Ackermans and Rhydduchs have always been believed to be two sides of the same coin. The Founder Ymir blessed both with power so blinding that it took something as surreal as a life-or-death situation to awaken them to their full potential.
Over centuries, stories were constructed and fabricated centering these two families. Parents would tell their children tales, painting the Kings Duo Guard as nothing but world heroes, hellbent on dedicating their lives to protecting the throne.
Teachers would tell their students similar stories, threading them into the history lessons that they taught, putting the Duo Guard on a pedestal, and creating something that young boys and girls could look up to and aspire to be.
The truth was that these families had been exploited and abused since they were first put on Earth, brainwashed into believing their only true purpose in life was to fight, fight, and fight some more. They were taught that their lives meant nothing over others and that keeping the royal family safe was the only way they could repay the Founder Ymir for blessing them with their power.
Ackermans and Rhydduchs remained loyal to their King, positioned beside him in every war that they fought. Rhydduch led his left, and Ackerman led his right. They would marry and breed, keeping both lineages strong and secure, training their offspring to fill the position of the next guard.
To keep the stability within the families over centuries, four rules were set in place to ensure that they continued to thrive.
Every Rhydduch and Ackerman child will undergo an extensive training program put together by previous guards. This will begin no later than eight years of age.
Every Rhydduch and Ackerman will marry by the age of 25.
Every Rhydduch and Ackerman will vow to conceive at least two children to keep the bloodlines flowing.
The Rhydduch and Ackerman surname takes dominance over any other, meaning no woman from either of these families will ever take their husband's surname.
This was until King Fritz fled civilization to live within the three walls, which protected him and his Eldian community from the threat of Titans.
King Fritz ended up retiring the Rhydduch and Ackerman families, freeing them from centuries of commitment to the throne. This act alone gave the Eldian community a new sense of peace and relief, for they knew that this could only mean that they were truly safe within the walls. The King wouldn't give up the protection from his two most loyal soldiers for no reason.
Even though their chains had been destroyed, and the families were free to live a normal life within the Eldian community, it seemed their blood was preventing this from happening.
Ymir had created both families for the sole purpose of protecting the King. This had been how it had been for thousands of years. Now that they had been freed from this path, they were lost. Their blood still compelled them to protect and follow orders given to them by anyone superior. They were slaves to their own curse. Realizing they were only born to follow one path, which had now been stripped away from them, both families faced devastation. The bloodlines became tainted and weak. The Ackerman bloodline thinned out as the years went by until only a handful were left, scattered around within the walls after being hunted to near extinction by the orders of a later King, who saw them as nothing but a threat.
The Rhydduchs secluded themselves in far-off villages, compelled by their blood to carry on training their offspring to become strong, awakening their powers to then push them into the King's Military. Over the years, the term 'Rhydduch Syndrome' was configured and given to the family, finally putting a name on their relentless stubbornness to get back to the King's side. A King who no longer needed them.
