Regina Jeffords
"Tony!" I yelled. The big black dog with blood red eyes spotted me.
Shit.
"TONY!" I found him lying a few feet away from the big pine tree. I sprinted towards him, and wasted no time in throwing him over my shoulder. I ran back as fast as I could with the satyr, and I heard a deep, angry growl right behind me.
I swerved to the left just in time and saw the hound scratching at the ground aggressively with it's razor sharp claws.
I slowly walked around the monster and ran towards the tree, and as I got closer, I coukd make out the silhouettes of people moving around. I sighed in relief, running faster, which was pretty hard with the extra weight of a whole ass person. He may look skinny, but that boy -or half boy- was not light.
I ran past the tree, finally, and a few campers saw us all dirty and smelly, and ran forward.
Just as I was about to lie there and sleep forever, I heard that goddamn growl and sighed in exasperation.
You're not gone yet?
I grabbed an arrow from a boy and almost laughed at his reaction. I turned, aimed at the dog, and before it could pounce, I threw the arrow with all my might and watched as it lodged itself in the monster's head. With a shrill scream, it turned to dust.
I spun around and saw the faces of the unfamiliar campers. I realized how exhausted I was once the adrenaline washed away. I caught the eye of Tony, smiled, and landed face first on the ground.
The last thing I remembered was the taste of dirt.
It did not taste good.
~~~
I woke up and immediately squinted as the glaring sun glared right at my fucking face. I groaned and slowly got up, propped up on my elbows and looked around. I was lying in a soft, fluffy bed with atleast 7 pillowsΒ surrounding me. My vision was a bit hazy, but I could still make put the green hills around me. Kids from 8 to 20 of age roamed around, playing volleyball or climbing some sort of a mountain which was pouring....was that lava?
"Thank the gods, you're awake." I heard a voice say.
"Tony!" I croaked.
I saw Tony walking towards me. He held a long glass filled with swirling liquid. He gave it to me.
"Drink this." He helped me up.
I drank the liquid through a pink straw, and immediately gagged.
"God, why the hell does this juice taste like roasted chicken?!" I screamed.
"It tastes like your favorite food." He sighed, rubbing his face. I noticed dark bags under his eyes and gave him a once-over. He had light, red scars littered on his arms, and his legs....Well, they were as furry as ever.
"I still can't believe you're a donkey."
"GOAT! I'm half goat. Donkeys hate us." He waved his arms around like a lunatic.
I held up my hands, "Okay."
He sighed again, "How are you feeling?"
"Peachy." I flexed my shoulders, trying to act cool. Inside, I was freaking out. What was that thing that attacked us? What is this place? Why is he half donkey?
The last question bothered me the most.
"Satyrs are real? And that monster...what's happening, Tony?" I could barely control the tremor in my voice.
He looked at me in the eye, as if he was gonna reveal a dark secret. He took a deep breath, exhaled, and grabbed my shoulders.
His eyes were wide when he said, "Chiron will explain."
"Who's Chiron?"
As if on cue, a horse came in, "Hello, Regina. I'm Chiron."
I stared at the talking horse/man, then at Tony, then at the horse, then back at Tony.
"Are you taking revenge on me for that egg incident? Because it was ann accident and I'm sor-"
"Child, I know it is all very strange, but let me explain." The horse, Chiron said.
I looked at Tony and he nodded. I took andeep breath, "Okay."
He smiled gently, "Tony here as told me you've learned about the Greek gods?"
I nodded, confused.
"Well, long story short, they are real. And the gods and goddesses still fall in love with mortals and have children. They are called demigods. Half God, half mortal. You, Regina Jeffords, are a demigod."
I almost fainted again, "You're saying....but they're myths!"
He sighed, "They're not, child. This must come as-"
He was interrupted as someone slammed the door open. A tall blonde girl ran in, and panted.
She held up a finger, breathing heavily. Once she recovered, she pointed a finger at him, "Chiron, can you knock some sense into Percy for me?"
