Season One : Episode Two, Let Go

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

After a couple hours into their 24 hour shift, the 118 were called in by dispatch when there was a malfunction on a roller coaster ride.

Sadly one passenger was thrown off landing very hard on the ground, and another civilian was hanging off the cart.

On the ground Hen and Chim aided to the young man, while Buck, Bobby and Becca were walking up the ladder truck.

"Buck, we came in at the wrong angle. I'm gonna have you climb up there, harness him in, and hang tight while we move the truck." Bobby explained

"Okay." Buck nodded

"You think you can handle that soldier?" Becca questioned, as Buck smiled.

"Hell yeah. This daredevil hero stuff is what I signed up for, guys!" Buck Said

"Good." Bobby Said

He and Becca grabbed the equipment quickly as they were working on the clock here, with the frantic and terrified people trapped on the cart still. And the many news vans filming the entire ordeal.

Buck was not harnessed up, Bobby and Becca climbed down as the ladder reached closer to the rollercoaster track.

"Help us! Please!" One of the girls, cried out.

"Everybody, try to stay calm. We'll get you down, I
promise, all right? I need you to relax, I need you to breathe, and I need you to keep as still as possible." Buck Shouted

He climbed off the ladder and carefully climbed onto the coaster track. On the ladder truck, Bobby and Becca looked on, her nerves were a little high as she watched Buck, so high up.

"You move less, you stay safe. We get everyone off this ride safe." He looked over to the man, who's hanging from the cart, "Hey, what's your name, man?" Buck Asked, trying to keep them calm.

"Devon." He Said, panting.

"All right, Devon. Well, hang on, brother." Buck Said

"Where's Chad? What happened to Chad?!" Devon Asked

"Hey, guys, he's asking about his friend." Buck Said, speaking into his radio.

Becca and Bobby shared a look, she then held up her radio and spoke up.

"Chimney, it's Becca, you copy?" She Asked, as Chimney and Hen are still checking on Chad.

"Copy, Becca. What do you need?" Chim Said

"How's the kid on the ground?" Becca Asked

Hen checks for a pulse and sighs, she stands to her feet shaking her head. "He's gone."

"We lost him." Chimney replied into the radio

"Damn it." Becca sighed, as Bobby spoke into the radio.

"All right, I don't need the people up there seeing that. So, do me a favor...he survived, right?
Get him on a gurney. You know the drill." Bobby Said

"Copy that." Chimney Said

Becca looked over her shoulder and saw from a few feet away, as Hen and Chim placed the deceased young man on the gurney.

Soon the crowd in the amusement park got larger, and people started taking out their phones to film the scene that's unfolding. Buck was now climbing up on the tracks towards the cart filled with the civilians.

"Hang in there, guys. we're coming, I'm almost there." Buck reassured

"What happened to Chad?!" He frantically cried out, "He's dead, isn't he?!" Devon Asked

Buck finally made it towards them, "Hey, Devon, look at me. Chad...he's getting help. You see?
He's gonna be fine, and I'm not gonna let anything
happen to you, all right?"

"Uh huh." Devon Said, while trying not to look down.

"Is everyone okay?" Buck Asked

"No, we're not okay!" A girl cried out

"Why is the fire truck going away?" Her friend asked, confused.

"It's just getting into a better position, that's all." He explained, "Devon, how we doing?" Buck Asked, adjusting the clasps of the harness so he could help rescue everyone safely.

"It's gonna be everywhere." He looked down at the crowd, "It's gonna be all over the place." Devon panicked

"Hey. Forget about them, okay? You don't look down, you look up at me. You see this strap here?
All you got to do is reach up your arm, slide it through the loop." Buck explained

"I can't!" Devon Shouted

"Yes, you can." Buck reassured

"I can't!" Devon replied

"Yes, you can, buddy. You can do it." Buck Said

Down below the crowd was getting even bigger, Hen, Chim, Bobby and Becca looked up above hoping he can successfully get him down safely.

"Come on, Buck. Come on, Buck." Chimney Said

"Can you tell them to stop recording, please?" He started crying, "I don't want everyone to see me like this." Devon sobbed

"Listen, Devon, I need you to concentrate." Buck Said

"Please!" Devon said, as he continued whimpering.

"Listen slide your arm through the loop...and then we can deal with everything else." He slides down a little, extending his hand out, "All right. Hey. Reach up your hand. Come on. It's, like, three inches.
You can do this. I got you." Buck Said

"I can't." Devon Said

"Devon. Devon, I need you to trust me. Give me your hand, I will not let you go." Buck pleaded

"...I can't." Devon Said

"Devon. Devon, please." Buck Said

Before he could grab him it was already too late, Devon had let go of the cart leaving Buck and everyone else to watch him fall to his death, hitting the ground really hard leaving everyone gasping in shock.

"Oh my.." Becca said

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

The next morning, Buck sat at the table staring at a half empty coffee cup in his own thoughts. Becca was in the kitchen assisting Bobby and Chim with the food, she would casually glance over at Buck who was clearly upset about what happened on the last call.

Being that it's his first time losing a person on a call, she and everyone can sympathize with him being that, she's been there herself once or twice. Chimney placed a plate of food in front oh him, he shook his head.

