047 - Don't Let Go
We landed in a hallway. Lights flickered on and off, and it looked abandoned, except for once single door. But that wasn't my biggest worry.
I hadn't seen Gally fall through the hole. Or see him standing next to us.
No, no, no. Panic hit me as someone I couldn't even recognize at that point pulled me with them. Voices were blurred. My mind was making itself crazy.
"Where's Gally?" I didn't even know who I asked. I could barely see where the hell I was. But my feet kept moving as my vision got blurry with my own tears. "Where's Gally?"
I did notice the smell of blood. Someone was still walking with me, but not Gally. It wasn't his smell. His way of touching me.
"Gally— where's Gally?" I repeated, sobs almost leaving my mouth. Panic blocked my windpipe.
"Shh, let's just sit down for a bit." A British voice in front of me. Newt. He sat me down, as he said. My back was leaning against a wall.
I couldn't tell how many time was passing. I felt myself falling into a black abyss, and it was strange. "Newt, did you— did you see Gally?"
A tear rolled down my cheek as he shook his head. I sat there in silence for a while, my mind spinning and rolling. There was a female voice in the background, but I couldn't understand it.
"Valerie." Newt again. "Come on, let's get up. Maybe we find Gally."
I nodded, unaware of anything. Got up, and wiped tears out of my eyes. Things were happening too fast for me to register, but the next thing I knew was that the others gathered around me, too.
Daylight shined into the room. I blinked a few times, soon able to see something. I was in a room with lots of computers. Dead bodies of people dressed in white lay on the ground. Blood splashes on the ground and walls, and lights also flickering.
There was a long hallway in front of us. At the end of it was the daylight.
"Is it over?" Chuck peeped.
"We have to find Gally." I whispered to only myself.
"She said we were important." Newt spoke. I had no idea what he was talking about. "What are we supposed to do now?"
"Let's get out of here." Thomas spoke quietly.
"No."
I spun around immediately, and my face lit up. He was standing there. And I was about to reach forward, but Thomas stopped me by holding his hand in front of me.
"Don't. He's been stung."
My breathing stopped again. I stared at Gally and the shaking gun in his hands. Tears were streaming down his face, and his eyes were black. I nearly started crying.
"We can't leave." His voice came out shaky.
"We did." Thomas took a step forward, motioning for Gally to calm. "Gally, we're out. We're free."
His eyes narrowed. Muscles in his face tensed as more tears streamed. "Free? You think we're free out there? No. No, there's no escape from this place." He shook his head.
I somehow wasn't afraid of him. But I was of what would happen.
"Gally, listen to me. You're not thinking straight. You're not."
I wasn't able to speak. The lump in my throat wouldn't let me.
"Now, we can help you. Just put down the gun." Thomas added. He was still talking slow, watching Gally right in the eyes.
"I belong to the maze." He said.
"Just put down the gun."
"We all do."
Three people jumped forward at once. Thomas, Chuck, and I. Thomas and I to stop Gally, and Chuck to protect Thomas, since the gun had been pointed at him.
And a spear got thrown, right into Gally's chest.
I didn't know by who. I didn't care.
Gally choked. He was making horrible noises, struggling to stay alive. But he didn't. He fell down on his knees, followed by the rest of his body.
I was finally able to move again. I ran over to Gally, taking him in his arms. "No... no, no." I was shaking my head so hard it made me dizzy. "Gally. Don't."
But his black eyes stayed wide open. He didn't blink. Or move. Or breathe. It happened way too fast.
Tears were already falling down my cheeks like a waterfall. "Gally. No." My lower lip was shaking. "Wake up. You said— you said we would get a life outside the maze together. Remember?"
Of course talking to him wasn't gonna help anything, but come on.
My world now did fall apart. My heart shattered in a million pieces. I had tears running down my cheeks like never before. The rest of the Gladers had disappeared from my attention.
"We got out, Gally." I told him, my voice shaking. "We can live safely. Just wake up and— and we'll get a serum or something. I-I'm sure someone must have it. Or a medicine." I was sobbing loudly. "Please."
There was no answer.
I cupped his face, stroking it. "I love you, Gally." I whispered, about to accept his death, though I would never be able to live without him, I thought, at least.
And then,
"Thomas..." Chuck warned.
They were the first to see the red stain in his shirt.
