Chapter 14 ~ Stolen Glances On The Playground
Episode: Season 4 - After School Special Pt. 2
It turns out Sam was right, though. There was a case here. Some student in one of the classes had jammed another's fist into a blender in Home Ec. Figuring it was ghost possession, Sam did some research and found out only one violent death had occurred in the school - that of suicide committed by a student. Barry. I was saddened when Sam informed me. We'd both become fast friends with the boy and it hurt to hear that he'd killed himself only a year after we'd left. He'd had a hard time in school but neither of us knew the extent of it, I suppose.
~ Flashback ~
A laugh escaped my mouth as Barry made a joke about that new movie, The Lost World: Jurassic Park. I shook my head, grinning as I trudged after him and Sam, the PowerPuff Girls logo on my shirt glinting off the fluorescent lighting in the hallway.
"Okay, fair point. But I mean, come on, you have to admit - the CGI is amazing on it!" I enthused and both boys nodded in agreement.
Just then, we saw Dean kissing some girl. Her hair fell in blonde curls that framed her heart-shaped face. Quickly, I glanced away, rolling my eyes at them. They broke away then and Dean.
"Hey, Sammy, Parksy." Dean nodded to us, smiling like an idiot.
I didn't even acknowledge him as Sam said 'hi', making my way down the crowded hallway.
"That's your brother with Amanda Heckerling? He's cool," Barry breathed out in awe and I huffed.
"Yeah, he thinks so." I said over my shoulder, waves of my long ebony hair bouncing as I walked, "Honestly though, I think that girl looks like a vampire."
Sam sent me a warning look but before he could say anything, the bully of the school - Dirk MacGregor - walked up to us.
"Hey, tough guy. I've been looking for you. Still wanna take Barry's place?"
Sam and him got into it then, the both of them throwing punches. I wasn't worried about Sammy though - I knew he could take care of himself. We may be young but we both knew how to fight. Dean however was not happy when he found out...
"That kid's dead," Dean seethed, pacing back and forth as Sam and I sat on a picnic bench.
I ran a hand over the buttons on my Tamagotchi in my pocket and Sam sighed.
"Dean-" he started but his brother cut him off.
"I'm gonna rip his lungs out!" he spat, emerald eyes hardening.
"It's not a big deal," Sam insisted.
"Sammy, not a big deal? Look at yourself! If Dad was here-"
"He's not,"
"Well, I am! And as soon as I'm finished with that-" Dean started, raising his voice.
"Just shut up, okay?" Sam cut him off, "I don't need your help,"
"That's right, you don't. You could have torn him apart. So why didn't you?"
"Because I don't wanna be the freak for once, Dean. I wanna be normal,"
"So taking a beating, that's normal?" Dean shot back.
"Any word from John?" I changed the subject and Sam sighed in defeat.
"He called this morning. He said he's going to be another week, at least," he shrugged.
"We weren't supposed to be here this long!" I groaned, absentmindedly fingering the Scooby-Doo key-chain on my backpack.
"At least you've got Amanda. She's cool," Sam smiled slightly and I snorted, rolling my dark eyes.
"Yeah, sure she is. For a popular, stuck-up-" I started and Dean shot me a glare.
I scoffed, arching my eyebrows
"What? It's not as if you don't know it's true!" I retorted with venom lacing my post-pre-teen voice.
"Dude, she wants me to meet her parents. I don't do parents." he let out a sigh just as the bell rang.
Sam and I both groaned, slinging our backpacks over our shoulders as we bid Dean goodbye. The grass was still wet with dew as we headed back inside. Sam went ahead in but I lingered in the doorway as kids filtered past me, turning back around as I placed one hand on the door-frame. A kid passed by me then, a Walkman blaring loudly in her hand.
"Although loneliness has always been a friend of mine, I'm leavin' my life in your hands.." the Backstreet boys sang.
Amanda strolled over to Dean then, a bright smile fixed in place. I almost gagged at her peppiness. When Dean saw her, he smiled back and immediately kissed her, his hands holding onto her hips.
"People say I'm crazy and that I am blind, risking it all in a glance..."
Leaning my head on the door-frame, a sigh escaped my lips. Her hands rested on his chest as he kissed her over and over, sweet and gentle.
"And how you got me blind is still a mystery, I can't get you out of my head..."
After a few more seconds, she broke away and smiling, he intertwined their fingers as they walked off towards class. Slowly, I pressed my fingers to my own lips and my eyes briefly fluttered closed, imagining how it would feel if he kissed me like that. Why couldn't I get him out of my head? Sighing, I dropped my fingers and spun on my heel, racing after Sam down the hallway.
~ End of Flashback ~
We salted and burned Barry's bones although it didn't help. Apparently, Barry hadn't been the spirit after all. Instead it had been Dirk the Jerk. After finding what had been tethering him here, we burned it, sending him away for good. As we drove off down the road, the school fading in the distance behind us, I bit my lip, thinking of everything. Things had changed so much.
And as I met Dean's candy-apple green eyes in the mirror above the dashboard, I knew the changes had been for the better.
"So was it just me or did you guys think that that girl Dean dated looked like Caroline Forbes too?"
