❝ YOU DON'T DESERVE HER. ❞
CONNOR WALKED ALONGSIDE his friends, which unfortunately included koosh, too. he was rambling on about how great his ( kayvon's ) party would be, and how it was nearing the quote on quote 'best event of their lives.'
just as the four of them were walking through a partially empty outside area at the side of the school, connor did a double take when he saw a familiar brown haired boy stood by one of the outside stairwells.
"is that dylan?" he voiced, making the others stop and see for themselves.
there he was, accompanied by another girl. benj nodded in surprise. "yeah, with danica jones."
the two seemed awfully close, and connor grew increasingly suspicious. he left his friends and walked behind one of the other outside staircases next to theirs, being able to hear their conversation without them noticing him.
"this isn't gonna end well," eddie sighed, the other two agreeing as they watched from a distance. "let's hope he doesn't draw attention to himself."
"the note in class was so sweet of you, dyl," danica smiled. "i love them."
"of course, gorgeous. i'm just appreciating good looks when i see it," he chuckled.
"awww, well aren't you a sweet talker." danica put a hand on his chest.
connor furrowed his brows, his jaw clenching. he couldn't believe what he was hearing. it seemed like reina wasn't the only girl he gives notes to. the audacity to be flirting with two girls at the same time made him feel disgusted, but more furious if anything, because this affected his best friend.
after hearing an excruciatingly painful exchange of compliments, connor couldn't take it anymore. who the fuck was this dick to go flirt with rei one second, then flirt with a different girl the next?
connor made the split quick decision to approach him, trying to hide just how pissed off he was. "hey dylan! who's this?" he forced a smile.
"what is he doing?" eddie's eyes widened.
"i think he's drawing attention to himself," benj sighed as koosh took his phone out to secretly record. the three all moved closer to hear and see better.
dylan stood up straight, his hands in his pockets. "what do you want, fetus?" he didn't even try to hide the annoyance in his tone.
connor really, really had to hold himself back from punching the guy square in the face. "oh nothing, i just thought rei would be here with you."
"well she's clearly not, are you blind?" he rolled his eyes.
"who's rei?" danica asked, looking between the two guys.
"just a classmate, no one important," dylan lied, giving her a fake reassuring smile.
"no one important?" connor scoffed, taking a step towards dylan. suddenly, he felt a pair of hands grab his arm. looking behind him, benj firmly shook his head.
connor pulled his arm away from benj's grip, feeling even more pissed off than before. he looked back at dylan with a glare. "really? so you wouldn't care if i told her you were here looking cozy with another girl?"
danica frowned. "dyl, what's he talking about?"
dylan scowled at him before turning to danica. "i don't know, dani, but let me take care of this. i'll meet you in class later," he spoke, gesturing for her to leave. she looked at him suspiciously, reluctantly doing so.
"what the actual fuck is your problem?" dylan said lowly once danica was out of earshot.
"because you're a lying piece of shit," connor sneered. "what would rei think if she knew your egg headed ass was flirting with some other girl?"
"i think she would be just fine if you kept your fucking mouth shut you fetus freak," dylan spat.
"or what? huh?"
"oh shit, rei's coming," eddie informed. they all turned to see reina making her way towards them.
"connor don't do anything stupid," benj whispered.
dylan huffed. "you're lucky she's here or else i would've beaten your ass."
"do it, i fucking dare you. maybe then she'll see how much of an asshole you really are. you don't deserve her."
"guys what's going on?" reina intervened, standing in front of the two boys who were looking daggers at each other.
dylan was the first to break eye contact. the way he was able to fake a smile so quickly when talking to reina was insane to connor. "oh, we were just talking about a school project, nothing really. right connor?"
"yeah whatever," connor replied through gritted teeth before walking away. he couldn't stand being around dylan anymore - around anyone, for that matter.
the three friends shared a look, and koosh stopped recording.
"what's up with con?" she asked them all, trying to figure out what happened before she came.
