power to knock it backward.

The thing then began making a very loud and strange noise. It would lead Sentinel Services right to them. "They're on the other side," John said loud enough for everyone to hear. "Here they come!" Marcos exclaimed. He was still trying to hold the machines back.

The blonde girl then stepped forward and held up an arm, making some sort of shield to keep the electronic spiders back. She looked as though she were struggling to hold it up. "Clarice, you gotta get us out of here," John said. "What do you mean?" She asked. "You got yourself out of the prison, you can get us out of here," he said. "No, it's different. I can't see where I'm going. It's too dangerous," Clarice protested.

"Yeah well we will die if we stay here, so can you please just do it?" Marcos said. The blonde girl with the force field grunted. "They're getting through," she said, grunting again. Winona turned to Clarice in time to see the girl attempting to open a portal.

She was struggling to do it. "I can't do it!" She exclaimed. "Yes, you can!" John replied. "I can't!" She responded. Winona moved over to the girl. "Clarice, look at me! You can do this. You're stronger than you think you are. You can do it. Just try," she said, hoping her words would encourage the girl. Clarice nodded and strained to pull the portal open wider.

"Go! Hurry!" Clarice exclaimed once the portal was completely open. John jumped through the portal first. "Come on! It's safe!" He called to the others. "Go!" Winona urged. The man grabbed the blonde girl by her shoulders and threw her into the portal. The blonde woman was next followed by Marcos.

"Hey kid! Let's go!" Winona called to the boy who was hesitating by the portal. "Winnie, come on!" John yelled. The girl looked back at the two behind her before jumping into the portal. She rolled once and hastily sat up. She watched as the man threw the boy into the portal and attempted to follow. Before he could get through, he was shot. "No!" A voice shrieked.

Memories of the moment Elaine was shot before Winona drove off flashed in her brain. The man fell backward and away from the portal. Clarice grunted as her portal started closing. "I can't hold it!" She said. Winona stood from the ground and the man's family urged him to come.

She quickly moved to Clarice just as the portal closed and the girl fell. Winona barely caught the girl before she hit the ground. She then fell into Marcos who caught her and all three of them tumbled to the ground.
