¹³ SUMMER MATCHMAKER
━
SOON ENOUGH THE WEEKS TURNED INTO MONTHS, and of course, miles and audrey had gotten closer and closer.
not to mention that their friendship had grown due to audrey's friends moving.
it wasn't like she would forget about them, she still talked to them over the phone.
but miles couldn't help but feel happy that he'd finally gotten her all to himself.
the air was fresh, and you could feel the wind burst into the theater as soon as the doors to the entrance would be opened.
today was the interview she'd been talking to miles about for months during the school year.
she was going to get her first job.
as audrey walked out of the small
audrey walked into the bathroom of the movie theater, dialing the number she'd called most in the past few weeks.
she waited, her fingers trembling against the phone in excitement, "hello?"
"i didn't get it.." she whispered, a smile on her face, "what?" miles asked over the phone, "i'm so sorry, dree." he mumbled.
"just kidding you idiot, i landed it!" she laughed as she heard a girl's giggle in the back, "so did miles!" the girl cackled as miles' gasp could be heard over the phone.
"flora i told you to stay quiet!" he argued with the younger girl, audrey's jaw dropped on the other end, "you applied for the job?!" she exclaimed as he let out a breathy chuckle, "i don't know if i got it yet."
"miles," she repeated, scoffing into a laugh, "i'm not kidding!" he testified, "anyway, you should come over tomorrow before sunset, we can have a picnic on the balcony with flora upstairs."
"sounds good, i'll be there." audrey smiled, spinning around to face the mirror of the public bathroom, "alright, bye."
"byee," she smiled as he hung the phone up. she stared at her reflection before covering her hand with her mouth.
"the job and the picnic?" she mumbled to herself, jackpot.

as miles and audrey tossed popcorn into each other's mouths, they waited for more customers.
it was a thursday, the most boring day of the week.
"okay if you miss this one, you're in charge of the next customer." audrey said, as miles opened his mouth, tilting his head up.
audrey pursed her lips, tossing the piece of popcorn two feet away from her as miles moved his head around in effort to catch it.
it his his cheek before falling onto the dark carpeted flooring. "here comes your paycheck," audrey smiled as a family walked up to the counter.
miles propped himself off the seat as audrey turned and walked into a small closet filled with extra uniforms, brooms and vacuums.
"four tickets for inside out two, please." the man requested, as his two little daughters laughed and talked quietly behind him.
"and where would your seats be?" miles asked, spinning the small ipad around to face them, "we already paid for the seats," the man said, holding up the tickets confused.
he reached forward, pointing to four seats in a row that were all together.
"sir, those four are taken." miles spoke, slightly annoyed. "well i paid for them." the man repeated as he crossed his arms.
"too bad, i can't let you in if you don't have seats." miles shrugged, "i do have seats, i paid for them."
"well you can pay for a new set of seats if you'd like." miles sighed as the man shook his head impatiently, "look the movie starts in three minutes. the doors are gonna close if you don't head inside."
"so choose your seats, please." miles said, giving the man an arrogant smile as audrey walked out of the closet, watching the scene unfold.
there were now two other groups behind the guy.
"miles," audrey whispered, walking closer to the boy who was angrily gripping the counter.
"is there anything i can help with?" audrey sighed with a smile, the man walked closer. "i've paid for some tickets, but the seats i paid for are showing taken already."
"i'm so sorry, it must've been some sort of malfunction on the site." audrey nodded, as she held her hand out, "can i see the tickets?"
"yeah," the man said, handing her the four tickets, "i don't think he paid for the tickets, odds."
"so it shows that the seats are taken," audrey said to the man, ignoring miles' eye roll, "you have paid, and there are a few seats near those, which you can have since nobody's taken them."
"is there a refund for my seats being taken?" the man asked as audrey tilted her head, her lips pursing. "no, i'm afraid not, that's as much as i can do."
the man sighed, nodding before smiling. "thank you." he spoke, ignoring miles as he walked past the counter.
"fucking hell." miles murmured as the next group of people walked up to audrey's line. "i hate it here." miles spoke, as the second group walked up to his line.
"well it's just this and then school in three weeks," she spoke, as she scanned the tickets for the next three people.
