A wave of anxiety was prickling my spine, making my eyes snap open whenever my head went slightly tousled. I silently chided myself for being a nervous wreck, but I couldn't help it- tomorrow would be the day I had been anticipating for years. My first day at college. But now I think of it, my doom is nearing. I could almost hear the eerie music in the backdrop.

After a while of counting sheep, I decided that I wouldn't sleep. (surprise, surprise) I kicked my blankets away a bit too viciously, and turned my head a fraction to take a glimpse at the clock which was ticking away dully. 3:30. Time to get ready for the big, big day coming ahead. Heavy sarcasm intended.

I examined my face at the mirror, and the my half lidded emerald eyes stared back. Groaning, I splashed water onto my face, the icy sensation momentarily making my eyes flutter open, before relapsing into its sleepy mode. The streaks of silver on my pupils stood out in the pool of green, and I should be proud of my so called 'alluring eyes', but instead it made my pale complexion even more pallid. My strands of platinum hair fell into my eyes, and I swept them away. I had a lanky build, and limbs too long to be called graceful. I pulled on a crop top and denim jacket, and made my way to my room.

Unfortunately my muscles were taut and my whole body was tense, and I could feel the adrenaline pulsing in the air. Deciding to relax myself, I popped on my airpods and senorita poured into my ears. I hummed along a bit, but not so loudly because I didn't want to wake my mom up. After jazzing a bit, I  glanced at the clock, 4:00. I flopped onto my bed and started engrossing myself in The Great Gatsby.

...So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past...

"Raelyn, wake! Up!" I could almost see the marcato etched on the words at the other end.

"Yes moooom," I grumbled and dragged my yawn longer and longer. I heard my mother say something that sounded like dead fish. How to get on my mother's nerves 101: yawn until she says incoherent language. Also known as gibberish.

My mom would suffer a serious case of exploding in anger if i dont go. I shut my book and trotted into the living room, only to be greeted by a furious mom. Whew. At least she wasn't spitting fire like the last time. Literally.

"This is one hell of a bag." she said. Trust my mom to do the remarks. She had that kind of flare. She thrust my kanken bag into my hands, and my novels scattered onto the floor with a thud. Oops.

My mom glared at me so hard I swear there would be a hole burnt  onto my forehead later. I shrugged helplessly, and dived for my books.

My mom was still shooting me dirty looks. Champion of staring contest is hers to claim.

"Uh..mom, I will be away for quite a period, so maybe taking a book or two would be good for my free time," I reasoned, sitting down onto a stool.

Without warning, I was tackled into a hug:

"Raelyn baby.. I'll miss you.." Typical mom.

Then her face was serious as she deadpanned:

"No partying no drinking  no sleeping with boys..."

I'm seventeen, not three, and seriously, sleeping with boys? I would be the last one to ever have any interest of all sorts in boys. Get a grip, mom.

"Such middle age mood swings.." I muttered playfully and mom shot me another cold glare that Snape would be proud of, "Mom, I'll miss you loads too,"

"Baby...I love you..." she said in a tone that reminded me of praying to dead people in funerals. That was exactly what she said at Dad's funeral.

"Mom, I'm going to college, not going to my death," I reminded her in mock solemnity. But going to college can result in dead cells. No kidding.

She pushed the platter of bacon to me, which was sizzling hot. I shoved them into the mouth, and the heat burnt my tongue, sending me spitting them out.

My mom grumbled in disgust:

"Seventeen and still eats like two,"

I grinned widely and wolfed down the toast. My mom tutted and rose from the stool. I peered at her face. Her eyes were a shade of warm chocolate brown, and she had black curls mingling with white strands that she hated. I found it exotic, though, but I inherited nothing physically from her. Mentally, duh. We both had that drawl, and the sarcastic, snide comments. Hmm, also glares that kill. Usual poise, mom, usual poise. But that was with mean  or really close people. For strangers, I had a entirely different façade.

I had everything from my late dad. Icy hair, almond shaped green eyes, and the long lashes. He was sort of reserved and collected, and like me, reads like a nerd. My memories with him had dulled into murky hues. I blinked back tears. Touchy subject.

As if mom was afraid she would tear up more, she said one last: call me! and shooed me away.

Lips twitching, I took the bus to my college- Everwood College.

It was drizzling quite a bit, the rain creating a melodic tap against the window on the bus. It came to an abrupt jolt, and I clung onto the rail for my dear life. Eugh. I hate buses. The metallic tang hung in the air, making bile rise in my throat. I forced it down. My face must be green, because the man next to me glanced at me, concerned. I mustered up a smile that had a touch of 'thanks, but no thanks' hidden. My speciality of the day.

"Next stop, Everwood High," The blare of the speaker jolted me out of my revive. I hitched on my backpack and stumbled off the bus.
