ˣ‿ˣ Chapter Ten ˣ‿ˣ

When I wake up, the beeping of monitors and sterile hospital air bids me a good morning. I groan, cleaning the area around my eyes and rubbing the fogness away.

"Good morning, alpha. We were worried."

I turn to see doctor Holland standing next to some machines. I go to say 'good 'morning' but I start coughing instead. He hurries to get me a glass of water and I greedily drink all of it.

"What happened?"

"You were in the kitchen when you started experiencing enormous pain. Don't you remember?"

I try to think and remember calling for Zayn after I fall on the floor. I tell him that. "Then after, I don't remember."

"Beta Zayn came to me and I went to work. The next morning, you were sleeping so I didn't get to ask, but it was highly important that I drew your blood."

"Of course, I don't see why I would be mad at you. You were trying to find out why that happened to me. Is it afternoon?" I ask, since he mentioned 'next morning' and it sounded suspicious.

He hesitated. "You were asleep for a week." My eyes widen. I stop talking and take a moment to let that sink in. Fuck, my duties. I had so much to do.

"Hey, doc. Did you figure out why—"

"I believe it's your mate because you, dear alpha, are in perfect condition."

"My… my mate?"

"Yes," he nods. "Did you meet them?"

I gulp. I cannot tell him about that hunter. It would be preposterous. He sees my hesitation and I know I screwed up. I should have not waited so long to answer. I sigh and nod.

"I won't tell anyone, but I need to know."

"I met him on the day Jackie were shot. He stood in front of the man and pushed his gun up before it fired again. Then the man hit him and he fell unconscious." I avoid the doctor's eyes. "Then we ran."

"You left him there?" I can gear the frown in his tone. Mate's are the blessings from our Moon Goddess. It's considered one of the biggest sins to reject or ignore one's mate, because you ignore a part of yourself and your wolf.

"He's a hunter. I don't do hunters."

"Are you mad?! He's your mate, hunter or not! He saved your lives, risking his own. And you didn't even bother telling anyone of him or go find him. Imagine the pain he is going through! This what you've felt is nothing compared to his real pain, especially because you aren't mated! And you fainted and were asleep for a week!" He sighs and I lower my head even lower. "You're a great alpha, but sometimes I'm so disappointed in you." He sighs again and I know he shakes his head. His footsteps echoing through the room as he leaves.

"Don't you think I am?" I whisper but he's already out of the door. I don't think he heard me. I turn my head towards the windows and a lone tear escapes my eye without permission.