"we have to do this for a month." miles groaned as he scanned the couple's tickets, "and then hell begins once again."
"c'mon, this isn't that bad. you just get really impatient is all." audrey said, turning to him as she tucked some hair behind her ear. "it's really not that bad, mi." she smiled as he shook his head.
"i don't like it." he huffed, sitting down on his stool again. "well at least we get free popcorn and drinks." she chuckled as she sipped a slurpee in her hand.
"you do. mark won't let me get soda." he whispered, "have some of mine." she said, handing him her cup. "i'm kind of sick of it anyway."
"what flavor?" he asked as she smiled at him, opening the small door to walk to the front of the desk, "that's for you to find out."

as the weeks passed on, miles and audrey were growing tired of going to work.
it really was audrey's idea, but it hadn't turned out at all the way she'd thought it would go.
"i'm so glad today's our last day," miles sighed, shrugging into the limo as audrey followed, "well now flora won't get so ticked off at us being gone all day."
"she's at least lucky that i don't go to private school," miles scoffed as audrey smacked his shoulder, "it's true!"
"when i was at private school it was a call almost every day." he sighed, smiling nonetheless. "she's always waiting for someone to keep her company."
"well i'm at least glad she likes company," audrey said, tilting her head, "most kids her age are probably guzzling soda and crunching popcorn like canines."
"like us?" miles laughed as audrey paused for a moment, "and holding an ipad they'd give their life for instead of going outside and touching grass."
"yeah okay, hypocrite." miles chuckled, "you're the one who was pouting over no soda privileges." the tall girl sighed, as she rested her head on his shoulder.
before they knew it, the limo had pulled into the rocky gravel driveway, and they were side-by-side with the manor's front door.
the two got out of the vehicle, one slamming the door shut as the other began to walk up to the door.
"where have you guys been?!" flora asked as she swung the door open, "okay mom," audrey scoffed with a smile, as she walked into the house, hugging the girl as she set down her bag.
"she's been waiting since miles left," kate sighed, walking past them with a plate in hand, "i swear she was just about to call."
"did you miss us?" miles asked, as he closed the door behind him, flora running up to her brother as he held his arms open for a hug.
against his better judgment, the girl smacked his arm away before staring up at him with a serious look.
"ow!" miles winced as flora crossed her arms, "did you make a move?" she said, leaning on one leg. "wha–flora."
"guys! i'm gonna use the bathroom, i'll be back in a sec." audrey called from the kitchen as kate and her spoke, "okay, we'll be waiting!" flora yelled back.
"what do you mean make a move?" miles asked, rubbing his elbow as she grabbed his hand, dragging him into the living room.
"well when you write about her all the time, you'd think you would put your words to use." flora said, as she pranced around the couch, "talk to her."
"did you go through my stuff?" miles asked, as she pursed her lips, twirling around.
"flora!" miles scoffed, "what?" she shrugged, "you talk about marrying her to me anyway, you just never say anything to her in real life." the young girl reasoned.
"that's cause it's not that simple." miles sighed, as audrey walked into the room, flora smiling at him before smiling to the other girl.
"can we play hide and seek?" she asked as audrey smiled, nodding yes. "sure, did you practice your nails?" she asked pointing out the colors on her small hands. as flora nodded she held out her hands so audrey could catch a better look.
"wow," she whispered, "you're getting good, little miss." audrey smiled as flora pushed hands onto her hips, "enough chitchat," the little girl said as audrey smiled over to miles, who shook his head quietly.
"c'mon you guys are so slow." flora complained as she pulled both of them into the hall, holding out a flashlight to miles. "nuh uh." he said, as flora then held it out to audrey, who shook her head.
"fine, i'll go get kate." flora groaned, before scurrying away. as the two watched the young girl run away, miles turned to look at audrey.
"wanna change?" he asked as she titled her head in confusion, "i'm gonna go change." he yawned before audrey piped up, "what would i change into?" she asked, knowing what he was suggesting.
"i have a feeling a girl as smart as you already knows." he whispered in her ear as he walked past her, patting her arm as he walked down the hall.
"miles wait," audrey finally said, jogging after him, "seriously what would i change into?"
