KASSIAN ROSENBIRD IS KNOWN as the girl who killed her own brother to survive the 69th Hunger Games when she was fifteen years old, claimed as the victor of the 69th Hunger Games. People think she has no soul, not a love in her heart, a cold-blooded killer. Kassian is always haunted by the ghosts of the victims that died in her games, she may seem as cold-hearted as everyone says, but her heart is filled with guilt and shame that is constantly torturing her until she is nothing but a broken, lonely young woman. Winning the game gave her nothing, winning the game only took her brother away, the only family she had and was left with no one.

AKHILLES OBELLE WON THE 73rd Hunger Games when he was eighteen years old when he was the one of the last two boys standing and won in a combat, becoming the victor of the 73rd Hunger Games. Before that, he always knew that he'd be reaped and believed he'd never win the game. It brought to him to relief that he somehow survived, but winning the game does not mean a life-long peace. Something in the arena clung onto his back, he brought it with him, like an unseen entity that haunts him for the rest of his life.

SPARK IS IGNITED, Districts across Panem are beginning to rebel against the Capitol after the 74th Hunger Games when the two victors, for the first time, breaking the tradition, the pair from District 12 won the game instead of just one victor. This changed everything.

WITH THE 75TH HUNGER GAMES ANNOUNCED ─ the 3rd Quarter Quell where the male and female tributes will be reaped from the existing pool of victors. Kassian is once again reaped and is forced to participate the Hunger Games again. Akhilles, inspired by the girl on fire from District 12 who volunteered a year prior, he volunteers after his old mentor was reaped. The two tributes come to acknowledge that they won't make it out of the arena alive this time, they come to work together, form an unexpected bond that brings them close together.