"I'm not hungry." Buck Said

"This is America, Buckaroo. Eating has nothing to
do with being hungry." Chimney Said

"Man, I was right there. You know, all he had to do was reach up and grab my hand." Buck Said

"People do funny things at times like that." She made her way over to the table, "Sometimes they just freeze up." Becca Said, placing her plate down on the table.

"I've never lost anyone before, does it get any easier?" Buck Asked, looking up at his colleagues who shared looks.

"No." Bobby Said without any hesitation

"Look, people die, and that's part of the gig, right?
See, your problem is, you're looking at every job
like it's a long-term relationship. They're one-night stands, man. In that moment, they mean everything to you, but once the morning comes...it's on to the next one." Chimney Said, as Becca raised a brow at him.

"Y'know there's tons of analogy's out there, yet you had to use that one Chim." Becca Said, as Chim smirked.

"Hey, you guys don't mind, I brought some company to family dinner. Athena's going through some,
uh, some stuff at home, so she could use some TLC." Hen Said, as she and Athena made their way towards the table, Chim got up and hugged the sergeant.

"Well, we don't usually allow cops at secret firehouse meetings, but, uh, I'll make an exception." Bobby Said, giving Athena a quick side hug.

"Mm. All right. Appreciate that." Athena Said

"Hey Athena." Becca Said, as the two of them shared a hug.

"Hey Becca, how's everything and what about your trio" Athena Asked, smiling.

"Everything's good, oh and as for the trio..it's only one word to describe them..trouble," She and Athena laughed, "I'm kidding, their all right. What about May and Harry?" Becca Said

"Good, everyone's fine, " She looked at Buck, "
Oh. Well. You know, I ain't sold on you yet, but...
I think keeping me from getting shot deserves a second chance." She lended out her hand, which Buck surprising shook, "Hey, there won't be a third, though." Athena Said, as they all laughed.

"Buck here is having a little trouble moving on from a call that didn't go his way." Bobby Said

"Oh. You know why they make us wear these uniforms, right? Cops, firefighters, paramedics?" Athena questioned, as she sat down.

"Uh...sex appeal?" Chimney piped up, as Hen and Becca chuckled.

"So people can easily identify us." Buck answered

"Both true, but it's also for our own good. Because when we take the uniform off at the end of the day,
it symbolizes letting go of all of the sad, crazy, inhumane things we've seen that day." Athena explained

"I see his face every time I close my eyes. That happen to you guys?" Buck Asked, as his crew members shared looks.

"It'll pass." Athena spoke up

As they were about to dig in to their food, the fire alarm went off and they groaned.

"Oh, come on." Chimney Said

"Every time." Becca groaned, shoving some food into her mouth.

"Game over." Hen Said

Everyone got up from their seats as Buck remained seated, his captain looked at him as he noticed Buck was still sitting.

"You coming, kid?" Bobby Asked

"Yeah." Buck Said, as he got up following behind his team.

They got another call in about a bushfire that spread across a field, while most of the team was all over hosing down the last bit of the fire. As she got out the fire, Becca walked back towards the fire engine and she saw Buck smiling while on the phone with someone.

"Hey Buckley, is that actually a smile I see..haven't seen one of those on your face since seven hours ago." Becca teased

"Ha ha." Buck Said lamely

"Sorry I was only teasing, so..who was that..the person you were on the phone with?" Becca Asked, putting the hose back.

"Oh uh, it was..just a friend." Buck replied

"Must have been some friend, your even blushing a little." Becca Said, pointing to his cheeks.

"What no, I wasn't blushing.." Buck Said, as Becca held her hands up in defeat.

"If you say so Buck." Becca Said

As Becca walked to go help more of the crew members, Buck looked hesitant to say something but stopped her.

"Hey uh, Becca." Buck Said

Becca stopped and turned to face him, "Yeah?"

"Are you busy tomorrow evening?" Buck Asked

"Uh, No. it's just me and my kids why?" Becca questioned

"Would you-never mind you don't." Buck Said, looking down at the ground.

"What is it Evan?" She Asked, he looked up at her, "Look whatever it is you need, name it." Becca Said

"Would like to come with me to Devon's service, his family is having his service tomorrow at 11..I really would appreciate it if someone come with me?" Buck Asked

Becca was taken back a bit, as she never would have expected him to ask her to go with him to something like this. But she thought, it's his first lost on the job and he could really use someone there for him.

"Like I said you don't have to, I completely understand-" Buck Said, as Becca shook her head.

"No Buck," She interrupted, "Of course I'll go with you, what are friends for right" Becca Said, as he returned a weak one back to her.

"Thank you." Buck Said

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

After their shifts were over everyone soon returned home, Becca was currently in the living room watching a movie with Dylan and Bryan, on the Tv screen it showed the movie Thor Ragnarok.

"Man Chris Hemsworth is one good looking man." Becca Said, as her two sons look at her. "What he is."

"So the only reason you wanted to watch this with us, so you could drool over Thor?" Dylan Asked, as Becca shook her head.

"No, I wanted to watch Thor because..it was a great movie. Besides I took you guys to the opening premiere, and I enjoyed myself." Becca Said, shoving some popcorn in her mouth.

