No matter what this job was or would be, it was the wrong one, Sierra told the two men.
No jobs that started with someone doing a job for someone else, and especially not if those people were unknown. Unknown usually meant trouble.
With a "Thank you anyway" Sierra said goodbye and went to Marko to get her money. Many would have asked what it was, and if the amount was right, the next question would have been what it was. It might not be much, what she earned with her mini-jobs, but it was still enough to live on. To live well. No reason to want more and end up attracting the attention of the wrong people.
"Just a moment," Sierra heard someone say, so she looked around questioningly, because it could have been anyone, but it was the second man who had come to her with a note, "In case you change your mind. It's easy to find."
That would not happen, especially since Sierra did not even know his name and would not work for someone she did not know.
One thing that could change quickly, the man said, giving Sierra his hand to introduce himself as Barney Ross. When she took his hand, she could see a tattoo of a bird, a crow or a raven, on his arm. A tattoo she had seen before.
It took a while, Sierra had been on her way home for a long time, before it finally clicked. This Barney had the same design as the man she had met in Mexico City some years ago.