Chiron sighed, shaking his head. "Regina, this is Annabeth Chase. Annabeth, Regina Jeffords, a new camper."
I finally got a good look at her and almost gasped. I'm not really good at describing human beings, unless of course I'm aggressively writing a fanfiction at 3:00 a.m, so all I could say was that she was gorgeous.
She smiled at me and stuck out her hand,
"Hey. Nice to meet you."
"You too." I shook it.
Chiron clapped his hands, and i jumped. "Dear, why don't you give Regina a tour?" She started to say something, and Chiron quickly added, I'll take care of Percy." She smiled at him and Tony, then turned her calculating grey eyes at me.
Finally, she said, "Come on. There's a lot to talk about."
~~~
I was speechless.
All those times I wished my life were like a book, all those prayers, has finally come true.
I was pretending to be the main character the whole time Annabeth was showing me around.
I was also gaping, so I probably looked like an idiot.
We were currently looking at the cabins, where apparently the children of each gods would live.
"And this is my cabin, Athena." Annabeth nodded at a grey cabin, which had a huge brass number 6 above the door. Inside were a lot of smart stuff, but what caught my eyes was the huge bookshelf at the far end of the room. I almost drooled at the sight.
"Wow, those books...." I trailed off.
She sighed dreamily, "Yeah."
We both stood like that for I don't know how long, and after what felt like forever, Annabeth turned to me.
"So, who's your godly parent? Is it your mom or dad?"
"My dad." My eyes widened. "My dad's a God!"
She chuckled, "It takes a while to get used to. So, it usually takes a little while for your parent to claim you as their child, but we'll know soon. We have campfire tonight. You'll know your dad then, I bet."
I stared at the ground, "Who do you think it is?"
She studied me, "Hmm. I'm just gonna ask a bunch of questions, and you answer them. Okay?"
"Okayyy." I dragged out.
"How good are you at stealing?"
I scoffed, "Very,very bad. I always get caught."
Annabeth frowned, "Okay...do you like building stuff?"
"I'm good at that in Legos, but hot really."
"Do you like drinking? Or grapes?"
"Uh.....no?"
"Oh! What about blood and...war?"
"Nah."
"Good at archery?"
"Not specifically archery. Have never tried that but I have pretty good aim."
She snapped her fingers, "Your dad might be Apollo."
"Apollo? Wow..." I frowned, "Are these the only traits of the demigod children?"
"Of course, not. These are usually what they have in common." She furrowed her eyebrows, "Sometimes."
"Apollo is my dad?"
"Could be. Not sure."
We both sighed.
I opened my mouth to ask more questions, when a boy who looked about 18 bounded towards us, yelling.
"HEY, WISE GIRL!"
"Dork." Annabeth muttered, but she had a soft smile on her face.
He stopped in front of us, "Chiron let me go with a warning."
"That's it?!" She yelled in disbelief. "That horse..."
Then he saw me, and I stopped breathing for a second.
Finnick Odair?
This was almost exactly how I pictured him to look like, atleast before the movies came, and I imagined him to be very handsome.
"Hi, I'm Percy Jackson."
I shook his hands and smiled, "Regina Jeffords."
"Heard you're a new camper. Welcome! Have you got claimed yet?"
I shook my head, "No. But Annabeth thinks I might be a daughter of Apollo."
She shrugged, "She's good at aiming. Again, not sure."
"Well, good luck. We might know who it is tonight. I gotta go, though. Sword fighting class. See you later!" He smiled at me, "Nice meeting you, Regina."
He then kissed Annabeth, and I almost fangirled out loud. They smiled at each other for a moment,Β as if they were the only people in the world.
Then Percy ran back the way he came from.
"You two are so cute!" I gushed.
Annabeth smiled wider, "Thanks."
"Who's his godly parent?"
"Poseidon. God of the sea."
I raised my eyebrows. "I could be his daughter, right?"
"I doubt that. Years ago, the big three gods, Zues, Poseidon and Hades made a pact that they wouldn't have any more demigod children since they're really powerful. Long story, but Poseidon only broke that promise once. Percy's the only demigod child of Poseidon."
