𝓓EAR 𝓞LIVER,

I remember that our conversation
Was interrupted by a siren
Rushing away, who knows where?
I was scared because, always
When I hear that sound,
I think of something serious.
And I didn't realize that for you and me,
Nothing could be more serious
Than our parting.
Then, as now, we looked at each other.
We wanted to stay embraced, but instead,
With a smile, I walked you down the usual road.
I kissed you as always and gently told you:

"Distance, you know, is like the wind.
It extinguishes small fires,
But it lights the big ones "

OUTER BANKS, NORTH CAROLINA ( 2020 )

ISLA COLEMAN return to the Outer Banks was a ripple in the water that promised to become a storm. A year wasn't long to be away, but in a place like this-where every whispered rumor turned into gospel-it was long enough for the balance to shift, for old bonds to fray and new lines to be drawn. The ferry rocked gently beneath her feet as she stepped onto the dock, the salt-heavy breeze tangling her hair. The sunlight caught her features, sharp and defined, as if the Outer Banks itself were taking her measure after so much time away.

She paused for just a second, eyes scanning the shoreline she used to know like the back of her hand. The sand dunes and swaying sea oats looked the same, but the air felt different now-charged, expectant. Isla adjusted her sunglasses and moved forward, the distinct click of her expensive sandals on the weathered wooden planks announcing her arrival.

A Kook by name and nature, Isla Coleman had always walked the thin, unsteady line between admiration and envy in the Outer Banks. Even now, she carried herself with an effortless grace, her presence a sharp contrast to the laid-back chaos of the island's rhythm. People noticed her, they always had-but for all the whispers and stolen glances, none dared approach. Not yet.

The Coleman estate waited for her at the edge of the island, its sprawling balconies and manicured lawns a glaring reminder of where she came from. But the house didn't feel like home anymore-not after the year she'd spent away at an exchange school overseas, where she had learned what it felt like to be untethered. Coming back felt like stepping into a photograph she no longer belonged in.

The island wasn't as she'd left it either. The careful divide between the Kooks and the Pogues felt sharper now, the lines more rigid. And she wasn't naive enough to think she could slip back into her old life without consequence. Not with Oliver Reyes still here.

Oliver.

The name alone was enough to summon memories she had no business revisiting. She thought about him more than she cared to admit during her year away, though she wouldn't have dared to reach out. When Isla had boarded that plane, they were barely speaking-if it could even call what they did speaking.

She hadn't expected to miss him, but the truth of it hit her the moment the island came into view. Oliver Reyes, the Pogue who once made her laugh so hard her sides hurt, was now the Pogue who met her gaze with a kind of simmering defiance, as if daring her to remember what they used to be.

The memory of their last conversation-a brutal, cutting argument that neither had been willing to walk away from-clung to her like the humidity. They had been kids then, or close enough to it, caught somewhere between shared laughter and unspoken resentment. She didn't even know what they'd been fighting about by the end. But she knew how it felt when the door closed behind her, and he didn't try to stop her from leaving.

The tension between them now was almost palpable, though neither had said a word to the other. Not yet.

Their first encounter came quickly. She hadn't been back on the island for 24 hours when she saw him, leaning against the side of his old boat with an ease that shouldn't have rattled her. He hadn't changed much-same dark eyes, same infuriating smirk. But there was something sharper about him now, something that said he wasn't just a boy trying to keep up with the world anymore. He was a part of it, rough edges and all.

"Didn't think you'd come back," he said, voice calm but heavy with meaning.

Isla's lips curved into a practiced smile, the kind she knew could cut just as deeply as words. "Didn't think you'd care."

His gaze held hers, steady and unflinching. "I don't."

It wasn't true, and they both knew it. But they let the silence stretch between them, heavy and loaded, before she turned on her heel and walked away.

The island watched, as it always did. People whispered about them, about what used to be and what might still linger in the spaces they left behind. They talked about the Kook princess and the Pogue boy who once seemed inseparable, before pride and circumstances tore them apart. And now, with Isla back, the whispers grew louder.

The tension between them was impossible to ignore, even for those who didn't know the full story. It wasn't just history-it was the kind of connection that refused to die, no matter how much you tried to bury it. And though neither of them would admit it, the currents pulling them together were stronger than the ones keeping them apart.

The Outer Banks itself seemed to sense it, the way storms brew on the horizon long before the first drop of rain falls. Isla and Oliver were both too stubborn to take the first step, but the island had a way of forcing things into the light.

And so, the stage was set. For secrets to rise, for lines to be crossed, and for the past to find them both again. Because in the Outer Banks, nothing ever stays buried for long.
