closing the gate
"It's a two man operation. Two!" Hopper yells at Murray, Joyce and Asher who are following him. So, Hopper had planned it so only Murray and himself would go down to the Russian bunker, but Asher and Joyce had stubbornly decided that they were going with them.
"Yeah, well, change of plans" Joyce says to Hopper.
"Change of plans?" Hopper asks Joyce.
"Yeah" Joyce says before looking at Murray "Can you explain it to him please?"
"We have two options here, Jim" Murray starts to explain "We can turn the machine off, or we can explode it."
"Oh yeah, says who?" Jim says, not being happy that Asher and Joyce are going with them.
"Says the man who built it!" Murray yells.
"Yeah and we want to explode it" Asher adds on "Otherwise why the fuck are we going down there? 'Cause if we just turn it off, it'll turn right back on."
"This is a four man operation Jim, not two" Murray finishes off explaining to Hopper.
"Yeah, four. Look, I'm not happy about Asher being here either, but we need four people" Joyce agrees as they get to the elevator.
"Well, it was either me or Nancy" Asher says with a shrug "We're the only two who could actually help down here."
As they are in the elevator, Murray starts explaining the plan to them so everyone knows what they're doing. Basically, all Asher knows is that he is going with Murray, since Asher and Hopper are the only ones with the guns, and Asher is with Murray so if things so sideways in their end of the plan, Asher can cover for them while Murray is doing what he needs to do. Asher had to admit, it was a solid plan, but Hopper, on the other hand, didn't think the same.
"Uh..." Hopper says, not being so sure of the plan.
"Oh, God, just because it wasn't your plan doesn't mean it was a bad plan" Joyce says to Hopper.
"I didn't say it was a bad plan" Hopper argues back, like the two have been doing the whole time Asher has been around them.
"You made a noise" Joyce says with a shrug.
"I did not make a noise" Hopper argues back again.
"You did too" Joyce says to Hopper "I really think it's disrespectful--"
"What is up with you and your noises?" Hopper asks, cutting Joyce off.
"Children! Children!" Murray yells, making the two other adults stop arguing "It is a good plan. A solid B, which is laudable, given the situation and time constraints. Dare I say, if it all goes right... they'll never even know we're here" He says right before the elevator door opens, showing four Russian soldiers pointing guns at them, making Murray start yelling stuff at them in Russian.
"What are they saying?" Asher whispers to Hopper, not knowing a single word of Russian.
"Get back" Hopper whispers to Asher before he pushes Murray to one side, shooting all four of the guards until they were dead.
"Well, that was one way to deal with them" Asher says with a shrug
"Oh shit" Jim says with a sigh.
"Jim... This is crazy" Murray says, not being happy that Hopper went off from the plan "Jim, this... I had it under control."
"Yeah, sure you did" Jim says as he kneels down, taking a hat from one of the dead Russian guards, putting it on his head.
"What are you doing?" Joyce asks Hopper.
"I'm improvising" Hopper says.
After having to put on the commie uniform, which Asher was not happy about in the slightest, Joyce and Asher got into the back of the car while Hopper and Murray were in the front. To see them two would be more convincing then seeing a fifteen year old and a woman, so it was better for Asher and Joyce to be where no one could see them.
"You're really not happy about me being here, are you?" Asher asks Joyce as they're sat in the back of the car.
"You should be with the other kids where you're safe" Joyce says with a sigh "You shouldn't be here, it's dangerous."
"I'm not a kid" Asher says to Joyce.
"You are a kid" Joyce says to Asher "You've been through a lot, and no child should ever have to go through what you have, but you're still a child. You need to remember that you've still got your whole life ahead of you. That's why I'm not happy about you being here."
"I'll be fine" Asher says to Joyce "You don't got to worry about me."
"I will always worry about you, Asher" Joyce says to Asher with a smile "There are more people that care about you then you realise."
TIME SKIP BY JOYCE AND HOPPER ACTING LIKE PARENTS TO ASHER MORE THAN HIS ACTUAL DAD
The group had split off, with Asher and Murray going through the vents while Joyce and Hopper waited for their signal. The whole journey through the vents, Asher had been annoying Murray, being pretty bored, which Murray did not like at all; but Asher had to go with him for 'protection' as Hopper called it.
"Ash and Bald Eagle have landed" Asher says into his walkie talkie as him and Murray both climb out of the vent into some room. If Asher was being honest, he had no idea why the two were both in the room; all he knew was that if any Russian guards showed up, he had to shoot them with the gun. "What's that?" Asher asks Murray, who was unfolding pieces of paper.
"Can you stop asking questions?" Murray asks Asher, who just stays silent "Okay."
"Come on, how much longer?" They hear Hopper ask them.
"I don't know. I've never done this before!" Murray says very loudly into the walkie talkie.
"Maybe turn them the other way round?" Asher suggests, knowing that Murray was confused on what the drawing actually was.
