Chapter 27
ย ย ย ย "Just go straight back to your dorm, and open your window." Skully's voice rang through my head as I walked as fast as I could through my campus, focused on moving as fast as I could. I managed to ignore the burning in my legs, as I kept my hands in the pocket of the large yellow hoodie.
I weaved around the students, ignoring any stares as I kept the hood up and my head angled down. I made my way into my dorm building successfully, trying to make it to my room as quietly as possible.
I nearly jumped out of my skin when an arm snaked its way across my shoulder. A head knocked gently against my own as I kept walking, the figure keeping pace. "I see you're back." The voice was recognizably Cameron's, relaxing me immensely. "What happened?" He whispered, and I held my breath before letting it out in a sigh.
"Long story."
"I've got time." He squeezed my shoulders, but I shook my head.
"I don't." I could feel his eyes on me as I pulled the hood farther over my head, taking a sharp turn into the hallway where my dorm room was located. Cameron followed with ease, and I pressed on my door's handle to find it unlocked. I pushed the door open, leaving him to deal with the door.
I didn't even acknowledge Katie and Carrie staring at me as I moved straight for the window. Opening up the pane, I looked out to find Skully sneaking their way over, managing to drag Hoody with them. They made eye contact with me, their eyes shifting to Cameron, who peered over my shoulder curiously.
"First aid kit." I commanded quietly, and I heard shuffling come from somewhere else in the room.
Katie set it down on my bed as she pulled Cameron away from me. "What happened?" She asked, her eyes full of questions, similar to her twin brother's.
"Long story." He said, mimicking my voice in a light way as he guided me from the window. He took my spot and began helping Hoody into the window and onto my bed. Skully made their way in here by themself with ease.
Hoody wheezed lightly as he was laid down on my bed, his black shirt carefully being removed by Skully and Cameron. The former grabbed the first aid kit, immediately getting to work.
I stared at Hoody's chest. I had seen it before, but it was almost as if I was seeing it for the first time again. It rose and fell, the little hairs still visible on his skin. My eyes trailed to the discolored skin in the center, the purples and greens faintly outlining a boot.
I got sight of a small circle on his forearm opposite of his soulmark. Moving myself to get a better look, my eyes widened. There was a bright, angry ring on the flesh, the color a dirty yellowish red color. It looked like a terrible burn, but I couldn't come up with anything that would've caused it. Then I remembered the faint cigarette smell and the several packs of cigarettes and lighters. It was a fucking cigarette burn/
"Shit, that's bad." I swore, snapping out of it as I immediately moved to go grab a bottle of cold water. I knew Katie and Cameron were confused by Skully, but neither mentioned it as they stood there, not knowing what to do. I brushed past them, sitting down next to Hoody's head. I pushed up the sleeves on the hoodie I was borrowing from him and placed a hand on his cheek opposite of me. "Can I get you to drink some water?"
His eyes were that liquid mercury that hid so much yet revealed so much at the same time. He looked hesitant, and I could only assume it was about potentially choking. "I'll help you sit him up." Cameron said, carefully placing his hands on Hoody's neck and upper back. "When I get him up, slide behind him, so he can rest against you."
I watched as Cameron carefully pulled him up, and once he was far enough up, I slid behind him. I placed my legs on either side of his waist and braced myself as he was slowly placed against my chest. Hoody groaned and panted with the effort as though it was straining him, and to be fair, it probably was.
His head pressed against mine once Cameron removed his hands. I felt the urge to dig my face into his neck and just cry, but I resisted. When both of us had finally gotten used to that position, Hoody rasped out a word. "Ready."
I reached around him, opening the water before bringing it up to his lips. I pressed the bottle to his lower lip and tilted it slightly. I let a little water fall into his mouth before holding the bottle straight again, allowing him to swallow. Repeating the process until about half of the water was gone, I ignored as the twins began to converse with Skully.
Capping the water, I placed it on my bedside table as carefully as I could without moving Hoody. When I moved my head back into place, I wrapped my arms tenderly around his chest. His nose nuzzled into my jaw, his breath tickling my skin the slightest bit.
"Thank you," he managed to say in a low voice. The sound wasn't as rough as it was earlier, which was a good sign in my book. I knew he was referring to Skully and me saving him, so I turned my head, my nose pressed against his.
His eyes were fluttered shut, his eyelashes dark on his pale skin. I let my eyes close as I responded. "It's only fair." Thin lips pressed against mine, making me freeze. In an instant, they were gone.
