~ Prologue ~
Two months had passed since the newborn attack, targeting Bella and I. Victoria sought revenge for her mate's death and aimed to exact it on Bella. I was targeted because I was a witch. My blood was like a drug to vampires, as Victoria had informed me. I had never bled around the Cullens, and in the deepest corners of my mind, I avoided thinking about it—what my blood might smell like to them, or what it smelled like at all.
I lay on my bed, eyes fixed on the ceiling, a smile flickering across my face as I recalled the last two months. The best two months of my life, I admitted to myself. Emmett was the perfect gentleman. We talked, laughed, kissed... but most of all, we enjoyed each other's company. Our dating life wasn't typical since we had technically never been on a date. Emmett didn't eat food, and I would never put him through that. But visiting each other's houses was enough for me.
"Thinking about me?" Emmett's voice echoed through the air as I turned my head to the open window, where he stood.
"Bet you wish you had Edward's gift right now. All these dirty thoughts running through my mind," I said softly, seductively, biting my bottom lip. It piqued Emmett's attention, and a low growl rumbled from the back of his throat as he stalked toward the bed.
"Why do you have to be so mean?" Emmett remarked playfully as he sat on the edge of the bed, his eyes never leaving mine. "I came over to give you something," he announced, making me bite my bottom lip a little harder.
"Hope it's a kiss," I teased. He chuckled briefly before leaning down to place his lips softly upon mine. The kiss was electric, as always, and I deepened it, leaning up into him. The kiss broke, as I was now sat up, my legs crossing, and my eyes never left his golden orbs.
"Here," Emmett said, bringing his hand around to reveal two white envelopes. "Since I was coming over, Alice asked me to drop these off." He extended his hand slightly, holding out the envelopes.
I looked at them for a moment before realization dawned on me. "Already?" I exclaimed excitedly, gripping the envelopes from him. I carefully opened the one with my name on it and pulled out the white card inside. What greeted me was the most beautiful wedding invitation I had ever seen. The elegant printing and intricate, yet simple design took my breath away, making the moment feel even more special.
"It's come by so fast," I announced, raising my gaze from the invitation to lock eyes with Emmett.
"Poor sucker," Emmett remarked, meaning Edward. It made me chuckle before I lightly slapped the back of my hand onto his chest, and he laughed as well.
"It's romantic," I countered with a wide smile, revealing my weakness for romance. After all, what was there not to love about love? "Maybe you can learn a thing or two from Edward," I teased playfully, watching as Emmett's expression shifted to one of mock shock as if I had just delivered a punch to his gut.
"I am totally romantic," he retorted defensively. "I got you some roses the other day," he pointed out.
"And they are beautiful," I replied, dropping the invite onto the bed, before leaning forward to plant a soft, tender kiss on his lips. "I did thank you, didn't I?" My voice lowered, taking on a seductive tone.
"I can't remember," Emmett replied, as I felt him smile against my lips before bringing them back to mine. Instinctively, my arms wrapped around his strong neck as I lifted myself up, deepening the kiss as heat surged through my body. I felt his hands roam around my back, pressing gently, his fingers leaving a lingering impression as they glided across my shirt.
Gradually, the tender kiss blossomed into a whirlwind of passion and desire, igniting a fervent rhythm. The kisses grew more intense and urgent, sparking a surge of eroticism. Breaking away from the kiss, he trailed his lips to my neck, where they found the soft, sensitive skin. A moan escaped my lips as I tilted my neck, offering it to him, inviting him to lavish his kisses upon me.
With little warning, Emmett seized me, his strong arms wrapping around me as he effortlessly pushed me backwards. We tumbled back onto the bed together, him now hovering above me. His kisses remained fixed on the tender spot he had been focusing on, igniting a fire within me. Heat surged through my body as his touch intensified, sending shivers down my spine.
"Emmett," his name slipped from my lips amidst a chorus of moans, the desire palpable in my voice. It had been on my mind ever since my Grams and I talked about it. It haunted my dreams, turning them into the most vivid and intense fantasies imaginable. Even now, the mere thought of it made my cheeks flush with a deep, rosy hue, igniting a fire within me, and between my legs.
Suddenly, Emmett halted the cascade of kisses and leaned back, his strong arms bracing against the bed, drawing my attention to him. "We can't," he groaned, his voice deep with a tinge of frustration. This scenario had played out a few times before—the heat of the moment propelling us forward only to come to an abrupt halt. "I don't want to hurt you," he stated softly, his concern evident in his tone. I offered him a softened expression, a thin smile spreading across my face as I reassured him with my eyes.
"I understand," I said softly, raising both of my hands to cup his cheeks, my thumbs gently tracing over his flawless, marble-like skin. "Are you staying?" I questioned, doing one more round with my thumbs before my hands snaked their way to the back of his neck, as I began to play with his hair.
"I've got to get back," Emmett spoke. "Alice has us putting up the decorations," he remarked, a brief chuckle escaping his lips. Their energy seemed endless; they could go on forever without needing sleep.
"I know she wants me to come soon to do the flowers," I recalled our earlier phone conversation. She wanted me to use my magic to grow a few flowers for the trees that would surround the aisle.
"She got you roped in too," Emmett remarked, amused by Alice's ability to involve anyone in wedding planning.
"It's for my best friend," I replied quickly. "The day has to be perfect for her."
"You sound like Alice," he joked, his laughter resonating against me. "I know it's going to be perfect for me," Emmett paused, his gaze holding mine as I tilted my head, confusion etching my expression. "Because you'll be there," he answered, his words causing a rush of warmth to flood my cheeks, my smile stretching from ear to ear in response to his sweet sentiment.
Left speechless, I could only express myself through action. So, I leaned my head up and planted a sweet, tender kiss on his lips. I elongated the action, savouring every moment, as it was all I was receiving at that moment.
I ended the kiss gradually, allowing my lips to part from his with a lingering sensation. As my back pressed against the bed, I met his gaze, finding him wearing that familiar boyish grin that never failed to melt me.
"See you tomorrow," his husky voice echoed in the room as I nodded in response. Releasing my hands from around his neck, he leaned down and planted a quick peck on my cheek before disappearing in the blink of an eye. I propped myself up on my elbows to gaze out the window, observing the drapes gently swaying in the wind.
With a swift thought, the window slid down and shut on its own, as if a magical force had swept through the room. With a frustrated groan, I stopped leaning on my elbows and collapsed back onto the bed.
I longed to be intimate with him, to engage in the activities that couples typically enjoy. I craved the opportunity to explore and experiment together. It was frustrating that he needed to calculate every move, every touch. It shouldn't have bothered me as much as it did, but it weighed heavily on my mind...
I have strong feelings for this man, but our differences were becoming obstacles in our relationship. And I didn't want them to be.