"That's going to make no difference" Murray says, flipping the pieces of paper around anyways, to see that he's been holding it upside down the whole time "Oh, would you look at that" He says before turning around, finding all of the electricity controls "Okay! Okay! Kid, would you help me out here?"
"What do I do?" Asher asks as he walks over to the controls with Murray.
"Just pull them all out" Murray says to Asher before talking to Joyce and Hopper "Get ready, lovebirds, you're almost up to bat" He says right before him and Asher start pulling all of the wires out.
"Murray?" They hear Hopper say as they're pulling the wires out "Your goddamn code... is wrong."
"What? Are you sure?" Murray asks as he stops pulling the wires, making Asher stop too.
"Yeah, I'm sure" Asher hears Hopper say, not being impressed in the slightest.
"Well, I... I supposed it could be wrong" Murray says.
"How could it be wrong?" Hopper asks. If Asher knew any better, Hopper sounded like he could start crying at any second.
"The code is a number, a famous number" Murray explains "Planck's constant. I... I thought I knew it."
"Dustin might know it" Asher suggests, knowing that Dustin is one of the smartest people he's ever met "Ask that little shithead."
"I know Planck's constant" Murray says to Asher and Hopper.
"Well, obviously you don't if the code is fucking wrong" Asher argues back over Hopper's voice "Did you not ask him for the number or something?"
"Why would I need him to give me a number that I already know?" Murray asks Asher.
"Again, you obviously don't know it otherwise the code would be right!" Asher argues again with Murray.
As the three keep arguing with each other, the start to hear singing which makes them stop. If it was anyone else, Asher wouldn't be able to tell who it was, but as soon as he heard, he knew one of the voices was Dustin. "Why the fuck is he singing at a time like this?" Asher asks with a sigh, making Murray just shrug in response.
"Planck's constant is 6.62607004" Asher hears a voice that he's never heard before say.
"You just saved the world" Asher hears Dustin say to the stranger.
"Gosh, I miss you Dusty-bun" The girl says to Dustin.
"And I miss you more Suzie-poo" Dustin says, making Asher's eyes widen.
"She's real!" Asher shouts, scaring Murray "I'm sorry, man. I just thought he was lying about having a girlfriend. I'm so proud of that kid" He says as the two hear footsteps coming towards the room "Shit, I think we have company."
"The drawers" Murray points to the metal drawers next to the door "Push them in front of the door."
"I might need a little help with that" Asher mentions before the two run over to the drawers, pushing them in front of the door right before they hear banging on the door, making Asher aim the gun at the door, just in case they get in "What happens if they get in?" Asher asks Murray.
"Why is the one with the gun asking me that question?" Murray sarcastically asks Asher.
"I know what I'm going to do. My question is, what are you going to do?" Asher asks Murray with a scoff as Murray keeps messing around with all of the electrics "You got nothing."
"Obviously, I'm going to get the hell out of here" Murray says with a sigh "Just keep the gun pointed at the door."
For the next five minutes, Asher was stood, shaking, pointing the gun at the door. Not that he'd admit it to anyone, but at that moment, he was absolutely terrified. Not only was Russian soldiers trying to get into the room, but if they did get into the room, he had no idea what they'd do to him, and that scared him. But he had to get back to Max and Dustin. He wasn't going to leave them, and he wanted to make sure of that.
After a while, the banging on the door had stopped, and the two barley heard any noise coming from the other side of the door. "What's happened?" Asher asks Murray "Do you think they did it?"
"We'll go and find out" Murray says before him and Asher move the drawers away from the door "You go first. You're the one with the gun."
"I love how you put the child's safety over you're own, very heroic of you" Asher sarcastically says before opening the door, holding the gun tightly in his hands before walking out of the room, seeing no Russian guards in sight. The only person Murray and Asher could see was Joyce.
"Joyce! Joyce!" Asher shouts as the two run over to Joyce.
"Jim, where's Jim?" Murray asks so they could get Hopper and then get the hell out of there. As only silence came from Joyce, the two immediately knew what happened, so Asher pulled Joyce in for a hug, knowing that Hopper and Joyce were close.
"Guys, we got to go" Murray announces as Russian guards start running into the room "Now!"
TIME SKIP BY ASHER JUST ANNOYING MURRAY
After getting out of the Russian bunker, the three were taken to where everyone else was, and the first instinct Asher had was to make sure Max was okay. He needed to make sure that she was okay. "Max" Asher says as he runs over to Max, seeing a cut on her face, with her eyes being bloodshot and red "What happened? Are you okay?"
"Billy, he... he..." Max goes to say but starts crying, making Asher pull her into a hug "He's gone, Ash. Billy, he's gone."
"It's okay, I've got you" Asher whispers as Max cries into his chest "You're going to be okay."
Asher had never lost anyone in his life, so he didn't know how to react when Max told him that Billy was dead. All Asher knew was that he had to be there for the girl and that was what he was going to do.