"you tell me, doll." he smirked as he turned the corner, audrey's cheeks heating up. "w-would it be yours?" she asked, huffing into a grin, "maybe."
"hurry up, flora's gonna kill us." he chuckled as he walked into his room, leaving it open for her to follow. "this place looks like hell."
"i know, sorry i didn't get time to clean it, mom." he scoffed as she laughed following him until she sat down on his bed. "here."
he tossed a pair of sweats along with a t-shirt as she picked the two garments up. "right here, right now?" she asked, grinning as she saw the boy pause.
"you are so.." he sighed, picking out a sweater of his own to put on, "so what?" she asked, collapsing on his bed as she stared up at the ceiling; awaiting a response.
"c'mon pretty boy, i'm sure someone as smart as you has a word that comes to mind." she smiled, holding up the shirt as she let her arm fall back down beside her.
"you're more lewd than you let on," he sighed, pulling his uniform's shirt over his head before walking out of his closet. "wow miles, real smooth." she whispered, as he smiled.
"what?" he asked, as he pulled his phone out of his pocket, staring down at it, "really needed to come out here without a shirt on, huh? some charisma." she asked, as she turned fully to face him.
"well it's working, isn't it?" he asked, before pulling the sweater over his head, his curls bouncing as his head popped through the hole in his sweater.
"sure, sure." she muttered, turning back to his door, hearing a soft trail of footsteps.
"audrey? miles?" flora called as she ran into the room, she stared at the two before lingering back and forth of the doorframe. "what are you guys doing?" she asked as audrey spoke up, "changing our clothes."
"together?" the little girl asked, tilting her head as audrey let out a laugh, miles rolling his eyes in response. "no flora, audrey here likes privacy, so why don't we give her some." he mumbled, tossing his phone on the small coffee table across from his bed.
audrey smiled as she saw him walk out of the room, sneering at her as he closed the door behind him.
"you really need to make a move." flora sighed as miles whipped his head down at his little sister, "flora!" he whisper-shouted, as the leaned against the wall, waiting for the older girl.
"what? its true. you've known her for almost a year now." the seven year old spoke as audrey walked through the door, "ready?" she asked as flora nodded. "kate thinks we're already hiding."
"well then she sucks at this game." miles deadpanned as audrey smacked him on the shoulder, "dude, we're literally in the hallway. it's not that hard to find us." he said to the girl, as his eyes wondered to the sweats and the t-shirt he'd lended her.
"what, you like it on me?" she crossed her arms as miles opened his mouth to speak, only to be interrupted by flora, "c'mon lovebirds, get to hiding!" she said, running the opposite direction of them.
"i know a place," miles smiled as he took her hand, guiding her through the halls.
curious to where he might've been going, audrey went along with it. she studied the paintings and the artifacts along the way, calculating how long the manor had probably been around.
"c'mon," he said, holding the door open to a small laundry room. "seriously?" she asked as she walked into the small space, looking around.
"this was the best place you could think of?" she asked, crossing her arms. "well yeah, it's small, she always looks in big rooms." he reasoned, closing the door behind him.
down the hall, flora smiled to herself, running over to the tiny door and picking up a small broom that was underneath a dresser across from the door.
she propped it against the doorknob, making sure the door wouldn't open from the inside. the girl gasped as the broom slipped slightly, clinking against the doorknob.
from inside, audrey paused, as miles looked over to the door, then back to her. he smiled, as he pulled her against the wall, "she's not gonna find us." he whispered as she looked up at him, "what if that's her?"
"what if it's not?" he mumbled, his voice just above a whisper as he leaned closer to the girl, his nose brushing against her ear, "we've got plenty of time." he mumbled, as audrey's breath hitched.
she swore she felt his lips against her skin.
and what a feeling that was.
"miles," she steadily breathed, as he chuckled softly. she closed her eyes as she felt his cool breath on her skin.
"calm down, i'm not gonna bite you." he smiled leaning in closer, as her hand trailed up his arm. "miles–"
just as miles leaned in closer a loud bang could be heard from the hall, "what the fuck.."
audrey pulled away, pushing the door open only for it to stay put. "miles what the hell is going on," she winced, pushing her body against the door.
