Lilith thanked her dad as she exited the family car to the school parking lot. She was yet to get a car of her own since they had just moved and she had accidentally set it on fire while in a magic lesson, she would have to wait a few more weeks until they had completely settled into Forks before her parents would even think about coughing up the money to buy her another car—and one with insurance that covers arson. The small blonde girl hugged herself tightly, trying to ignore the uncomfortable stares she was receiving from the students as she walked towards the school building. It was like Forks had never seen a new student before and that she stood out like a sore thumb.
Maybe it was because she had moved to the school in March and it was in the middle of the semester. Her parents couldn't have chosen a worse time to pack up and leave, completely disregarding the fact that their daughter would have a harder time trying to fit in with friendship groups that have already been established for months—probably even years. As she walked up the stairs, a girl with purple glasses walked up along with her with a bright and kind smile. "Hey, you're the new girl, right?" She asked Lilith.
Lilith nervously nodded, "Um, yeah, I guess you could call me that." She responded. She wasn't sure what would be the correct way to respond to a question such as that one that wasn't too rude or too forward.
The girl held out her hand, "Well, I'm Angela." She introduced herself kindly, shrugging off the awkward start to the conversation, "And if it makes you feel any better, you're not the only person who is starting here today."
It did make her feel better that someone else would have to deal with the awkward first day nerves, she hoped that maybe they could stick together at least for the day before they inevitably found actual friends. "Oh, that's good." The blonde bit her lip. Her eyes then widened realising she hadn't told Angela her name, "I'm Lilith, by the way."
"Lilith, huh?" Angela raised an eyebrow, it was an interesting name to her as she hadn't heard anyone be called that. At least not in Forks.
"Yeah, it was like my parents predicted me to be some sort of monster." Lilith joked, "I think I've been okay so far, but, they might say something else." Her mind drifted to the image of her car being lit up in flames and her parents scrambling to get it put out before it drew attention to their home.
Angela laughed, "You're funny." She said, "Do you need help finding the office?" Lilith nodded and Angela began to show her the way to the office before she had to leave and go to her first class early to speak to her teacher about an extra credit project as she was falling a bit behind.
Lilith looked up and saw a brunette girl also at the office desk, asking for her schedule and all the other information that she would need for the school day. She assumed it was the other new student—at least it was a girl, it would be easier for her to somewhat befriend. The office lady looked up, her eyes lighting up when she noticed Lilith standing behind the new girl, "Ah, and here she is." She said, grabbing the other girl's attention, "You must be Lilith Bailey." She says, sorting out Lilith's paperwork from behind the desk.
"That's me." Lilith pursed her lips and rocking on her feet awkwardly again.
"Lilith, this is Isabella Swan, she's also new today." She said and Isabella waved awkwardly at her. At least she was also just as awkward as her.
"Just Bella." Bella said to Lilith and the blonde girl nodded.
The office lady clapped lightly, "Oh, I think it would be just lovely if you too stuck together today." She said finally handing Lilith her schedule, school map and locker combination. Lilith tried to ignore how strange the interaction was becoming and nodded and agreeing to cut the conversation shorter.
"Will do, Janice." Bella nodded at her, her brown eyes meeting Lilith's, practically telling her that they should leave before it got any more awkward.
The two girls walked out of the office and began to compare their schedules, seeing that most of their classes were the same except two of the electives, "That was uncomfortable." Lilith spoke, referring to the office lady.
Bella chuckled, "Yeah." She said, cutting the conversation short as they walked through the hallway to get to their lockers. The hallways were buzzing with students and their laughter as they joked before class started. Lilith didn't understand how they could be so energetic so early in the morning.
As they walked in silence, a boy walked over to them. "Hey, you're Isabella Swan and Lilith Bailey, the new girls?" He said, to which they nodded in confirmation, "Hi, I'm Eric, the eyes and ears of this place. Anything you need, tour guide, lunch date, shoulder to cry on?" He said and Lilith smiled slightly, the people here were strangely nice.
Bella looked like she was struggling to get the words out, feeling uncomfortable as students continued to stare as the trio walked passed them, "Uh, I'm really kind of the more suffer-in-silence type."
Eric thought for a moment. "Good headline for your feature." He suddenly said, "I'm on the paper, and your news, baby, front page."
"Why would we be front page?" Lilith asked, Forks really never had new people come to the school. She didn't understand why new students would be worthy enough to be on the front page of the school newspaper.
"No, we're not." Bella began to stutter, "You... Please don't have any sort of..."
"Woah. Chillax. No feature." Eric shrugged with a smile and Lilith frowned slightly, she never had been in the newspaper before and now she definitely wouldn't. It was fine though, she didn't want to be on it alone either.
"Thanks." Bella said and the group began to walk to their classes, Eric walking in a different direction to Bella and Lilith.
"Camera shy?" Lilith asked the brunette.
Bella gripped the strap of her bag, "More like life shy." She answered, "I usually make myself look like a fool in front of everyone and anything, especially cameras."
Lilith laughed, "Me, too. I never know what to do with my arms... or my face."