"Yeah especially when he took his shirt off." Dylan chimed in

"Wait he took his shirt off?" Becca questioned, as Bryan and Dylan bursted into laughter.

"Got you." Dylan Said

"Ha-ha, jokes on you that's the one scene minus the ending from the movie that I truly remember." Becca Said

"Would you guys simmer down, I'm trying to finish my math homework." Aryana chimed in, from over in the kitchen.

"Sorry sweetie." Becca Said

"I don't know why she just won't do her homework in her room." Bryan Said

"I can't, the guy from next door is working out in his backyard and he's doing his stupid kickboxing routine." She explained, "So, I rather do it down here." Aryana Said

"Do you need help with your homework, I can help you?" Becca offered

"Please our homework is so easy." Bryan piped up, as Becca looked at him.

"Oh yeah if it's so easy, how come I haven't seen you do it since you've come home from school?" Becca mentioned, as Bryan looked lost for words.

"Uh yo-you see.." Bryan Said, stumbling on his words.

"Uh huh." Becca Said, as Bryan sighed.

"Fine, I'll go start my homework." Bryan Said

"Yeah you should do that." Becca Said, as Bryan stood up from the couch.

"Stupid homework." Bryan mumbles, walking up the stairs.

"What was that?" Becca Asked

"Nothing." Bryan replied, from upstairs.

Becca got up as well and walked over to the table where Aryana is, "Okay, what do you need help with my little third grader?"

"Okay so this month my teacher, Mrs.Briggs she's teaching us multiplication and division..I can admit a little harder than adding." Aryana Said, as Becca chuckles.

"It's okay baby, math can be difficult at times for some people. But with practice makes perfect right, so what's the equation?" Becca Asked, looking down at the paper.

"We're so supposed to figure out what is divided by what to give you that, and what multiply's what to give that. So what's 25 x __ = 50 mom?" Aryana Asked

Bryan and Aryana looked up at Becca as she tried to quickly do the math in her head, now math wasn't always her best subject growing up. She preferred gym, science or history but sometimes math would manage to become her great friend instead of moral enemy.

"Oh it's 2." Becca simply said

"That was fast." Dylan replied

"What how?" Aryana Asked

"Oh I remembered factor pairs," Aryana still looked confused, "Don't worry I'll explain it to you." Becca Said

Before she sat down there was a knock at the door, she got up from the kitchen area and walked towards the front door, looking through the peep hole only to see two faces she wasn't expecting to see.

"Mom, Dad?" Becca Said, as she opened the door.

"Rebecca!" Joyce and Danny Said

"Rebecca sweetie," She embraced her in a hug, "Nice to see you." Joyce Said

"Nice to see you too, hey Dad." Becca Said, as her father hugged her.

"Hey, so where's my favorite three!" Danny Said

"Grandma and Grandpa!" Aryana, Bryan and Dylan said in unison, as they hugged them tightly.

"Wait when did you guys get here?" Becca Asked

"Oh you know we just thought it was time to get out the house and go and visit the kids, it's been a while." Joyce Said

"Mom we came to visit you guys in November, which was like two months ago." Becca said

"Yeah but there's never an excuse for a grandmother to not go and visit her only Nietos y nieta." Joyce Said

"And grandfather, who also brought some gifts along the way. Don't worry it's the gifts that I forgot to send over Christmas." Danny Said

Danny rolled his suitcase into the living room as Bryan and Dylan followed behind him, Aryana looked at Becca.

"Mom can I take a break from homework, please?" Aryana clasped her hands together, pleading.

"Go on, but we will finish this homework." Becca Said

"Yeah, yeah." Aryana Said, running over towards her grandfather who was giving them their gifts.

"Oh hun, you have a little?" She licked her finger, and rubbed dirt off Becca's forehead, "There you go." Joyce Said

"Thanks mom, I thought I had got all that dirt off me." Becca Said, rubbing her forehead with her forearm.

"Let me guess there was a fire today on the job." Joyce Said

"Yep, but it wasn't anything too big luckily we got to it in time." Becca Said

"Hm." Joyce Said

Becca looked down at the suitcase near the door, and back up at her mother.

"So how long are you and dad going to be staying?" Becca Asked

"Three maybe four days, you know we can't leave your sister alone too long for all we know she might throw a party while we're gone." Joyce Said

"Come on Mom, Yelena's sixteen there expected to do something like that." Becca pointed out.

"Who said it was her, I was talking about Lydia." Joyce raised a brow, as Becca couldn't help but smirk.

Becca being the oldest out of her three younger sisters, Everly the ambitious second oldest, Lydia the carefree middle child and Yelena being the baby girl.
But growing up Becca and Lydia, always were the ones getting into trouble especially with their parents.

"How is it now that Lydia's back living with you guys?" Becca Asked, curious.

"Oh you know it's like she never even left." Joyce Said, half smiling.

"That's our Lydia." Becca Said

"Yup, so what's on the menu for dinner?" Joyce Asked, walking into the kitchen.

"Uh..I actually don't know what to cook for tonight, maybe some leftover spaghetti I made three days ago." Becca Said

"Now Mija, leftovers after three days ago isn't good you know the rules." Joyce Said, then she takes out a pen and scribbles down on a paper.

