chapter twenty-one; Consistent Mess
" I'm a sucker for romance. "
THE AUTUMN ALWAYS seemed to go quicker than the rest of the year's seasons. The only thing that seemed to stop time, was the first quidditch game.
"Okay," Madeline said, eyes glancing over the Ravenclaw team. "I know we've had a bad couple of years, but we have this. Slytherin play to win, but we refuse to lose."
"We're never going to win the quidditch cup," Jules said quietly, though her emotion was more sad than angry.
"Yes, we will," Madeline stated stronger, "We—"
"Hey, Maddie."
The brunette swallowed thickly, her grip tightening on her broom slightly. For reasons unknown, Colin Hughes decided to pay a visit to the team before their first game.
"Hughes."
"Good luck," Colin stated, a charming grin on his face as he patted Madeline's shoulder. "Nico was a great captain, you have a lot to live up to."
"A great captain doesn't lose over half of their games," Madeline said, using every ounce of confidence she had.
Colin seemed both impressed and amused by this, patting the girl once more before leaving.
"He's right, Keeler was a good captain—"
"But he's not the captain anymore," Madeline snapped at Miles Halter, the boy recoiled in shock. "This is my team, and we're going to win because we're tired of being underestimated."
"Yeah!" Kai shouted, pulling Madeline into a sort of headlock, "Let's do this!"
Lily Myers was the first to join in cheers before the rest of the team fell along with it. Madeline just allowed Kai to force her into the excitement because her nerves and anger overshadowed all else.
The team entered the pitch once hearing the announcer introduce them, and somehow the stands looked bigger than ever before. That there were far more people, she couldn't tell if the cheering was cheering or shouting, it was terrifying.
Until she saw a cluster of people with signs, painted bronze and blue. Bluebelle was front and center, her blonde hair a deep blue. Around her were Lily Evans, Marlene McKinnon, and all four Marauders.
All wearing Ravenclaw colors, all screaming loudly, waving signs that varied from Madeline's name to the team's.
"You're a good keeper, Maddie," Kai's voice brought Madeline back to the pitch, the girl looking up at him, "That's what you are before the captain, don't overthink it."
The girl nodded strongly, walking towards the middle of the field. She felt like an imposter, shaking the hand of the Slytherin team captain before taking to the air, claiming her place in front of the rings.
Madeline Potter felt undeserving of the bright blue captain's title she wore.
ϟ
"She got her quidditch skills from me."
"You can't keep to save your life!"
Lily, Marlene, and Remus laughed at the Potter siblings arguing. The group had all made a trip to the kitchen, eight students scattered around the long wooden table in the center of the room eating various kinds of ice cream.
"And I'm the one that taught Maddie how to play," Kai pointed, raising his hands in defense when both James and Sirius glared, "You lot didn't let her!"
"That's true," Bluebelle agreed, stealing a spoonful of Kai's chocolate ice cream as she did, "She used to whine about it."
"Who else was I meant to play quidditch with?" Madeline defended. "He's my brother, that's what normal siblings do!"
"I didn't want my little sister following me around," James said.
"You're the same age."
"I'm 15 minutes older, Lily-Flower."
Madeline wordlessly thumped James on the back of the head.
"Thank you," Lily flashed the girl a smile.
"No problem."
"Don't do that," James said panicked, looking between the two girls, "I don't like that, stop it."
"James," Madeline sighed, reaching across the table to grab Lily's hand. "We have to tell you something."
"No!"
Both girls burst into laughter at James' genuinely frantic look, this, however, only made him irritated.
"You're both rude."
"Don't be a spoilsport," Lily teased, making James blush slightly.
"So, we're all in agreement, then?" Sirius questioned loudly.
"About what?" Madeline laughed out, furrowing her brows at Sirius' growing grin.
"That Maddie's the best captain Ravenclaw's ever had."
"Hell yeah!"
Everyone turned to Marlene at her outburst, the blonde didn't shrink back as most others would. She actually reached an arm around Sirius to pat Madeline's shoulder in encouragement.
"She's alright," James mumbled.
"She's definitely the best," Bluebelle smiled, nudging her best friend.
"To Mads," Remus said loudly, holding a spoonful of ice cream up.
Peter was the first to cheers him, quickly scooping up a spoonful of cookie dough ice cream to clash it into Remus' strawberry. James followed, and then it was just a mess of ice cream and miscellaneous words.
"To Mads," Sirius said quietly, the rest of the voices drowning him out to everyone's ears aside from Madeline. He was looking at her discreetly, despite his spoon being somewhere in the middle of the table, ice cream dripping down his hand.
The girl smiled gently, scooting over slightly so her leg was pressed to Sirius from hip to ankle. The boy's smile broadened, turning back to the group and purposefully starting an ice cream fight.
ϟ
"Are you screwing Sirius Black?"
Madeline could do nothing but stare blankly at Bluebelle, who was attempting to decipher her best friend's reaction.
Kai Declan laughed loudly.
"Blue, Maddie's not gonna fall for Black's stupid act," Kai giggled, shoving the blonde's shoulder.
But the girls remained staring at each other.
". . . Right?" Kai questioned, his laughter fading, "Maddie?"
"I'm not screwing anyone," Madeline stated evenly.
"But. . ." Bluebelle prompted.
"James would kill me if I even looked at him, why would I ever—"
"You're totally with him."
"Shut up!"
Bluebelle raised an eyebrow with a cocky smirk, settling back in her chair with crossed arms.
"Okay, so I'm just an idiot, then?"
"No one else knows," Madeline assured Kai quietly, glaring at Bluebelle, "Don't tell anyone."
"Mads, I'm your best friend!" Bluebelle said offendedly, "I'm not gonna rat you out!"
"But?"
"But it's stupid," The blonde said bluntly, "Sneaking around with him, you'll get caught."
"Don't be so pessimistic, Blue," Kai frowned.
"What, you support it?"
"I'm a sucker for romance," Kai shrugged as if to say 'what can you do?'.
"You're an idiot," Bluebelle corrected, turning to Madeline, "And so are you. You know I love you, and I'm only saying this because in the long run, it won't be good for you. Stop before you can't."
"I tried," Madeline admitted quietly, "But I really fancy him, Blue. And he fancies me, I mean, really cares about me. I need that right now."
"No, you don't," Bluebelle groaned, "Look, get yourself into a bad situation if you want to, but you don't need Sirius bloody Black to care about you."
"You're way too motivational for me."
"It's not my fault you're consistently a mess, Maddie."