"Yeah, sorry if you wanted to be on the feature, I guess I kinda ruined that for you." Bella said to Lilith regretfully.
Lilith shrugged, "No, it's okay. Now that I think about it, it would be even more awkward if I was on it by myself just because I was new." It would make her look more like an attention seeker if she was on it by herself and in the article it said that Bella Swan also joined on the same day but didn't want a photo.
"Forks doesn't get new people often, so having two new girls is probably really big news." Bella said as they walked to the lockers so Lilith could put the heavy textbooks that she wouldn't need away, Bella looked at her schedule once again and groaned seeing that they had gym first, "We have gym now, it's going to be a nightmare."
"Yeah, hopefully they give us some easy sport to play that would be hard for me to accidentally hit someone on the head with a ball." Lilith smiled as they made their way to the locker rooms near the gymnasium, "Like badminton."
"Badminton?" Bella asked, confused by her suggestion.
"Yeah, badminton, it's hard for the shuttlecock to hit someone on the head, and if does, it doesn't hurt as much unless you smack it really hard." Lilith explained herself as she got changed into her gym clothes, "My dad taught me when we lived in Phoenix and we used to always play it when we were bored. It was the only sport I wasn't completely uncoordinated at."
"You're from Phoenix also?" Bella asked with wide eyes as she also had moved from there, she was surprised that she hadn't seen Lilith around before then, "How come I've never seen you in town before?"
"My family and I keep to ourselves; people think we're weird. And Phoenix is huge." The Bailey witch says—that and they didn't want anyone to find out that they were witches.
"Oh, that makes sense." Bella nods. Either way, she was glad that Lilith and her got along, they had the same personality and it meshed well. The two walked into the gym and Lilith grimaced as she looked at the nets, "What? What are we playing?"
"Definitely not badminton." Lilith groaned. There were going to be a lot of accidental injuries today. Her nose turned up in disgust, "Volleyball."
The gym teacher explained the rules and sorted the class into groups, the kids already knowing how to play as it was the sport assigned for the semester and they had been playing it for several lessons already, he just had to repeat it for Lilith and Bella. Lilith tried to soak up some courage and some skills to be able to play without embarrassing herself or hurt someone, but, Bella went the step further and tried to convince the teacher to not let her play. Lilith admired the fact that she tried, but, she knew it was no use. After telling Bella good luck, and to not hit anyone, the two warmed up before the teacher blew the whistle to start the lesson.
She was grateful that she was at least in the same group as Bella as they played, but, once she saw what skills Bella had, she knew they were in trouble as they both sucked terribly. Whenever the ball came towards Lilith, she did the best that she could at hitting it in the direction that would send it over the net to the other team, or at least hit it in general. Most of her teammates often covered for her and made sure that the ball never went to Lilith, or help her out if they saw the ball not going as far as she would want it to. The girl was only five foot one, they felt bad for her.
Bella, on the other hand, just stood in the back of the court, slapping the ball away whenever it went in her direction. She often got in the way of the other teammates who were trying to get to the ball, not moving quick enough to get out of the way. The ball eventually came over towards Bella again and she attempted to hit it away, only to send it towards a completely different court and hit a boy at the back of the head, "Woah!" The boy cried out as Bella and Lilith both winced at the scene of what just happened.
Bella quickly began to walk over to the boy who had turned around to see who caused the ball to hit him, "I'm sorry. I told them not to let me play." Bella apologised to him despite the fact that her team was glaring at her for making them lose a point.
Lilith walked over to grab the ball from the boy as he rubbed the back of his head, trying to shake off the pain to make himself look tough in front of Bella, "No way. No, no, no. That's—that's... you're Isabella, right?" He stuttered at her, "And... Lily?"
"Lilith." The blonde corrected at the same time as Bella said, "Just Bella."
Mike held his hand out, "Yeah. Hey, I'm Mike Newton."
"Nice to meet you." Lilith smiled. Her head turned just as a girl came jogging over to them.
"She's got a great spike, huh?" She commented jokingly, causing Mike to chuckle, "I'm Jessica, by the way." She introduced herself, Lilith noticed her eyes would switch between the girls and Mike to observe what his reaction would be towards the girls and she then realised that she had a crush on Mike, "Hey, you're from Arizona, right?"
"Yeah." Bella nodded.
"Texas, technically." Lilith corrected.
"Aren't people from Arizona suppose to be, like, really tan?" She asked, laughing lightly at herself, thinking she made a funny observation.
"Yeah. Maybe that's why they kicked us out." Bella said, picking at her fingernails awkwardly. Mike began to laugh hard, causing Jessica to join in, but Lilith could tell that it was a fake laugh to impress him.
"You're good." Mike commented.
"That's so funny." Jessica said, her tone not matching the words as Lilith could tell that she really didn't think it was that funny.
Lilith rocked on her feet, feeling that it was getting awkward, "We're gonna... get back to the game..." She said, waving at Mike and Jessica as she and Bella walked back to their court.
Bella fake glared at Lilith, "You jinxed me."
Lilith winced, "Sorry."