"What are you doing?" Becca Asked

"It's a list of groceries I need to you to go pick up from the supermarket, so I could whip you guys something up." Joyce said, handing Becca over the list.

"So you're going to cook tonight?" Becca questioned

"Yeah I mean you weren't, and besides I'm starving and I know those kids are too." Joyce Said

Becca sighed and looked at the list reading it, instantly knowing what her mother was cooking for tonight.

"Well it looks like we're having Empanadas tonight." Becca Said

"With Tomato-Garlic Spanish Rice." Joyce added, as Becca nodded.

"Great." Becca Said

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

The next morning Becca was sitting at the kitchen table with her dad, catching up as they drunk some coffee together.

"So dad, how's everything at the sheriff's department back in El Paso?" Becca Asked

"Oh you know, same old same old, you remember Ms.Gutierrez from down the street?" Danny Asked

"Mhm." Becca Said

"Well about two weeks ago, we just had to arrest her nephew, because he was selling drugs from her basement." Danny Said, as Becca's eyes widen.

"Juan was selling drugs?", Danny nodded, "I mean I'm not surprised he tried selling me drugs one time back in 10th grade, relax it was only marijuana." Becca Said

"Anyways he's going to be facing a lot of time, damn kid made me chase him for five blocks." Danny Said, rubbing his knee.

"Dad your 52, you gotta be careful." Becca Said

"What do you think I've been saying for the last thirty years, morning hun." Joyce Said, as she kissed Danny.

"Morning babe." Danny Said

"Hey Mom, there's coffee if you want." Becca Said

"Mm thank you, I need this to wake up..after almost nine hours of sleep." Joyce Said, as poured her herself a cup of coffee.

"Yeah why didn't you wake us up this morning?" Danny Asked

"Oh I just wanted to let you guys get some extra rest, after a two hour flight. And Dad seemed really tired at dinner last night." Becca Said

"Well I was, and thank you." Danny Said

"So how was everything this morning with the kids?" Joyce Asked, sitting down.

"It was uh..okay, I mean I have some good morning and bad mornings especially if I'm working. But it can be stressful, but I got them out of here." She sighed, "Now I understand how stressful it was getting us ready for school in the morning, I don't know how you guys did it." Becca Said

"Because we were a team, against the four of you." Danny Said, as Becca smiles.

"He's right, you know sometimes it's better to work as a team than by yourself." Joyce Said, as Danny looked at her.

"But, there's nothing wrong with being on team by yourself." Danny replied, as Joyce shook her head.

"Sure, for some people." Joyce Said

"Joyce don't.." Danny Said

"What?" Becca Said

"Honey your father and I would like to talk to you about something." Joyce Said

"Okay..what?" Becca Said

"For the past few months your father and I have been in discussions about you and the kids, and we we're thinking..that maybe it's best if you guys should come back home." Joyce Said, as Becca furrowed her brows.

"Back home what to El Paso?" Becca questioned

"Yeah, I mean there's many fire departments in the El Paso area. And you'd be closer to us, where you can have more help." Joyce Said

"More help, mom I don't need any help I'm fine." Becca argued

"Mija your not fine, come on your barely hanging on.
Every time me or your father call you seemed exhausted." Joyce Pointed out

"Yeah cause I work 24 hour shifts that comes with the job." Becca Said

"The job that you chose and you know would be too difficult at times." Joyce Said

"So what are you saying that I can't be a firefighter and a mother?" Becca questioned

"No Becca that's not what she's saying." Danny chimed in

"What I'm saying is that you can't do it alone, you need help Becca, clearly the kids father isn't here to help." Joyce mentions

"Justin is overseas I told you guys that, he'll be home soon." Becca sighed, in annoyance.

"Sure he'll be home from the army, for what like two or three months then he's back to work for god knows how long." Joyce Said

"Okay, Joyce I think that's enough." Danny Said

"No Danny, he's never there for his kids...it's always work before the kids." Joyce Said

"Joyce!" Danny Said

"No Dad it's okay, I'm not surprised this is just mom being mom right. Always thinking she knows what's best for everyone, we'll let me tell you something, you have no right to come in my house and tell me what's best for me and my kids, I'm the only person that knows...me." Becca Said

She got up from the table and left the room, Joyce following behind her.

"Rebecca Martinez, we're not done with this conversation." Joyce Said

"Yeah we are, cause I have somewhere to be." Becca Said, walking up the stairs.

"Where?" Joyce Asked

"A memorial!" Becca Said, as she slammed her door behind her.

When the tension in the house settled, Becca took this time to get ready for the memorial service. Doing a simple makeup look, and put on one out of the four black dresses she had in her closet.

Paring it with black her criss cross ankle strapped wedges, and curling some of the loose waves in her hair. Soon Buck had arrived to pick her up from her house, and they drove to the service.

Inside the chapel Becca and Buck sat all the way in the back, she looked around the room at the people who came to show up for Devon's service.

She then looked over at a clearly nervous Buck, who was fidgeting with his feet. Becca placed her hand over his knee, Buck looked down at her hand.

"No need to be nervous okay, just breathe.." Buck nodded, and exhaled, "There you go." Becca Said

Soon a woman came upon the small stage, to speak into the microphone on the podium it was Devon's sister, she went on about her brother and soon her speech came to an end.

