The Newt, the Witch, and the Suitcase
Everything in Tegwen told her to walk away from the scene of the man struggling to fit himself in the suitcase, except for the one little voice in the back of her head, telling her to pursue her curiosity.
"For the love of..." Jacob gave a final boost before disappearing into the suitcase and having it slam shut after him leaving Tegwen alone in the spare bedroom. She turned around, wondering if the noise had disturbed Tina and Queenie enough to come investigate, but the home remained silent. The woman cautiously walked over to examine the suitcase, kneeling down before it. Observing the brackets, she saw one of the locks that were deemed "Muggleworthy" before she clicked it open. Appearing before her was a normal suitcase, but when she closed it and flipped the lock over, opening again would open up something far different.
Peering into the suitcase a second time, Tegwen saw the steps leading down, along with Jacob on the ground struggling to get up after crashing down. Her hands reached to close it over but she couldn't bring herself to do so.
"I hate myself," she sighed. "I truly do."
Climbing down she found herself in a completely different environment than the Goldstein spare bedroom. She was surrounded by cupboards and shelves filled with jars, netting, and potted plants. There were hundreds of things all around hanging from the walls such as drawings and maps leaving the area cluttered but at the same time, looking incredibly organized.
Jacob was sitting on a crate in the distance when Newt came into view and immediately spotted Tegwen in the corner. Jacob followed his gaze and saw the woman before turning red as Newt gave him a look.
"Oh, by the way, she was in the room when I was coming down here," Jacob added innocently.
"What are you doing here?" Newt questioned Tegwen.
She had planned on yelling at him, but she couldn't bring herself to do so. Mainly for the two reasons of, Jacob being present and the fact that all the things around her had become overwhelming in a short amount of time. She stood awkwardly in place rubbing her arm as his tone wasn't all that welcoming, then again, she didn't expect it to be. They hadn't been exactly exchanging friendlies since seeing each other again, mostly on her behalf.
Panic rose in her chest and she felt the need to flee as her fight or flight response kicked in rapidly. She turned to go but Newt stopped her as he called out to her.
"Stay," he said, addressing her as if she were a child or a Crup pup. Her mouth opened to lay out a heated response, but she decided against it at the last second. The man returned his attention to Jacob, who had been watching the scene between the two before Newt turned his head to examine the bite on his neck.
"Ah, that's definitely the Murtlap," Newt said as he began moved away from Jacob, explaining that muggles were more susceptible to the bites. He conjured up some poultice to apply to the wound while Tegwen watched silently, still standing in the same spot.
"Now stay still," He told Jacob.
"Yes, and if you're a good little boy, you might get a treat," Tegwen replied in a high-pitched voice. "He even might take you for a walk."
Newt turned and gave her a look, his jaw slightly clenched before she peered down at her feet. He proceeded to hand Jacob some pills explaining the poultice would stop the sweating and the pills would ease the twitch the man was experiencing.
She couldn't help but watch as Newt decided to make himself more comfortable by removing his coat and undoing his tie, looking as though he was preparing to do some sort of work. He hacked some meat into a bucket using a cleaver before handing the bucket to Jacob.
"Take that," he instructed, once again leaving Jacob puzzled. The man did as he was told as Newt instructed him to follow. He turned around and looked in Tegwen's direction.
"Are you coming?"
She shook her head, not bringing herself to make eye contact with him. He stood there for a moment longer, as if he were waiting for her to change her mind, but she remained quiet and still.
"Alright then..." he said finally. "Just...do not touch anything."
"Trust me, I learned that lesson a long time ago," Tegwen said quietly.
Newt's expression softened slightly from the stern look he had on his face previously, but he didn't say anything to the woman as he left with Jacob.
Tegwen stood still long after Newt and Jacob were out of sight. She planned on disobeying him and leaving back up the steps, returning to Queenie's room. She would have to find a better moment to yell at him when they weren't surrounded by a hoarder's dream place and without Jacob's presence. Standing in place, she felt like a child who had been set to stand in the corner and think about their actions, but as she thought about it, she had nothing to be sorry about. She was also a grown woman which meant she could do whatever she wanted.
Turning around, she went for the steps when she heard what sounded like screeching in the distance. It certainly didn't sound human but she couldn't write it off as it not belonging Newt or Jacob. Reaching for her wand, Tegwen decided that she would only investigate and if everything checked out, she would return to Queenie's room.
However, as she walked around, Tegwen realized how vast the area really was inside the suitcase. It was remarkable actually, the woman had to admit that. She had experience working with Extension charms, mainly for the bag she had to carry during her collection trips. She had to keep all the plants before they were set off to where they were needed. However, her bags were never as extensive as Newt's suitcase.
Walking around, Tegwen didn't come upon Newt or Jacob, but rather a magnificent creature that seemed to have all the land it wanted to its access. She had never seen one before in person but heard countless things about them from Tina and Queenie as it was one of the four house creatures. It was magnificent in person, more so than any textbook Tegwen had witnessed it in.
