Have you ever asked yourself why you need to study so hard?
Have you ever felt like none of the teachers understands you?
Have you ever got frustrated by the school’s stupid system
that never asks you if you want it?
Ever wondered why the school is so eager to have talented students
but never cares how we’re doing?
And how long do we have to put up with it?
Let me tell you a story of a school called Riverdale Hans,
and a program called ...
The Gifted...
Welcome all of you to Class 4 of Riverdale Hans High School.
This side of the school house only has class 4.
Class 5 and 6 are on the other side.
This is a boarding school, so we provide dormitories for all students.
A boy ran away from a male teacher. It looks like he snuck a smart phone into the school.
"I told you to stop! Where are you going? Stop!" The middle aged man kept yelling.
Listen carefully.
You all have been selected to study
at one of the top schools in the country.
The boy laughed as the teacher continued to chase him.
"Stop! I told you stop!"
Our alumni have good and stable careers with bright futures.
90% of them are nationally renowned with promising futures.
The remaining 10%...
They're now at the top of the last floor. No escape. He threw the phone down. A small parachute made of plastic carried it softly into the thick bushes down.
"Stop! Where are you going?
I told you to stop!
Where are you running off to?"
He slowed down to stop but before the man could catch up to the boy. A woman stood in front of him. She wore high heels and carried a stick. The headmistress of River Hans.
"Annyeonghaseo". The boy greeted
"What’s the commotion?" The lady asked
"This student stole a phone that had been confiscated, Ms. Junah" The man reported
"Typical Room 8." She scoffed looking at his badge.
"Give me back the phone." She said
"I don’t have it." The boy put up his hands in defense
"Liar!" The man screamed
"You must have thrown it out."
"No way. It’s a mobile phone." The boy said looking at the teacher like he said something foolish.
"It will be destroyed if I throw it away."
Junah closed her eyes to calm herself down and asked,
"What do you want to do?"
"I seriously don’t have it.I can take off my pants." The boy said as he began to unbutton his pants. Before he could completely pull it down, the lady decided to stop him. She was sure that he didn't have it.
"There’s nothing to go on so I’ll let this one go." She said sternly
"Go back to your class now."
"Yes, Miss." He bowed.
And that's how our protagonist found himself getting nagged by his homeroom teacher.
"This is an example of an inattentive student.
Mark my word: he will never be moved to another room.
You should apply what you‘ve learned in real life.
Don’t just play around like this student.
Now, let’s look at the parachute for egg drop.Mg refers to the weight."
My name is Myungchul
As you can see, I’m just a dumb kid.
Even though I got into one of the top schools in the country,
I ended up in the bottom classroom of the school.
I wouldn’t have any problems
if the school didn’t have some weird rules
to divide students based on their grades.
Myungchul began to stress his head out and almost pulled out all the bushes to search for his phone which the threw outside.
"Chul!" A voice called
"You’re quite advanced.
You used the parachute for egg drop. You’re taking this stuff seriously."
"You’re the one who came up with this plan for me." He started to defend himself.
"Stop right there.
I did come up with it but my plan takes two people.
You threw it out like this.
What if someone else found it?
You’d be screwed." The other person explained.
"Luckily, you found it and not someone else." Myungchul sheepishly said as he took the phone from the other's hands.
"Think it through next time. Don’t be a child." The other boy advices as they left to their dorms.
This is Han, my best friend.
He’s a perfect student from Room 1.
As my best friend, he is the best example of how being on top is so much different than the bottom.
Students from Room 1 have more privileges than others. They break before others, which means their meals are much more wholesome than mine. They have access to better facilities, from Wi-Fi to bathrooms.
Regarding the dorms,
students from Room 1 are entitled to choose their roommates.
If not for him, a student from Room 8 like me wouldn’t dream of a good
"But seriously…" Myungchul started.
"I don’t think it’s fair."
"What’s not fair?" Han asked from the other bed, not looking up from his book.
"The school’s classroom division. It only makes students feel worse." Myung Chul reasoned.
"When you say worse, does it include anything grave?" Han replied nonchalantly.
"No, but it’s frustrating" Myungchul huffed
Han rolled his eyes as he said now looking at the boy,
"That’s why the school has something called the placement test. This test gives students in the bottom like you a second chance. If you score high, you have a chance to move up.I, on the other hand, need to maintain my grade or I can end up at the bottom. To sum it up, if you want something nice, you need to focus on your study. Don’t stress about it. I think the system is good." Han explained.
"Have you noticed that students here work their assess off?" Myungchul continued to whine.
"Do you think those in other schools deliver the same level of dedication? It’s good that you plan to move up now. When we’re in class 5, the chance will be lower.Stop complaining and start studying!"
He’s right. Nobody wants to be in the bottom, so everyone is keen to study. Even students in Room 8 are striving to get their grades up.But is that the right way?