"My Brother was a man of great potential. That's the hardest part for me, thank you all for coming." She Said, sniffing.

Buck and Becca sat down for a bit as they watched everyone rise from their feet, to speak with Devon's grieving sister.

"If your still nervous to go and speak to his sister, you can sit here for a couple more minutes, whenever you're ready." Becca Said

Buck nodded at her then looked across the room at Devon's picture, and at his sister.

"No, it's okay..I'm ready." Buck Said

"Okay." Becca softly said

She got up first and walked out the pew, as Buck was right behind her. They stopped in the aisle way, as Devon's sister spotted them and approached the two.

"Hello." She greeted

"Hi, I'm Buck, uh Evan and this is my friend Rebecca." He greeted back

"First we just wanted to say on the behalf of the 118 how sorry we are for your lost of your brother." Becca Said, with a sympathetic look.

"Thank you." She Said

"I'm truly sorry I never wanted that to happen, " He stammered out, "it's only my fourth month on the job, I've never lost anyone before this." Buck Said

"What really happened up there?" She Asked, as Becca and Buck shared a look.

"It was like he just...he gave up." Buck simply said, as his sister scrunched up her face in disbelief.

"Are you saying it's my brothers fault he's dead?" She questioned, as Buck shook his head no.

"No, that's not what I mean." Buck Said

"My brother was very happy to be alive, he was loved and he knew it. He wanted to live, and you failed him.." She Said, in distraught, leaving Buck lost for words.

Having nothing left to say to the two of them after the assumptions from her deceased brother, she walked away upset. Becca looked behind her as she saw Buck was walking towards the door, she quickly speed walked to catch up with him.

"Buck, Buck wait, don't do this." Becca Said

"Do what?" Buck Asked, walking towards his jeep.

"Continue to blame yourself, " She tugged on his arm, so he could face her, "I've been where you are right now, and I'm going to be honest it sucks, it fucking sucks." Becca Said

"He could have grabbed my hand Becca, that's all he had to do.." Buck Said, as Becca looked at him sadly.

"I know, I know you wanted him to believe in himself..but sadly Devon didn't. And it was too late, sometimes...we can't save those who don't want to be saved." Becca Said

Buck looked at her after she said that, and let that sink in his head. And leaned against his jeep, rubbing his head in frustration.

"I know..I just wish it doesn't have to suck." Buck Said

Becca nodded and leaned against his Jeep, "Yeah me too, but hey it comes with the job."

"Becca who was the first person you lost?" Buck Asked

Becca sighed as she closed her eyes and thought about that night, almost two years ago.

"His name was Noah Jefferson, age 45, I had to be on the 118 for three months, and there was a really bad building collapse due to an earthquake." Becca Said

"Oh god." Buck Said

"Yeah, Noah was pinned underneath some rubble, his legs were crushed and he was losing a lot of blood. While I was trying to keep him calm, he told me about himself, and how he was a bad alcoholic and junkie before and his wife kicked him out and kept his four kids away from him." Becca Said

"He had kids?" Buck said

"Yup, His oldest Chase, second oldest Kelly, middle child Ethan and his baby girl at the time Ronnie.
He talked about how he was doing this not only for himself, but he wanted to be in his kids life again after not seeing them for a year..." She paused, and her eyes got watery, "I tried, I really did try and get him out of there, but his time was slowly running out and..he told me it was okay let him go. And me being the probie that I was, I was determined to get him out of there because he needed to see his family one more time...but when Bobby found us, Noah was already gone." Becca Said, wiping a tear away with her hand.

"I'm so sorry that happened Becca." Buck Said

"Yeah me too." Becca softly said, letting out a sigh.

"But uh how did you really deal with it, really?" Buck Asked

"It uh..it took me a while to move on from it, but one day when I was cleaning the fire engine..his wife and kids came to see me they wanted to thank me, for doing my best at saving him. And they asked what was the last thing he said before he died, and I said that he asked me..to tell them that he loved them and will always will, and he's sorry that he couldn't get to them in time, but he will always miss them.." Becca Said

"And what did they say when you told them?" Buck Asked

"They understood, and they weren't mad..they're just glad that the last thing they knew before their dad died was that he did try and he was getting better, and I guess after that..the guilt and sadness I was feeling went away.." She looked over at him, "And eventually it will get better Evan, but in time." Becca Said, as Buck nodded.

"Mhm." The two of them shared a look, "Hey Becca." Buck Said

"Yeah Evan." Becca Said

"Thank you for coming with me, I'll never forget this." Buck Said, as Becca held his hand giving it a reassuring squeeze.

"Me neither, Buckley." Becca Said

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

The next day at work, they got a call about a window washer hanging from a building cause his wire snapped. They drove up front of the law firm building, as the exited the building Becca and Buck looked up seeing the window washer hanging by his harness.

"All right, Buck, that rig could go any second. I'm gonna go up to the roof and secure the cable, all right? You go up on the ladder, get it up to him. Let's go." Bobby ordered

Buck looked up and this sent instant nerved throughout his body, and shook his head.

"Bob. Bobby, I'll go up to the roof. You know, I-I can get there quicker and make sure the, the cable is secure." Buck offered, as Bobby looked at him questioningly.