"hold on, lemme try." he whispered, as he shook the knob of the door, slamming the side of his body against the door, "fuck."
"are we locked in here?" she asked, as he ignored the comment, "flora!" he called, pushing against the door harder.
"let it go, she'll find us eventually." audrey muttered, pulling him away by the arm as he let go of the door instantly.
"i guess we could stay busy in here," she whispered, looking around as he raised his eyebrows slightly, "oh really?"
"yeah, we can play tic tac toe against the dusty walls." she smiled as he paused, his jaw hun slightly ajar. "you're kidding."
"no seriously." she chuckled as he stood in place, watching the girl look up, "isn't there a light in this tiny ass room?" she groaned, looking up, "nope." he whispered, as he watched the girl hoist herself up on a small shelf.
"i really hope someone finds us, i'm really hungry mi." she mumbled, as she rubbed her hands up and down her arms.
"yeah, me too." he sighed, leaning against the shelf beside her.
the two hung out together before they heard a voice calling their names throughout the hall, "audrey? miles!" kate's voice echoed through the hall as the two teens exchanged a look, rushing to get up to the door.
"in here!" audrey called, as miles pounded his fist against the hardwood door. kate immediately heard the ruckus, making her way towards the door as pulled the broom off the door, and miles and audrey poured out of the small room.
"how were you breathing in there?" she asked, as the two kids panted, "flora locked us in, i think." miles whispered as audrey huffed a laugh, "shrewd kid."
"i already found her, she said you guys were doing something in miles' room," kate shrugged, as miles' cheeks tinged a bit of red.
"we weren't, flora locked us, i saw her shadow beneath the door," audrey laughed as miles swallowed nervously.
kate gave them a half smile before turning to walk down the hall, audrey close behind, "miles, c'mon." she spoke up as the boy caught up to her.
"so when does school start back up for you two?" kate asked as miles rolled his eyes, orange juice still in his mouth, "august eighth," audrey said, as she set her phone down, looking at kate.
"you two excited?" she asked, "sophomore year," kate smiled at audrey who shrugged, "my best friends from middle school moved, and it was just us." she said as kate tilted her head in confusion.
"there were seven of us, four of them moved." she carefully said, her eyes boring into the wooden table, "the three of us were still here; at the highschool, but marina and lilith moved too."
"ah, i see." kate nodded as she looked over to miles, who was trying his best not to look at audrey through the corner of his eye, "well you have miles now, he's gonna be here with you."
"yeah, that'll be fun," audrey laughed as she nudged miles, whose thoughts were interrupted by audrey's arm against his.
"yeah, sophomore year is gonna be the best," he chirped up, as audrey rolled her eyes with a smile, "dumbass, you weren't even paying attention."
"was too," he argued as audrey mocked him, throwing her hands up as she made an expression, "sure."
"it's getting pretty late, you should head home," miles said, getting up as audrey gasped dramatically, "wow, someone doesn't want me here anymore."
"do you not wanna come back?" he asked with a chuckle as she shook her head, getting up, "i know, miles." she smiled as he walked her to the front door.
"want me to go with you?" he asked, "is that even a question..?" audrey tilted her head, as she hooked her bag off the coat hanger, miles pushed himself off the wall he was leaning up against.
"miles?" flora asked as she stood in the hallway, the two teens turned back, "where are you guys going?" she asked as miles and audrey gave each other a look, "audrey's going home." he said as flora pursed her lips.
she wanted to do more than just stay in the house all day, see more than what was on the estate..
but she didn't want to die.
she clutched her dress' fabric as audrey paused, "you okay?" she asked, walking over to the girl, "i wish you didn't have to go." the young girl whispered, as audrey clicked her tongue, "it's okay, munchkin."
"i'll be back tomorrow, we don't have work anymore!" she said, as she bent down close to the girl, rubbing up and down her arm, "so we can have a picnic tomorrow, alright? my promise." she sweetly smiled, making the girl nodded quietly.
flora gave the girl a hug, "i hope you marry miles one day," she whispered, as audrey paused, her smile fading a bit, "that way you can stay here all the time, and we can hangout whenever we want."
flora rubbed her eye as she stared at audrey for a response, but the older girl was simply shocked at the young girl's words.
