22| DON'T YOU EVER TOUCH HER AGAIN, RAFE

"I just sent you Gavin's address." Joey spoke over the phone to Kie, looking up at the cloudy sky as a raindrop hit her left cheek.
"And you're positive this was the man that flew the plane that day?" Kie voiced her concern over the speaker. "This is so serious, Jo."
"Kie, trust me, okay? This is 100% our guy." she confirmed for her, glancing up at the place she stood. "I'm at the house."
"Joey, for real, be carful." Kie said back with a sigh. "Are you sure you don't want to come with us?"
"If we're gonna clear John B's name, we have to multitask." Joey said back, inhaling with a shake of her head. "Even if it means I have to loose my dignity in the process."
"Call us if he tries anything with you. JJ says he'll show up with the gun." Kie said from the other line, making Joey smile. "Call you when we finish this?"
"Definitely." Joey nodded, the pair hanging up. Joey sighed, walking up to the door as her fist knocked on the wood. This might have been the most stupid idea she'd ever had. But, desperate times call for stupid measures.
"Oh, hell." Rafe looked in disbelief as he stared at Joey. "What are you doing here?"
"Well, I was hoping to get your nice step momma." Joey lied, adjusting the glasses she hadn't worn in years. "I'm doing a article for the school news paper on Kook life."
"What the hells that suppose to mean?" Rafe shook his head, looking around. "Huh? You think i'm dumb?"
"Wanna pat me down?" she rose her eyebrows. "I just have a few questions about how the Kook Academy is different from our school. Here on strictly business."
"Yeah, and what made you come just to me?" Rafe looked at her in disbelief.
"We want the same thing, Rafe." Joey shook her head with an exhale. "For this shit to just be behind us."
It wasn't completely a lie, and that's what made it so believable. Rafe eyed her a second longer as Joey exhaled. "Strictly business."
He hesitated, looking around slightly. "All right, but be quick, okay? No time for you."
"Three minutes tops." Joey said back, walking into the house and waiting for him to lead the way.
"Two." Rafe corrected her, looking up at the sky. "It's gonna rain soon."
Joey felt weary the second she turned back to look at him, looking out the door as it continued to sprinkle outside. He took a final look, shutting the door and turning to her. "So, what was it you wanted to talk to me about?"
Turns out, like Joey suspected, Rafe loved to talk about his privilege. Two minutes had turned into six minutes, and he had only answered one question. "It just goes to show why our side of the island is healthier, cleaner, and a better environment then on The Cut."
Joey rose her eyebrows, biting her tongue. "So-So what you're saying is you, Rafe, care about the environment?"
"You think I wanna walk outside to see a shitty place?" he looked at her in disbelief. "Is that so hard for you to believe?"
"Just mandated questions." Joey forced a tight lipped smile, fighting the urge to stab him in the throat with her pen. "Which leads me to your relationship with your family."
"What?" he looked at her in disbelief. "Why do you care?"
"Well, it's a question to determine if financial problems commonly lead to divorce or not. As in, are wealthier couples likely to be prone to divorce?" Joey nodded her head. She sounded elegant, educated, and professional. Joey hadn't gotten to express herself much in this sort of way, and despite hating being within ten feet of Rafe Cameron, she liked pretending to be someone else.
"My family is fine. I take after my dad." Rafe said confidently.
"As in you're going to take over the family business?" Joey gave a questionable look.
Rafe tilted his head with a half grin. "You know, you're really pretty when you aren't being such a bitch."
Joey cleared her throat. "Let's stay professional."
"No, i'm serious. Whenever you talk like a normal person, when you have no motive." he listed on, nodding his head. He was in beat with the rain pouring down outside. Joey gave him an uncomfortable look. "You wanna know about my dads Estate?"
"More so if that's something you're interested in." she corrected him, trying to get as far away from the conversation as possible.
"Okay." Rafe nodded, standing up. "I'll show you how the plan works out. It's on files."
Joey thought it would be a perfect opportunity to get a look around the house, a look into anything to get Rafe to do any form of confession. If she could get him talking about his dad, she could slowly get into his head to have him confess to killing the sheriff. Her phone in her pocket continued to video their conversation. "I'll be right back. It's in my truck."
Joey nodded her head, watching him hurry out into the rain. She looked around at the house, the counters clean, nothing out to help her. Joey knew that the only way she could be useful was by getting Rafe to talk, and if she had to pretend to not be who she was, and take his bullshit, then she would.
Nearly ten minutes went by, Rafe wasn't back. Joey tried to peak through the windows, getting any sort of peak at him. Joey hesitated, grasping the door knob. It squeaked when she turned it, slowly pulling it open as the pouring rain filled her ear drums. "Rafe!"
Joey made the mistake of taking a single step forward, because the second she was out of the door way, a pair of hands grasped her shirt and shoved her head into one of the barrels behind the house. They were originally there for looks, Roses doing. But, from the rain, they'd filled up with water. Joey tried to fight against Rafe, the rain water filling her nose and lungs. The burning traveling all through her body. Rafe struggled to keep her down. "You think you're smart? Huh? You think you're smarter then me? I know your motive! I know you're here because you want to-"
He was cut off with a golf club to the back of the head, and again, and one more time until he was forced to back up and let Joey go. Joey coughed as she sat up, hunching over to the side as she coughed violently, trying to gain a breath that simply didn't seem like it was there.
Topper hit Rafe in the face with the golf club, grabbing his shirt when he fell down. "Don't you ever touch her again, Rafe. Never."
Joey finally found her breath, the rain pouring down on her head as she coughed. Topper came to her side. "You okay? You can breath?"
She nodded, her throat in too much pain to talk. Topper tried to shield her face of the pouring rain. "Let's get outta here."
Joey had never agreed with him more then she did now.
