The voice of Leah Clearwater boomed through Lilith's phone as she whined out, "When am I going to see my niece?" Lilith chuckled as she lead her daughter into the Cullen home after she had woken up from a nap, "It's been so long she probably doesn't even remember me."
"Soon. Believe me, she's always wanting to see you." Lilith responded. There were so many times whenever she was around Diana that all she could hear was Leah's name since they had been apart for so long. It was strange since she believed that Diana was using her gift to communicate with Lilith, but, there were times where she truly thought she could still hear her thoughts but she would shrug it off and just think that her mind was just going in overdrive.
"And I bet Dakota is missing me also." Leah added and Lilith looked over to her pet to see the black cat sleeping by the window in a ball.
Lilith let out another snort, "Yeah, she's miserable without you also. Once Lorelei's boundary spell is down you'll be the first to know."
She heard Leah let out a growl, "I just can't believe you have to have another boundary spell around you guys—and because of your parents!" She snapped.
The moment everything had calmed down, Lilith had let Leah, Emily, Jake and Bella know what had happened and told them that they might have to isolate themselves because of another threat against them; naturally they were all enraged. Even more so once they found out why they had to seperate themselves—especially Leah considering Lilith couldn't seem to catch a break... ever.
"Me too." Lilith mumbled as she fiddled with the ends of her dress, "Hopefully it'll be over soon and then I can forget any of this happened."
"I would've loved to see you go off at them though..." Leah thought out loud and Lilith rolled her eyes at her friend, remembering how proud Leah was when Lilith told her how she had accidentally lost control and tried to attack her parents.
"Of course you would've." She responded as she got towards the front of the Cullen home, "Listen, I have to go, but, I'll see if I can convince Lorelei to lift the boundary to let you guys in. I miss you guys." Ever since the threat against Diana, Lorelei had been treating it very seriously as requested by her brother. She rarely lets anyone out or in, even if they were friends of the Cullens because she was worried that something would happen as result of it.
"Please do." Leah begged, "We all miss you more. And we want to meet this girl." Lilith always mentioned Lorelei and how cool and powerful she was which made the pack intrigued about her and they were also shocked to find out that she was the sister of the infamous high priest.
The two friends bid each other goodbye and Lilith helped Diana up the driveway and up the front steps towards the home before the two walked inside and towards their family who were seated in the family room.
As soon as Diana saw her father who was stood nearby the fireplace, she immediately let go of Lilith's hand and started to run towards Edward, pumping her little legs as hard as she could to get to him as quickly as possible. Edward beamed when he heard her coming towards him and squatted down to catch her and pick her up as soon as she was in reach before placing her on his hip.
Lilith smiled as she watched Edward and Diana interact, her husband using his gift to read her mind and responding to her verbally with a bright smile on his face. Her eyebrows furrowing as she thought she could hear snippets of their conversation but shaking it off thinking it's just her daughter's gift growing stronger.
She immediately walked over towards her little family and stood beside Edward who pressed a kiss to her head before continuing to give his daughter his full attention.
"Told you I was her favourite." Edward remarked with a smirk and the blonde newborn rolled her eyes at him before fixing Diana's jacket that had slipped off of her shoulder during her mini run.
"For the moment." She responded quietly.
Rosalie walked into the room, her and Emmett just having come back from hunting and smiled as she saw everyone in the room already. Diana beginning to fidget in Edward's arms as she tried to make her way to Rosalie, the vampire seeing it and coming over to grab her out of of Edward's grip and into her arms.
"I think Rose is her favourite actually." Jasper interjected amusedly once he looked up from his book and saw the disappointment on Lilith and Edward's faces while Lorelei snorted quietly in the corner.
It had become a running gag between the family as to who Diana's favourite was and they were sure that Diana was loving the attention as everyone was constantly spoiling her for the small moment of glory of being the favourite.
And despite being Lilith and Edward being her parents who loved her the most, Carlisle and Rosalie surprisingly put up a good fight against them in that regard. "For now." Both Lilith and Edward responded dryly and the family all chuckled.