"All right, good idea." Bobby Said

Buck quickly grabbed the equipment to set up the cable, Becca and another member of the crew helped Bobby gear up so he help save the hanging window washer.

After the call ended and Bobby successfully getting the washer down, they all went back to the fire station to relax before another call. Noticing that Buck wasn't around, Bobby went down to the locker room area where he was to go check on him.

"Don't. All right? I-I know I let you down," He sighed, leaning against the lockers, "A year ago, I
put in to be a Navy SEAL." Buck Said

"I didn't know you were in the Navy." Bobby Said

"I wasn't. Don't have to be in the Navy to try out for the SEALs. You just have to be particularly badass,
which you know...I am. Didn't have any trouble
with the physical part. Following orders wasn't my best quality, but hey, I was working on it." Buck Said

"Why didn't it stick?" Bobby Asked, intrigued.

"They wanted machines, people who could, uh...
flip a switch in their head and...turn off every natural, human instinctive emotion in their body, and I cannot do that." Buck Said

"Mhm." Bobby Said

"I don't, I don't want to do that. I love this job because I get to be the tough guy, but I also get to help people. Remember the first person you lost?" Buck Said

Bobby thinks back and sighed, "Katherine Vance... 32 years old, blonde hair, green eyes. She was wearing a blue University of Michigan T-shirt,
white shorts, and she had on black Converse High Tops. She had painted smiley faces on the toes.
Last thing she said to me was, "Please," and then
she was gone."

"What happened?" Buck Asked

"Hit by a drunk driver...I couldn't extract her in time. I'm glad you can't...flip that switch. I don't want you to. It's not gonna make you a better firefighter. And anybody who tells you that losing someone doesn't affect them is lying. The name and number of a trauma counselor, we have people in the department who help us deal with this kind of stuff.
You don't have to talk to me, but you do have to talk to someone." Bobby Said, handing him over a card.

The next day, dispatch called in about a potential jumper at an apartment complex downtown. Once the team arrived, they all saw a crowd surrounding the area recording with their cellphones, looking up they could see the jumper yelling at a woman from another balcony.

"Seriously? It's got to be a jumper?, he couldn't thr*aten himself with a gun?" Buck Said

"Right. 'Cause that would be preferable." Hen retorted

"Bedroom door is locked, the girlfriend is on the
living room balcony." Officer informed over the radio

"We're gonna have to do The Maneuver." Bobby Said

He along with Becca, Chim and Hen all glanced over at Buck who had that look of doubt in his face.

"Oh, Bobby, no, I..." Buck shook his head

"Yes." Bobby encouraged

"I'll do it." Chimney Said, volunteering.

"No, Buck's got this." Bobby affirmed

Buck looked up at the tall building, then looked down at everyone nervously until his eyes met with Becca's and she gave him a encouraging smile.

"You got this." Becca Said

While Buck was gearing up and preparing for another risky save, Bobby and Becca headed upstairs to the apartment level where the jumper is. They stumbled upon an argument between the couple.

"Why did you move in if I am so terrible?" He questioned

"You're not that terrible, will you please get down
so we can talk about how you can improve?" She pleaded

"I don't think I need to improve." He declined

"Fine. You want to jump? Go ahead and jump!" She yelled, flailing her arms up in defeat.

"I don't think that's a good idea." Becca Said, as she and Bobby walked out onto the balcony.

"I don't even know what to say to him anymore." She sighed

"Telling him to jump is probably not the way to go." Bobby Said

"He will not listen to me, okay? He's convinced that I cheated on him, and we keep going in circles." She noticed he was leaning, and snapped, "Don't you dare do that, I swear to God!"

"Well did you cheat on him?" Becca plainly asked

"This is the right time for that?" She questioned, as Becca and Bobby shared a look.

"So, that's a yes." Becca Said

"No, it isn't." She argued

"Just tell him you're sorry." Bobby encouraged

"Absolutely not." She replied, shaking her head.

"Okay, I'm not gonna admit that I cheated on him." She Said

"Look It doesn't have to be true, he just needs to hear that you're sorry alright?" Becca Said, as
the woman sighed.

"Fine. Leonard?" She turned to him, "I'm sorry.
Okay, I don't know what I was thinking, I love you and only you." She said, attempting to sound sincere.

"You lying bitch!" Leonard yelled, not being convinced.

"Oh, fine!" She groaned, looking back at them.

"I mean, that was pathetic." Becca admitted

"Oh, come on! I tried my best."

Bobby and Becca looked up and noticed that Buck was only a few feet away, he then looked back at Leonard.

"Hey. Leonard, listen to me we've all been there, man. I had a girlfriend cheat on me and..I thought she was the one, Leonard." He Said, gaming the attention of Leonard and his girlfriend, "I saw us going the whole way, marriage, kids, all of it. So I went out and I bought her a ring, a nice one.
I mean, we were on top of the Eiffel Tower,
I got down on one knee and I popped the question." Bobby Said

"Aw." The girlfriend said, buying into the story.

"I mean everybody was staring at us, she had tears in her eyes. You know what she said to me?" Bobby Said

Becca pressed onto the radio and whispered to Buck waiting for his cue, "Now." She Said

"She says to me, "Bobby..."

