mitsuri could hear iguro screaming in his dorm room from where she was relaxing in her neighboring room. walls of dorm rooms in their college were thin, to her utmost chagrin.

she wondered what could be bothering him so much. knowing him, it was probably something trivial, but still... she'd never heard him react so violently to something before.

"what's wrong?"

she called out, knowing he would hear her through the walls.

there was no response, just more screaming and angry muttering.

hesitantly, mitsuri exited her dorm room and went over to obanai's dorm room door, knocking on it softly.

"go away!"

obanai hissed angrily, obviously not in the mood to interact with anyone.

mitsuri shrugged and turned around to go back to her room. if obanai didn't want to be bothered, she wouldn't bother him.

"...wait."

obanai sighed, sounding exasperated.

"come in."

mitsuri opened the dorm room door and cheerfully skipped in with a bright smile on her face.

obanai took one look at her and his pale cheeks immediately turned a soft pink.

kanroji mitsuri was well known for being one of the most beautiful women on the college campus, but obanai had never put too much stock into the rumors until now.

she had beautiful green eyes, the cutest and most genuine smile he had ever seen, and a cute hairstyle. her hair was dyed a very pleasant pink color with green highlights, and he could see from looking at her outfit that pink was her favorite color.

however, she wasn't wearing any pants.

she must've forgotten to change before coming to help him, as she was only dressed in a long white shirt with a pink teddy bear on it.

usually, obanai would feel uncomfortable with that, but since she had come to offer him help, he wasn't too worried about it. as long as she was comfortable, that was all he cared about.

"so, what's the problem?"

mitsuri asked enthusiastically, happy to help.

obanai handed mitsuri the worksheet he had been working on, wrinkled and torn from beingย  the target of his rage.

after smoothing the paper out as much as she could, mitsuri scanned it with her eyes, her lips pursed and eyebrows lowered in an expression of deep focus which obanai somehow found extremely attractive.

"hm. chemistry work, huh? i can help with that!"

she said after thoroughly examining the worksheet.

with mitsuri by his side, obanai successfully navigated the rocky ground that was chemistry, and managed to complete his worksheet effectively.

a/n: if i get my chemistry mixed up or don't explain it well, please do forgive me TwT, i took it last year as a class but i'm definitely not a professional chemist! i do think the subject is super cool though :)

"remember," she reminded him, "endothermic reactions involve taking kinetic energy, also known as heat energy, in and transforming it into chemical energy. exothermic reactions involve the substance releasing chemical energy; that energy then becomes kinetic energy! do you understand now?"

obanai stared at the unbreaking lines of text and equations and felt a headache coming on. he groaned angrily and faceplanted on his desk, feeling horribly embarrassed.

here was a gorgeous woman, one he felt quite attracted to, ready and willing to provide him with all the help he needed, and he was showing how much of an idiot he was.

mitsuri explained the topic as if it was so easy to understand, and she was always prepared to do an example problem to try and help him to understand. however, no matter what she did, he simply didn't understand.

he was hopeless. no wonder his teachers never tried to help him.

mitsuri was deeply concerned for obanai. he seemed so upset over a topic that was truly trivial.

who cared if he didn't understand thermodynamics? plenty of people didn't, and that didn't make them idiots in the slightest! chemistry was a challenging topic, it wasn't meant to be an easy thing to understand!

seeing someone beat themselves up over not understanding a topic that wasn't meant to be understood easily hurt mitsuri's heart.

she firmly believed- no, she knew- that anyone could understand a topic if they were taught by a teacher that was patient and willing to work hard to make sure their student truly knew the material.

mitsuri knew a lot about obanai's chemistry teacher. he was not a very patient or kind man. he was extremely intelligent, but he was not skilled when it came with dealing with less gifted students. he even went as far as to occasionally snap at his students and kick them out of the room when they made mistakes.

she remembered one day when she was studying in her biology classroom, which was across the hall from obanai's chemistry classroom. she heard yelling coming from outside, and went to find out what was happening.

a very embarrassed and angry obanai (his face was as red as a tomato) was standing in the open doorway of his chemistry classroom, screaming.

"how is it my fault that i don't understand the topic if you choose to ridicule me every time i ask you for help? calling me hopeless and the stupidest student you've ever taught won't help me understand anything you're teaching, will it?"

mitsuri's biology professor, who had been quietly doing work at her desk, stood up with a sigh and went over to close the classroom door.

"don't worry about your friend," she told mitsuri, noticing that the pink haired girl was concerned.

"is his professor always like that?" mitsuri asked.

her biology professor nodded, sadness in her eyes.

"we all tell him to be gentler, but he never listens," she said, sighing once again.

poor obanai... he may not be smart, but he always tries his best from what i've heard of him. his professor doesn't have the right to treat him like that!

mitsuri thought, watching through the window in the classroom door as obanai sadly skulked down the hallway, obviously deeply hurt and upset by the way his professor was treating him.

looking at him now, upset and defeated, reminded her of that time so long ago. and she wouldn't let that happen to him again!

"iguro obanai, get your head off of that desk and start working!"

she exclaimed, but there was no rage in her words at all. quite the opposite, actually. she was trying to encourage obanai, to get him to work through the confusion and hard times to reach an understanding of the topic.

"you sound like my professor," he muttered.

but, nevertheless, he lifted his head up and, after a few more practice problems and mitsuri explaining things to him, he was successfully able to complete an equation by himself.

"yes! you did it! that's the first step to mastery!"

mitsuri was beaming from ear to ear, leaping up and down with joy. she was so proud of obanai! he finally seemed to understand the topic!

after rushing through the following equations, obanai showed his paper to mitsuri, who looked it over to see if there were any mistakes.

when she looked at obanai with a shocked expression on her face, he cursed loudly, thinking he had made mistakes and that was why she was shocked.

he didn't expect her to place the paper back on the table and cry out, "everything's right! it's all perfect!"

obanai could feel tears forming in his eyes, and he quickly looked away from mitsuri, not wanting her to see him cry.

he finally managed to understand a chemistry topic! granted, it was mostly through mitsuri's help, but still!

that would show that loser professor he had that he could actually do it! he couldn't wait to hand in the paper tomorrow and watch his professors' ugly eyes bug out when he saw the perfect score obanai had gotten!

as he was rejoicing, he felt the soft touch of lips on his cheek, and turned around to suddenly be face to face with mitsuri.

"mitsuri..."

he whispered, speechless.

was this really happening? was the woman he was attracted to really returning his affections?

first he got a perfect score on a chemistry assignment then a kiss from his dream girl?

this had to be a dream...

"i'm so proud of you," she whispered lovingly before leaving the dorm room.

obanai sat at his desk with his mouth wide open in an o shape, pressing his hand to the spot on his cheek where mitsuri's lips had touched.

he was in a daze, feeling as if butterflies were flying in his heart, their wings fluttering in his chest.

he had just wanted to learn about chemistry, but he had discovered a second kind of chemistry between him and mitsuri.

and honestly, he preferred that chemistry more.

a/n: my lack of talent in writing endings is really showing here :( however, despite the bad ending, i actually think that this oneshot is pretty good! i hope you like it too :)

as always, i hope you have a lovely day/night! thank you for supporting my oneshots, i love you lots <3