Alice then soon followed after Rosalie by walking into the room while holding a vase of flowers with a large smile on her face as she was listening into her family's conversation knowing who was ultimately going to be Diana's favourite.
Everyone begged for her to tell them but she always refused as she thought it was ruining the friendly competition.
Soon enough, images of snow falling, many pairs of black coats trekking through the snow and eventually the picture of the Volturi and the entire guard standing in a large line in front of them flashed in front of her eyes causing her to gasp and drop the vase onto the floor, the glass smashing to pieces.
Lilith wrapped a hand around Edward's elbow and gripped onto the fabric of his clothing, a bad feeling settling in as she watched Jasper drop his book and appear next to his mate, "What is it, Alice?" He questioned, "What did you see?"
"The Volturi." Alice answered him, and Lilith felt faint as she started to see the image of the Volturi heading towards them, "They're coming for us. Aro, Caius, Marcus, the Guard..."
"And Irina." Lilith realised as the image showed Irina standing with the Volturi across from them. Diana immediately sensed her mother's fear and began to fidget in Rosalie's arms to try and go towards her, as if she knew that Diana being in Lilith's arms would've made her feel more secure.
"What did Irina see in the woods that day?" Edward asked his wife, assuming that Irina had gone to the Volturi and that's why they were coming after them.
"We were just walking." Lilith answered him as she picked up her daughter and began to bounce her on her hip lightly, letting Diana cuddle into her shoulder, "Diana was playing in the snow."
"Irina must've thought that Diana was an immortal child and went to the Volturi to report it." Lorelei assumed.
Lilith turned to look at her, "A what?" She questioned.
"Of course." Edward scoffed while Carlisle stood up and walked towards the bookshelf, grabbing an old and large book off of the shelf. He couldn't blame Irina, he would've thought the same thing if he had no idea about Lilith's pregnancy and saw a child that had supernatural abilities. He knew how it would've looked from the outside.
"An immortal child is a vampire that was turned at the age of a child. They're frowned upon and they're taken very seriously with the Volturi." Edward explained and Rosalie sensed to conversation getting intense and grabbed Diana from Lilith's arms and took her out of the room, knowing that Lilith wouldn't want her daughter around the conversation that they were about to have.
Carlisle opened the book to the page that had information about the immortal children and placed in onto one of the tables, the newborn moving to sit in front of it and frowned at the image plastered on one of the page.
"Those immortals—the ancient ones—I still have no idea what were they were thinking when they created them." Lorelei scoffed to herself, within the witch community, they also agreed that the creation of immortal children was a bad idea and that it should be considered illegal to do. "I can't even begin to understand. They created vampires out of humans who were barely more than infants..."
"The immortal children were very beautiful. So endearing, so enchanting, you can't imagine. You had but to be near them to love them; it was an automatic thing." Carlisle began to explain while Lilith flipped through the pages, "But, their development was frozen at the age they were turned. They couldn't be taught or restrained. A single tantrum could destroy an entire village."
"Imagine adorable two-year-olds with dimples and lisps that could destroy half a village in one of their tantrums." Lorelei added with a disgusted look on her face, "If they hungered, they fed, and no words of warning could restrain them..."
Lilith looked at the next image and her eyebrows furrowed as her sight zoned in on the description of the image; 'Sasha and Vasilii. Slovakia, 1340'. Her eyes moved down towards the image seeing a woman fighting against the Volturi, protecting what it seemed to be a little boy with red eyes behind her from them. Lilith felt ill as she pictured herself in Slovakia while the little Vasilii tore apart the village, and while Sasha tried to protect him against Jane who was planning on executing both him and her for his creation.
"In the end, the practice was completely eliminated by the Volturi once humans heard of the devastation and stories spread. They were forced to intervene since the children couldn't protect our secret, they had to be destroyed. The immortal children became unmentionable; a taboo." Carlisle finished explaining.
