Chapter 6 - Flutterpaw
*4 moons later*
"Oh my StarClan! Oh my Starclan! OH MY STARCLAN!!!!" Gingerpaw screeched excitedly as she sprinted into the apprentice den and practically tripped over Flutterpaw and Cloverpaw in the late leaf-fall morning.
"AH WHAT!" Flutterpaw jumped awake, her back fur bristling. "IS THERE A FIRE IN CAMP?" Cloverpaw rolled onto her paws as while, her hind legs raised.
Fernpaw padded in as well, giggling softly. "Gingerpaw, what do you say to your cousins?"
Gingerpaw was grinning ear to ear and meowed loudly, "We are ALL being ASSESSED TODAY!!!!" Flutterpaw gasped and squealed excitedly. Now I will finally be at the same rank with Falconblink! Sort of I guess. And we can hang out a lot more!! How did I ever think that tom was annoying? "That means we all probably become warriors TODAY!!!" she heard her blind sister yowl and wiggle her tail, excitedly.
"I was going to say that you should apologize but getting excited works too because we might ALL become WARRIORS TODAY!!!!!" Fernpaw barreled into the other three apprentices with joy in her voice and a spring in her step.
They were still giggling excitedly when all of their four mentors walked in. Snowberry laughed. "We are starting your assessments first thing! Which means right now! So I hope you give it all you got Flutterpaw!" Don't mess this up, Flutterpaw. This is your moment.
"You're definitely ready, Cloverpaw. Im sure you Β will do just as great as everyone else, if not better," Swiftstripe meowed, causing Cloverpaw to beam brightly. She will become one of the warriors, just like every cat in ThunderClan! thought Flutterpaw excitedly.
"Good luck guys!" Gingerpaw mewed as she bounced out with her mentor, Leafmoon, along with Fernpaw and Nightfang.Β
"We better go if you two want to become warriors before sunhigh!" said Snowberry, pushing Flutterpaw with her tail. The gold she-cat meowed a quick, "You'll do amazing!" to Cloverpaw before striding out with her own mentor.Β
And while she was walking through camp, she ran into her crush, Falconblink. "Oh, um, hello, Flutterpaw," he meowed awkwardly, blushing. Flutterpaw frowned. Ever since Falconblink became a full medicine cat, it seemed like he ever had time for her anymore because she was just a silly apprentice. He was always in a rush to cure cats and save lives. Did all the private training sessions and hunting trips mean nothing to him. Did she mean nothing to him? Sometimes she wondered if opening her heart was a bad idea. Maybe since she was taking her assessment, Falconblink might care for her again.
"Just so, you know, I might become a warrior today." "Wow. Really? That's great!" "Oh, now you care about me?"Β
Falconblink took a step back, confused. "What?"
Β "Oh, you know full well what I'm talking about! Since you earned your stupid medicine cat name, you've been ignoring me like greencough! I actually thought you liked me," Flutterpaw snapped. The gray tom opened his jaws to reply but she hissed. "It's been four moons. FOUR WHOLE MOONS since we actually had a full conversation. What is your deal, oh great and wise medicine cat? The worst part is that now because I'm becoming a warrior, you think I'm now grown-up and perfect for you! Congratulating me was the ONLY nice thing you said to me this whole season! Can't believe I thought I liked you and your ignorant, perfect eyes!" Then she stormed off through the thorn tunnel, ignoring the desperate "Flutterpaw!" from Falconblink.
Whence reached the middle of the forest, she met up with the other apprentices and Snowberry and looked her mentor straight in her green eyes. "I'm ready to prove myself. To some cats. Now, let's get this thing started."
Flutterpaw yowled in triumph after she passed her assessment with flying colors. She was sprinting back towards camp with her sister, laughing and smiling widely, not giving Falconblink a single thought. Cloverpaw did brilliant as well, even since her sister was blind.
When they reached ThunderClan camp with their mentors, Gingerpaw and Fernpaw were there waiting for them, looking anxious. "I passed. Did you guys pass? Oh no, please tell me if you passed," Fernpaw blurted out, nervously. "We passed! We passed! What about you, Gingerpaw?" Flutterpaw turned to her other cousin and was dismayed to see her looking grim.