On cue Buck swung in like a badass and kicked Leonard off the railing, back into the apartment.
She ran over to Leonard, to check on him while Buck safely landed on the balcony, and a roar of cheers and applauses are heard from down below.

Meanwhile Leonard's girlfriend stopped their captain, "What did she say to you?"

"Who?" Bobby Asked

"The girl, on the Eiffel Tower." She Said

"I don't know. We never get that far in the story." Bobby Said, patting her on the shoulder as he walked over to Becca aiding to Leonard.

After a successful shift, they all arrived back at the station. Bobby exited from the captain's seat, as Buck and Becca got out seconds later.

"Hey, Bobby, um..thanks for pushing me back there.
I don't know what happened, I guess I had a moment." Buck said

"You bounced back and saved a man's life, you did good, kid." Bobby Said

"Told you, you could do it..just had to have a little faith that's all." Becca Said

"Five bucks says that guy's getting laid tonight." Chimney piped up, as Becca and Hen laughs.

"A guy ready to kill himself, and you think his
girlfriend is turned on?" Hen Said

"He was punishing her for cheating. Guilt sex. Help me out here, Buck." Chimney Said, looking at a distracted Buck.

Everyone follows his gaze as it landed upon, Devon's sister waiting outside the fire station. Buck walked outside and greeted her, she wanted to speak with him so they went upstairs to talk.

"I need to apologize to you, I was completely out of
line at the memorial. You didn't deserve that." She simply said

"You lost your brother, I get it." Buck Said

"Seven years ago, Devon tried to kill himself." She admitted, "We sent him to therapy and he got better.
Then, two months ago, he started isolating himself again. Wouldn't leave the house, I got scared and called his friend, Chad. Begged him to get Devon
out of the house. Chad said he'd ask Devon
to go to the state fair. When Devon said yes to the fair, I took it as a sign that he was getting better." She Said

"Hm." Buck Said, as she started getting emotional.

"So, you see, it's not your fault he's dead. It's mine." She Said, but Buck shook his head.

"Look, there was nothing either one of us could've done for Devon. Some people just don't want to be saved, a friend said that to me recently," He looked over the balcony at Becca talking to Chim and Hen,
"And, um... it helped." Buck Said, as Devon's nodded.

After her shift, on her way home Becca stopped at the grocery store to pick up some more food because her dad wanted to cook tonight, before he and her mom head back home in the morning.

Becca arrived back at the house, parking the car in her driveway. Grabbing her keys from her pocket, putting them into the door lock, she then entered the house.

"Hey, everyone I'm home." Becca Said

She heard footsteps coming down the stairs, as Bryan, Aryana and Dylan greeted her at the door.

"Hey, Mom." They all said simultaneously

"How was work?" Bryan Asked

"Long and grueling, can't wait to tell you guys about it. Hey wanna help me out here, I've got some more in the car." Becca Said

"Sure." Dylan Said

"I hope this time you got the fruit snacks we like, cause you forgot last time." Bryan Said

"Don't worry I didn't forget." Becca Replied

"Yes!" Bryan Said, as he walked out the door.

"Whatever's heavy, we'll leave it for him to grab." Aryana whispered to Dylan, as he nodded.

"Deal." Dylan Said, as they followed behind Bryan.

Becca walked into the kitchen and placed the two heavy grocery bags on the counter, soon her father walked into the room.

"Hey Rebecca." Danny Said, walking over to his daughter giving her a hug.

"Hey Dad." Becca Said

"Work was fine?" Danny Asked, helping her unload the bag.

"Yeah, saved a guy from jumping off a balcony, " Danny quirked up a brow, "Don't worry there's more to a story." Becca chuckled

"So...now that the tension has settled, are you going to talk to your mother?" Dylan Asked, as Becca looked at him.

"Why should I be the first one to say something, I'm the one who deserves an apology." Becca Said

"I know you do, but Rebecca you need to understand where this is coming from...it's coming from the heart, honestly." Danny Said

Becca was about to say something until the kids come in, with all the groceries.

"And we've got all the food." Dylan Said

"Yeah, because you two left me to get all the heavy bags." Bryan complained

"I mean you're the one who says he could "handle" there heavy lifting." Aryana teased, laughing.

"Thank you guys, you were a big help.." Becca Said

"All right we got this." Danny Said

The three of them left the kitchen leaving Becca and her dad to speak alone.

"So what you want me to apologize?" Becca questioned

"No, you don't have too. But at least here her out first.." Danny Said

"Where is she?" Becca Asked

"Upstairs, go ahead so I can start dinner, go on now." Danny Said

Becca sighed then caved in and left the kitchen, making her way up the stairs to the guest bedroom.
She opened the door to see her mother, putting some clothes into her suitcase.

"Oh, Rebecca, I didn't know you were home." Joyce Said

"Yeah I just got here, dad said you'd be up here." Becca Said

There's an awkward pause and silence between the two women, they both spoke at the same time.

"I want to say something." They Said

"No, you go first." Joyce Said

"Okay, Mom, I know you're never going to stop worrying about us..it's your job to. But, remember the first thing you told me when I became a mother?" Becca Said

Joyce zipped up her suitcase and nodded, "This road will not be easy, and that it will come with challenges that you will learn to overcome."