"i-i-.." audrey choked out, marry miles?
"i'll be back, okay flora?" she said, swallowing as she stood up, miles waited at the door. "okay," the girl said, before twirling away, her stuffed animal in clutch as she skipped to the kitchen.
"did she say something?" miles asked, as the limo pulled out of the driveway, leaving audrey speechless at the little girl's words.
"not much, she just said she wished i could stay over more often," audrey whispered, fighting a smile.
marry miles?
marry miles..
miles gave her a confused look, hoping flora didn't slip up on anything about his letters and the stuff he wrote about audrey.
"anything specific?" he asked, leaning closer as audrey smiled up at him, "she wants me to live with you," she laughed as miles' face fell slightly, "how c-crazy would that be..?" he asked, a small chuckle escaping his lips.
"not too crazy, fairchild." she said, resting her chin on his shoulder as he paused, "what–do you want to?" he asked, snapping back into his cocky facade.
"maybe," she closed her eyes with a small nod, "oh really? i'm sure you'd get bored after a few weeks."
"well i haven't been bored yet, and i've been coming here every day for almost two months and a half."
"that's cause you don't live here," miles argued as audrey shook her head, "say what you will, you still live in a castle compared to my house."
"thanks for having me over," audrey sighed, resting her head on the boys shoulder as he rested his head against hers, "again."
"you don't need to thank me everyday, dree." he laughed softly, as she propped her chin up on his shoulder, looking at him.
"yes i do," she mumbled against his full sleeves shirt, "well i don't think you need to." he argued back, making the girl frown slightly.
"well it makes me feel better about coming over," she closed her eyes, her nose brushing against his cheek as the limo moved over the uneven concrete.
"as long as you come over tomorrow," miles mumbled, as he turned his head to see her eyes closed, "i don't care what you say." he whispered, brushing hair out of her face as she smiled faintly.
he rested his forehead against hers, closing his eyes as well.
"you're the best," she smiled as she opened her eyes, looking at miles' closed ones.
"i have never been to someone's house every single day of my life for six weeks straight, ever."
he laughed at this, making her squeeze his bicep, "i'm serious!" she said as she tried to replay his laugh in her mind.
it sounded so surreal to her, it made her feel so calm.
"you're so cute, audrey." he smiled, as he leaned forward, pressing a kiss to her cheek.
the girl held her breath, holding onto his arm as he did so.
"you're not going to leave me, are you?" she asked, hoping he wouldn't cringe at her words.
but this wasn't the first time for her.
infact, she was sure it wouldn't even be her last.
"what?" he asked as she looked at him with a straightface. "no, no, why?" miles asked the girl, who shrugged, "i just–everyone always does."
"they move, or they stop talking to me, and then i'm just stuck with these memories." she sighed, "these useless memories."
"well," he started as he pushed her face back to face him, "i'm not going anywhere." miles whispered, staring into her bronze eyes.
"i'm not leaving you, so don't get so worried." he mumbled, "you shouldn't stress yourself out over something that won't even happened."
she nodded quietly, resting her head on his shoulder.
"thanks miles." she kissed his shoulder, placing her head back on it again.
as the ride home continued quietly, the two thought about nothing besides each other.
they had each other, and for the first time ever,
audrey thought that maybe if she did have a crush on miles, maybe if her friends had been right..
maybe this time around, she had a chance.

i am sooooo sorry, (i mean it) for re-doing this chapter,
now for the people who are reading this version the first time, something happened and i wrote it when i was pretty much drunk and forgot what i ACTUALLY wanted to happen this chapter.
and whatever happened in the original version of chapter 13 wasn't supposed to happen at all. (which i wrote 3 different versions, published the 2nd and then took it down at published a third version)
anyway, please forgive me, i have a lot of work lately and i rarely get around to writing anything, and when i do i'm seriously drained of creativity but i have the plot down so i know what i want to happen, just sometimes i forget how i want to go about it.
hope you enjoyed this little chapter, flora was the matchmaker if you read up until now and STILL didn't get it. ;)
now buckle up fam cause it may be cute and cuddly now
but here's some good luck 🎰 🍀✨
CAUSE U GON NEED IT