"well-"
"no idea, i mean, we were just talking and suddenly he got all mad and hotheaded," dylan interrupted eddie.
reina frowned, turning to eddie so he could finish what he was saying. "eddie what were you going to say?"
eddie looked at reina, about to tell the truth, but suddenly he saw dylan giving him a warning look from behind her. he gulped, not wanting to be pulverised.
"uh, yeah, what dylan said," he agreed.
reina furrowed her brows, looking at benj and koosh who avoided eye contact. well, benj was. koosh was busy on his phone.
she turned around to see dylan with a neutral expression, juxtaposing the harsh glare he gave eddie two seconds ago.
she slowly nodded. "right... well, he isn't usually like that unless he's provoked or something."
dylan shrugged. "i don't know what to tell you."
"i'm gonna go check up on him," reina said.
next thing she knew, dylan took a hold of her wrist, stopping her from leaving. he shook his head, "i don't think you should. let him cool down on his own."
eddie stepped forward. "hey, woah-"
"don't grab her wrist like that," benj berated.
"i'm going." reina yanked her wrist away, feeling progressively annoyed by the second. she had a gut feeling something was wrong, and who was he to stop her from checking up on her best friend?
AFTER FIVE MINUTES of checking multiple places, reina finally found connor sat down on an empty staircase. she stood in front of him and sighed, "there you are - are you okay?"
connor didn't even look at her. instead, his head was down. "yeah, i'm fine," he replied in monotone.
"liar."
"just leave me alone, rei. go back to your boyfriend."
reina crossed her arms. "what the hell is up with you? and he's not my boyfriend!"
"good!"
"what does that mean?!"
his leg was bouncing up and down as he sighed. "nothing, just forget it."
"no, what the fuck are you trying to say?" she pressed on.
"nothing!"
she rolled her eyes. "why are you so pissed off? seriously connor, what's going on?"
"i'm pissed because - because he's not as fucking high and mighty as you think he is!" he exclaimed, finally tilting his head up to look at her.
"and why's that?"
connor stayed silent. would she even believe him if he told her what happened? she was his best friend, and he would do absolutely anything for her. but she seemed so much happier with dylan recently - too bad he turned out to be a massive dickhead.
just as he decided to tell her, she spoke first. "exactly. you know, if i didn't know any better, i'd think you're jealous."
"jealous?" connor scoffed. "of dylan?"
"yep."
"of that piece of shit? nah," he laughed as if she just told the funniest joke in the world.
that only seemed to anger her even more. "for fucks sake - why is he such a piece of shit?! what happened?!"
"you wouldn't understand!"
"i completely don't understand! he's done nothing wrong!"
connor shook his head in disbelief. he got up to leave. "sure, whatever."
reina immediately blocked him from leaving. she looked at him dead in the eyes. "no! you've been so distant lately, and i'm just trying to see what's wrong-"
"oh and you haven't been?" he said bitterly. "just leave me alone, reina."
he almost never said her full name.
he walked past her, and she didn't even attempt to block him again. she stood there, shocked, confused, and upset at what just happened. a mixture of emotions hit her like a truck. she felt her breathing increase, and an ache in her chest.
this was their first ever argument in the history of being best friends - were they even still best friends?
connor walked down the empty hallway. he didn't know where he was going, but it was definitely not class. he couldn't be around anyone after what just happened. there was a pit of guilt in his stomach, and it grew with every step he took further away from her.
at one point, he stopped and turned around. reina was nowhere to be seen, but instead he caught something laying on the floor where she previously stood.
he walked back towards it. each step he took, the more he regretted the argument. he knew what it was. the echoes of his footsteps in the empty hallway only reminded him of how alone he truly was and felt.
the light blue string bracelet contrasted the grey floor incredibly, a place where it didn't belong. a symbol of their friendship, disregarded on the floor.
he carefully picked it up and stared at it, sadness overflowing within him.