With a head similar to a hippogriff, though, Tegwen instantly felt nervous, knowing the golden rule of never squaring off with a hippogriff. Even though it wasn't the same type of creature, she really wasn't trying to face another creature head on again, knowing it wouldn't end in her favor. From what she had seen, the Thunderbird had six wings and it's coloring reminded her of a cloudy day. Each flap of their wings, she felt the powerful gusts of an approaching storm, blowing her hair all around.
Taking a step back quickly, Tegwen tried to make it look like she was submitting to the creature, but the Thunderbird came to land before her. The ground shook sending unpleasant vibrations up Tegwen's leg. Her entire body was shaking as she closed her eyes, cursing herself for being so stupid. Yet again, she found herself facing a beast that she had no business being in the presence of.
She took another two steps back, but that seemed to make the Thunderbird as it screeched, causing Tegwen to choke back a sob. Already the tears were streaming down her face as she raised her hands to her face. She thought about lowering herself to the ground and curling up into a tight ball to make herself look as small as possible. Hoping to prove that she was not a threat to the creature at all.
Beginning to crouch down, she suddenly felt a tug on the back of her jumper, pulling back quickly.
"Alright Frank, let's take it easy," Newt's voice chimed in her ears. Instantly, Tegwen lifted her head back up to see Newt distract the Thunderbird with meat. She backed away until she was a safe distance away from the scene, nearly crashing into Jacob.
"Are you alright?" The man asked her, bringing her to quickly wipe at her face to conceal the fact that she had been crying.
"I'm fine," she said with a sniff. "There's just a lot of dust down here-"
"There is not," the offended protest came from Newt as he reappeared. "Perhaps plenty of dander, but not dust. And I thought you were staying put?"
"I'm not a crup pup!" She snapped at him.
"What's a Crup pup?" Jacob asked curiously.
The two ignored his question as Newt just brushed by Tegwen and continued about his business. Tegwen crossed her arms in irritation as she followed, fearful of what else was lurking about. She didn't want to run into anything else on her own.
The amount of creatures that Newt had collected and hid within his suitcase, was beyond imaginable. Each creature had a habitat set up specific to their needs and likes, and all seemed rather happy to see Newt. She wondered if they were genuinely happy to see him or just more excited at the man carrying food for them.
He led them up a ramp after feeding a creature that Tegwen didn't recognize, nor did she want to in that moment. They entered what appeared to be a miniature forest when they came upon a creature she did recognize.
"Bowtruckles," she muttered under her breath. She hadn't seen the creatures in years that she nearly forgot the name. She remembered seeing them on the outskirts of the Forbidden Forest when she attended Hogwarts.
Tegwen had always been so tempted to enter the Forest in order to find the black flowers that grew without sunlight. But she had never been brave enough to venture in on her own, and she often listened to the rules that the school put in place.
Unlike someone.
Bowtruckles were fairly harmless, so she decided to remain in the company of the plant-like creatures. At least, she felt safe in their company as they moved about.
"Titus? Finn, Poppy, Marlow, Tom?" He called out, gathering the bowtruckles around. A small smile pulled at the corner of her lips as she watched Newt pull out another bowtruckle from his pocket.
He turned to Jacob to explain. "He had a cold. He needed some body warmth."
"Aww," Jacob cooed.
He tried to bring the bowtruckle named Pickett and place him the others, but the bowtruckle seemed awfully attached him. It clung onto the man's hand, almost begging him to stay with Newt.
"Now come on, Pickett!"
"Stop!" Tegwen called out, hearing the desperate little noises emitting from the creature. The area grew silent as all eyes fell on her. She cleared her throat, looking down at her feet. "I mean...let him stay with you. Just a little while longer..he's obviously really upset right now..and...I'm just going to stop talking."
It obviously wasn't her call with how Newt handled the creatures, but she really did feel bad for the little bowtruckle, enough that she had to say something.
It was quiet for a moment longer before Newt spoke again.
"Alright," he said," but this is exactly why they accuse me of favoritism." The bowtruckle happily settled back in the man's pocket, looking incredibly relieved. Newt shot a glance in Tegwen's direction but she kept her gaze focused on her feet.
Newt led the way once more, looking slightly concerned as he couldn't locate "Dougal" as he noted an empty nest. Tegwen had to assume that it was one of the many creatures that were running loose in the city. He brought them over to a nest of what he told Jacob were Occamy. The Occamy babies seemed excited as he approached like little ducklings looking up to their mother, bringing Tegwen to snort to herself.
Thinking that she was laughing at him, Newt turned around and held one of them out to her. She quickly jumped back and shook her head, declining the offer immediately.
"Oh come on, Twiggy, he's holding one," Newt said pointing out that Jacob was holding onto one occamy with a happy look on his face.
"Good for him," she grumbled. He continued to hold it out to her, but she didn't make any movement to hold it. Newt sighed before returning to his work, although, he seemed very glad that Jacob was taking an interest.
Tegwen wanted to head back to Queenie's room and just go to bed as she felt emotionally and physically drained. As the men were distracted, she headed back in another direction, only to spot a creature that brought up horrible memories.
"N-n-no!"