"Oh no, Gingerpaw we're so sor-" "HA! Got ya! I passed, you furballs!" Then, they all squealed excitedly, chattering at every interesting thing. "I wonder what our warrior names will be! Our mentors just walked into the leader's den, oh my gosh! Ah, there's Thornstar, now!" The four apprentices sprinted under the rock as their leader called a clan meeting.
After all the cats gathered around, Thornstar made Robinkit, Maplekit, and Acornkit all apprentices. Then he began the once in a lifetime warrior ceremony. Then, he called each apprentice once by one starting with the first pair of siblings first, Fernpaw and Gingerpaw both.
"I, Thornstar, leader of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you as a warrior in their turn."
"Fernpaw and Gingerpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"They looked at each other, happily and said simultaneously. "I do.""Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Fernpaw, from this moment on you will be known as Ferncreek. Gingerpaw, from this moment on you will be known as Gingersplash. StarClan honors your virtues, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan."
Ferncreek smiled broadly as the Clan chanted their new names while Gingersplash bolted excitedly to her mentor to thank her.
Thornstar looked at Flutterpaw. "Flutterpaw, please step forward."
The teal-eyed she-cat took a deep breath as Cloverpaw nuzzled her joyfully, along with Lionwing and Silverfern. She stepped forward towards her leader.
"I, Thornstar, leader of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you as a warrior in their turn," he raised his head towards the bright sunset, small stars appearing in the fading daylight. Then, Thornstar asked the question she was waiting for. "Flutterpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan even at the cost of your life?"
She glanced up and saw Falconblink looking down at his paws, sadly. Now he wasn't even paying attention to her ceremony!? She glared at him and shook her head, staring up at Thornstar. "I do," she meowed confidently.
"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Flutterpaw, from this moment on you will be known as Flutterleap. StarClan honors your skills and sparring, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan. You shall also be the mentor of Robinpaw."
"Flutterleap! Flutterleap! Flutterleap!"
Cloverpaw chanted as well, then turned her head, hopefully, waiting blindly and patiently for Thornstar to tell her to step forward so she can become a warrior.Β
The brown tom paused, looking a Cloverpaw for a long moment. "Clan dismissed."Β
Flutterleap's jaw dropped and the rest of the Clan gasped as the old leader returned to his den. Cloverpaw sat there stunned. Then, looked like she was about to start sobbing. "Swiftstripe....? What? Did you know-" "No. No I did not," the cream mentor growled audibly. Flutterleap never seen a mentor that angry before. Lionwing and Silverfern congratulated her and then followed Swiftstripe and Cloverpaw to meet with Thornstar while she waited outside. Flutterleap sighed. What in StarClan is Thornstar thinking? Doesn't he know that Cloverpaw passed? She did better than me! I still can't believe-
Falconblink then padded up to her and interrupted her train of thought, "Flutterleap. Hear me out." Flutterleap raised her eyebrow, but kept silent as he began. "Flutterleap. I never meant to hurt you. I never wanted to hurt you. but Velvetcloud has been pressuring me every second of every day, constantly reminding me of the medicine cat code for no reason. And she is very strongly against cats breaking the code. It's her top priority. You know, I...you know I like you so much, Flutterleap. I really, really, love you. But I don't want to get caught."
Flutterleap felt several emotions crawling up in her chest and her anger subside a little. "Then we won't. I promise."
Falconblink purred and stared fondly at Flutterleap as they both waiting for an update about her sister's news.
Flutterleap saw Swiftstripe burst out and stomp towards the warrior den while her parents walked down the ledge, looking shocked. Cloverpaw followed afterward, her tail dragging on the ground. Flutterpaw prayed it was an act.
"Cloverpaw what happened?" Falconblink finally asked.Β
"He said that I had to wait. Another moon. Because I wasn't ready. I have to wait on becoming a warrior. For another MOON. Because I'm blind. I waited on becoming an apprentice and now a warrior. I'm the same exact age as Flutterleap! I can't deal with the STUPID FOXHEART OF A LEADER ANYMORE! ARGGH!" she burst. "C-Cloverpaw, I-" Flutterleap began. "Save it. Don't you have a vigil to sit at, warrior?"Β
Flutterleap stood up helplessly and as she was treading slowly toward the entrance of camp, she saw Cloverpaw walk depressingly into the apprentice den while Robinpaw, Acornpaw, and Maplepaw were asking her questions, curiously.
Dear StarClan, what did Cloverpaw do to deserve this?