"Yes, and at 18 I didn't understand that yet, but at 26 I understand completely now. Yes being a single parent raising three children with a very demanding job, isn't easy. But I make it happen, and I try my absolute best and the kids know that..I've been a firefighter for almost two years now, and I've learned that I can do both, and I'm going to keep doing for as long as I can." Becca Said

Joyce looked at her daughter with a proud smile on her face, she patted the bed as Becca came to sit next to her.

"Oh Mija, I'm glad to hear you say that..I'm sorry for ever doubting you. I was just afraid that you couldn't handle it, but you proved me wrong by showing how much of a devoted person you are." She placed her hand on Becca's cheek, "You don't have to move back to Texas, this place has been your home for the last five years." Joyce Said

"Yeah, it has..but El Paso will always be home." Becca Said, as Joyce smiled as she pulled her in for a hug.

A few moments later Becca, Joyce and the kids were setting up the dinner table as there was a sudden knock at the door, everyone shared a look.

"You expecting someone?" Joyce questioned

"No, I'll be back." Becca Said

Becca placed the plate down then left the dining room, she walked towards the door and opened it, seeing Buck on her doorstep.

"Buck?," She furrowed her brows, "Hey." Becca Said

"Hey, Becca." Buck Said

"So uh what are you doing here, what's up?" Becca Asked

"Oh I came here to drop these off," He held up a pair of sunglasses in his hand, "You left these in my Jeep." Buck Said

"Thanks, I almost forgot about these," Becca Said, as she took them back.

"No problem." Buck Said

"So..is that why you drove all the way over here?" Becca Asked

"Uh no actually, I wanted to tell you how it went with Devon's sister." Buck Said

"So how did it go, is she still mad at you?" Becca questioned

"No, she came to apologize actually. She told me that Devon was suicidal once, and they tried giving him the help he needed, she started to blame herself but I reminded her of what a good friend of mine once said, sometimes we can't help those he can't be saved." Buck Said

Becca nodded at that, as she remembered saying that to him a couple of days ago.

"So how are you feeling now?" Becca Asked

"Honestly..a little bit better if I'm being honest." Buck Said

"Well I'm glad you are." Becca smiled, as her parents approached the door.

"Becca who's at the door." Danny Said

"Becca dinners-oh, hello who's this?" Joyce Asked

"Oh, Mom, Dad this is my friend Evan Buckley, he's a firefighter at the 118, Evan these are my parents Joyce and Danny Martinez." Becca Said, as Joyce and Danny shook Buck's hand.

"Oh Nice finally to meet you Mr & Mrs. Martinez, Becca didn't mention that her parents were in town." Buck Said, glancing at Becca.

"Well..I almost forgot, sorry." Becca Said

"It's so nice to meet you son." Danny Said

"Now we've met Howard, Henrietta and Captain Nash but not you..are you new?" Joyce Asked

"Yes I am, I've been working with Becca here for only four months now." Buck replied

"That's great, uh Evan, are you hungry?" Joyce Asked

"Uh.." Buck Said

"Im pretty sure he's eaten earlier mom." Becca Said

"Nonsense, I cooked so much food we could feed a small village. There's room for one more." Danny Said

"I made some of my delicious pasta, we'll actually it's from her Abeula but who cares." Joyce Said

"You know what, I can eat..plus I really didn't have any plans tonight." Buck Said

"That's the spirit, come inside Buck I'll fix you a plate." Danny Said, as Buck entered the house.

Buck looked around the nicely decorated house, filled with pictures of Becca and her kids, when she was growing up, pictures of her sisters, and with Hen and Chim.

He walked into the kitchen where he saw Bryan, Aryana and Dylan sitting at the table. He gave them a friendly smile, as he greeted himself to them.

"And let me guess you three must Bryan, Aryana and Dylan." Buck Said

"Who else would we be." Aryana Said, as they laughed.

"Are you a friend of our moms?" Dylan Asked

"Yeah, I'm a firefighter, I'm Evan Buckley but you guys can call me Buck for short." He Said

"Buck, I like that name." Aryana Said, smiling.

"Thanks." Buck Said

"So Buck, you got any cool stories to share about..our mom usually does that." Bryan Said

"Oh yeah, I've got a couple, I saved a guy from falling off a building." Buck simply said, as the three young children's eyes lit up.

"Awesome." They Said, as Buck smiled.

Becca and her mother watched Buck interact with the kids, Joyce nudged Becca.

"Now that's a handsome looking man." Joyce admitted

"Mom stop." Becca Said

"What I'm just saying, he's cute, seems to like kids..I don't know about you but I would date him." Joyce Said, as her daughter rolled her eyes.

"I'm not going to date Buck, I don't even like him like that." Becca huffed

"Oh don't worry Mija, you will." Joyce Said, as she patted her daughter on the butt as she walked towards the table.

Becca rolled her eyes at her mother then sat down at the table, next to Buck as her father brought out the delicious food he cooked earlier.

"I like your family, they're kinda cool." Buck whispered, leaning close to Becca.

"Yeah, I guess they are." Becca Smiled, as she began eating her dinner.
