73. Blending Together
"Thank you for meeting up with me." I don't look at him, I just clench my jaw angrily. "Seriously, Seth, thank you."
"I didn't do it for you, Liam. I did it for him." I nod my head at Jamie as he runs around with a few other kids on the playground. He hasn't seen his father yet, he's been too preoccupied.
"I've missed him so much." His voice is sad, full of longing, and a part of me feels bad even though I know I should feel anything but bad for him. He and Rae had their divorce finalized a month ago, in August. He hasn't seen Jamie since they'd moved back to Massachusetts, which was also about a month ago.
I'd gotten a bigger place, one that had enough space for the three of us. It's a home right outside of Boston and it's beautiful. We'd enrolled Jamie in one of the best private schools around and he'd seemed to be enjoying it. I'd made sure he wanted for nothing because even though he wasn't mine, I treated him as such.
The one thing he did ask about frequently was his father. Because even though I treated him like he was mine the reality was he wasn't. Whether I liked him or not didn't change the fact that Liam is Jamie's father. This is why we're where we are now.
Liam had reached out to me specifically. He'd apologized for what he'd had done to me and he'd begged me to help him with Jamie. Rae is angry with him and I don't blame her for being so. The end of the divorce had gotten rather nasty and there was some serious bad blood between the two of them now.
After he'd bitten back, trying to take custody of Jamie, she'd had to drudge through every bad thing Liam had done throughout their entire marriage. She'd sat with a private investigator learning that his secretary wasn't his first affair. All of those business trips to Vegas she learned weren't just business trips. Yes, he may have gone on them but he was also mixing a hell of a lot of pleasure with his business.
So, what seriously sucks for Liam now is that when Rae is angry she's also extremely stubborn. She didn't want anything to do with Liam and I didn't blame her. Some of the pictures of him sleeping with other women and getting his dick sucked by random females was a bit much for even me.
I'd been there with her when she'd gone through them and let's just say, no one wants to see visual evidence of their spouse with someone else sexually. I doubt Liam would want to see pictures of my face between Rae's legs. That's when a thought occurs to me – maybe he had.
Before I let myself linger on that for too long I look over my shoulder. I eye a woman a few paces away. She's got hair that reminds me of Rae but she's a bit more voluptuous. Now that we hadn't agreed on. I can't believe he'd actually brought her here.
"I didn't agree to you bringing her here." I nod back to the woman. "Is that her?"
"What are you talking about?" I roll my eyes because he knows exactly what I'm talking about.
"The secretary you were fucking behind Rae's back. Is that her?" He pursed his lips and then nods his head yes. "Yeah, I thought I'd recognized her. She's got a lot more clothes on now than when I'd seen her." He just glares at me and I shrug. "We didn't agree to her being here, Liam."
"She's not going to come over or anything." He grits out, clearly angry for me making stipulations for him to see his son.
I let out a long, irritated sigh and say, "if Rae finds out about this she's going to royally rip me a new one, you do realize that, right? And that's without the secretary you were banging here. Well, it appears you're currently banging her still."
"Sasha, her name is Sasha, Seth. Her and I have gotten a lot more serious in the past few months."
"I mean, you guys seemed pretty fucking close before; literally." He doesn't say anything to that because I know he'd seen the pictures in court. I'd seen his face fall but luckily, he didn't parade any pictures of my naked ass around the court room.
"We'll be moving here soon enough."
"What?" I feel my brows furrow.
"Sasha and I are moving to Boston. We're looking at places while we're here." I don't like the sound of that one bit. "I can tell you're not thrilled."
"Fucking obviously, Liam. You think I want the guy who paid to have me beaten up moving back to town?"
"I told you I'm sorry about that." I roll my eyes at him again. "Well, we're going to need to learn how to get along for Jamie's sake if nothing else."
Before I can say anything to that I hear Jamie's voice excitedly yell, "Daddy!" He's running toward Liam and Liam's eyes prick with tears as he catches his son in his arms.
"Jamie!" He clutches his small body to him, giving him a giant hug and even though I hate to admit it to myself, Liam is right. We're going to have to learn how to get along, all of us. I don't exactly know how we're going to do that but we're going to have to figure it out.

I'm helping Rae set the table for the dinner we're having tonight. It's going to be awkward, that's putting it lightly. I can tell it's causing Rae to have a minor panic attack, even if she doesn't want to admit that fact. She's been nearly hyperventilating all day.
"I can't believe you convinced me to do this." She mumbled out from across the table. "I can't believe we're having Liam and that fucking-"
"Her name is Sasha." Rae looks up and glares at me. "Hey, I know it's weird but we're doing this for Jamie, Rae. And trust me, I doubt Liam wants to sit down with us and have dinner either."
"It's weird, Seth. It's really fucking weird and to have her here in my house-"
"Our house." I interrupt her. "Our home is the one your ex-husband is coming to, to have dinner. I think he likes that idea a lot less because the two of you are with me. So, let's just keep it in perspective and try to keep it civil for the little man.
"Fine, but if this night goes to shit it's on you."
"If it does then yes, it's on me." She glares at me one more time before leaving the room.

Dinner had gone about as well as could be expected with a recently divorced couple and their spouses. We'd made small talk over our meal for Jamie's sake. Sasha seemed nice enough, her and Rae actually got along. They talked about art because apparently Sasha liked to draw too. Apparently, Liam had a type; artistic fiery red-head. At least that's what most of the photos had shown as well, but I digress.
While the both of them chatted about the use of different media, Liam had even tried to make conversation with me. He'd brought up hockey. He was even knowledgeable about the topic, to my complete surprise. He'd talked about 'the perfection line', as they're called, naming off their stats and so forth.
It was awkward, but looking over at a smiling Jamie digging into his mashed potatoes happily made it worth it. I don't know what I would've done if my parents got divorced. But their marriage was much different than what Rae and Liam had had. No, my parents were in absolute love with each other until the day my mother left this earth. Even still, my father wouldn't marry Katie because he said there was only one wife for him in this lifetime. Luckily, Katie understood that.
Currently, Rae is loading the dishwasher. You can tell she isn't thrilled because Jamie had asked to spend the night at his father's place. She'd hesitantly let him, extremely hesitantly, but now that he had a place in the city she'd let him. Liam had scheduled visits but this was Jamie's first sleep over with him.
"It's going to be alright, Rae." I give her a kiss on the back of her neck and then place my hands there, kneading out the tension beneath the skin.
"I know he's been here for a month but still. I'm nervous, Seth."
"I get it." I knead her shoulders a bit more, "but it's going to be alright. This is what's best for Jamie. He needs both of his parents, even if one of them is a pretentious dick." That makes her let out a laugh. "He wants to be a part of Jamie's life, that's a lot more than a lot of other pretentious dick dads can say."
"Pretentious dick dads." She snorts out a laugh and shakes her head. "Only you would say something like that."
"Well, he is."
"Yeah, he really is." She turns in my arms and looks up at me. "You've been really great with this whole thing, Seth. I just wanted to say thank you for continuously supporting me throughout this divorce, helping me with Jamie, even dealing with Liam. I know it's a lot. I just want you to know how much I love you."
"And I love you." And that's all there is to it.