I blinked, "Need some time to process that."
She laughed, "It's okay. Anyway, you'll be staying in the Hermes cabin until you get claimed."
She took me to the most crowded cabin and announced, "New undetermined camper, everyone!"
Two tall boys with mischievous grins came forward.
"Hi. I'm Travis, and this is Connor. Welcome to-" One boy started.
"-the Hermes cabin!" The other, Connor said, shaking his butt.
"Bro, let me do that atleast once!" The taller one argued.
"You did it last time!"
"Did not!"
Annabeth sighed and whispered to me as the continued bantering, "They are the head counselors of this cabin. Careful, almost everyone here pickpockets." She warned.
I didn't have anything valuable, so I guess I was good. I'm like, broke.
"Alright, I gotta go. But make yourself at home, Regina. Welcome to camp." Annabeth smiled at me one last time, before skipping back to to Cabin 3, and I watched as Percy beckoned her in, quickly shutting it.
Hmm...
"We arranged you a sleeping bag! If you want anything, feel free to ask." Travis grinned.
"Welcome," Connor spread his arms around wide, "To our humble abode."
~~~
The campfire was loud.
Everyone sat in a circle, and were singing songs about gods and sheep, and they even had a song mocking the gods.
I, of course, didn't know any of it, but I still tried to sing along. Everytime they yelled, I yelled. Everytime they stopped, I stopped. I just hope no one noticed.
Halfway through, I let my mind wander to my mom. On the last day of freshman year, my mom talked about something with Tony while I was enjoying my waffles. The next thing I knew, I was whisked of by my furry friend, fought a monster, found out I was half god, and drak liquid raosted chicken.
What a weird day.
I hoped my mom was okay. Hopefully, the monsters don't attack the family of the demigods too. She was the only family member I had. And even though I loved this, I was still afraid I wasn't gonna fit in. Maybe they were nice to the new kids, but soon, people like me were avoided, overlooked, bullied. I didn't want it to happen, I have enough experience.
The songs were over, and there was only the loud noise of people talking. Chiron stamped his hoove on the floor, silencing everyone.
"Good evening, Campers. I'd like to introduce Regina here, who has bravely fought a hellhound and saved the life of Tony."
Tony, Annabeth, Percy and a few of their friends smiled at me. The rest just stared.
Then, everyone gasped.
I was kinda warned about this beforehand. I immediately looked up, and was very confused when I saw the fading owl above my head.
What....
I caught the eye of Annabeth, wanting to know what this meant, but she looked as stunned as I felt.
"Isn't your mortal parent your mom?" A boy asked. Everyone started whispering among themselves.
Everyone stopped to bow down, as Chiron said, "Hail, Regina Jeffords,Β daughter of Athen, goddess of wisdom."
Whispers broke out again.
In the noise, I heard Chiron call my name, and we both walked in silence to the big house.
We were quiet, and I looked up, waiting for an answer.
"This might me possible. She's a goddess afte-"
"Chiron!"
Percy and Annabeth ran up to us. Her eyes were wide, and glinting.
"We figured it ou-"
"ATHENA LIKES GIRLS!" Percy yelled, laughing.
Annabeth joined him, "We are born from the divine thoughts of our mother,Β and the mortal ingenuity of our father, right? But it doesn't always have to be a man."
Chiron blinked, "That does make sense..." He scratched his beard.
"I have two moms..." I muttered.
What the hell?
"This camp keeps getting weirder and weirder." Percy chuckled.
"So...what now? I just move to cabin 6? It's so weird." This seemed like a very likely thing to get bullied about.
"Hey," Annabeth put her hand on my shoulder. "You're accepted here. No one's gonna be different around you. And even if someone is, we'll kick their asses." She pointed her thumb at her and Percy.
He nodded, grinning.
I slowly smiled, "Thanks, guys."
"You're welcome, sis."
And even if I just met these guys today, I think I really do trust them.