"The creators of immortal children always grew very attached—they were utterly devoted to the children—and opposed the Volturi at all costs to protect them, and were all destroyed in the process." Lorelei explained, having seen and witnessed the Volturi's punishments against the crimes of creating an immortal child, "Because of the devotion inspired by immortal children, the Volturi were forced to destroy full covens in order to destroy one immortal child. Long-established covens were torn apart and demolished, among with countless humans that were slaughtered." Lorelei continued explaining and Lilith gripped onto the table trying to hold back the overwhelming sensation building up, "Traditions, friends, even families were lost... it truly was a plague to the vampire world."
The thought of the Volturi coming for them over a misunderstanding, and it would technically be her fault. The thought of them trying to hurt Diana hurt her physically and she wasn't even sure how to react.
"I think that's enough." Edward told Lorelei as he placed a comforting hand on Lilith's shoulder to calm her down, seeing the discomfort on his wife's face growing deeper the more she spoke.
"So, the Denali's mother made an immortal child." Lilith mumbled, not being able to take her eyes off of the picture in the book, her mind pulling her in and out of the scene mentally between moments and seeing the Sasha and Vasilii being executed in front of Tanya, Kate and Irina by Jane and the Volturi.
"Yes." Carlisle confirmed, "And she paid the price." Lilith closed the book after that and her nose flared, her fear turning into anger.
"Diana is nothing like those children." She stated, "She was born, not bitten. She grows almost every single day." She wanted to explain to the Volturi that Diana was nothing like those children, but, they most likely had enough proof in Irina's thoughts—even if they were incorrect—and the next option was to fight, even if it would be hard against Jane and Alec's powerful offensive weapons, Lilith's drive to protect her daughter was stronger. Not to mention with the help of the wolves and Lorelei, they might actually have a chance.
"Lilith, we won't stand a chance." Edward said, making the world around Lilith crash as she was losing hope and wishing she still had her magic in order to hold off the Volturi, "We won't be able to fight them off."
"Maybe you'll just have to convince them." Lorelei suggested with a shrug, causing the Cullens to look at her strangely, "I mean, they probably won't listen to you specifically, but, maybe others can convince them if enough people knew the truth."
"She has a point." Edward agreed as he nervously played with his hands, "Carlisle, you have friends all around the world."
"I won't ask them to fight." Carlisle crossed his arms in refusal, not willing to risk his friends' lives for a fight they didn't have to participate in to begin with.
"Not fight. Witness." Lorelei corrected him, "With your small coven they'd crush you instantly before you even had a chance to talk, but, if you had enough witnesses they might be willing to listen."
If Lilith wasn't so stressed, she might've snorted at how similar Lorelei and Leah were in personality and bluntness; considering how similar they were, they probably would've liked each other.
Esme placed a hand on Carlisle's arm, "We can ask this of our friends." She said to him, hoping it'll convince him to agree. They would have to be willing to take the risk in order to save their family.
Carlisle sighed and nodded his head. Lilith continued to think for other ways to protect her daughter and for people that she would know to come and witness against the Volturi.
The packs would be a good start for sure; Leah, Seth and Jake wouldn't let anything happen to Diana on their watch, and she would possibly have to even try and get in contact with Sam to see if he would be willing to put the past behind them in order to protect her. With the thought of Leah, Lilith looked up to Lorelei, "I'm going to need you to take down the boundary spell." She told the witch, feeling the small possibility coming after her daughter very minuscule compared to the Volturi in that moment.
Diana wouldn't leave Lilith's sight and she would make Lorelei come with her everywhere while they gathered witnesses, so if someone actually tried to come after them, they wouldn't stand a chance anyway. It was better than being stuck waiting like sitting ducks.
And she had to warn Bella since the Volturi would've seen her in Irina's thoughts and they could come after her for knowing about the existence of vampires; even if she was the imprint of a shapeshifter.
"Done." Lorelei nodded, "Tomorrow we'll all leave to gather as many witnesses as possible and bring them back here. Try not to share too much information about Diana in case they refuse your request to join us." She advised before walking out of the room, Lilith's head following after her retreating form and not missing the shared look in between Jasper and Alice; feeling a sense of darkness coming from their direction that just didn't sit right with Lilith.
