Amias Blackwood had been attending Forks High School for several months now. Time tends to fly as a vampire; the days blending into one another the older one gets. He doesn't even realise how long it's been until he spots the date whenever it catches his eye. The utensil town had proved itself to be as boring as its reputation stated it to be, and he was yet to decide whether he enjoyed it or not. Every morning as they made their way to the school, Amias would contemplate heading straight back to Volterra. They often sent him letters to let him know that they missed him strangely, and that they would be in touch soon as they needed him to complete a task for them.
Listening to the gossip regarding himself and the Cullen family turned to be entertaining for a short amount of time among with the rumours about his past, and why he joined the Cullen family—of course, no one came close to guessing what truly happened, but, the rumours weren't short of amusing with how crazy some of them would be.
Jessica Stanley had been relentless when it came to the gossip, wanting to know almost everything about him before she tried to prey on him. Amias was almost tempted to play along to get his fun out of her but decided against it when she continuously wouldn't leave him alone, and he came to the conclusion that she was too annoying; and would be even worse once he gave her what she wanted.
The poor mind reader of the Cullen family was stuck having to listen to her scandalous thoughts about Amias and himself, only for them to be turned bitter once she had been turned down. But it didn't stop her from trying.
It was strange how she was so different compared to her friends who seemed to be very genuine—mostly Angela Weber, but she seemed to be the glue of the friendship group. The only one who was similar to Jessica was her friend, Lauren Mallory—who Amias had sat next to on his first day, and was so much worse when it came to desiring the attention from the boys that attended their school; even going the step further to date Mike Newton, who Jessica had apparently been crushing on since middle school.
Amias had been unlucky enough to end up having to be her partner in their History class since then. Seeing as Amias had lived through the majority of what they covered, he was able to pass through it with ease, and Lauren was just as happy to slap her name on the work since he was getting everything done correctly, all while thinking provocative thoughts about the vampire beside her, according to Edward. She had gotten over trying to pretend she knew everything in class by the third lesson and it thankfully limited her talking to him.
He had gotten used to the routine of pretending to be a teenager quite quickly, and he had picked up the mannerisms of the Cullens quickly also.
Rosalie liked to think a lot about herself according to Edward; and ever since that was brought up, Amias had only ever caught her looking at herself every now and again. Whether it be the reflection of a mirror, window or screen—Rosalie looked at herself and mulled over her own perfection. Not that it was a bad thing, she was beautiful and had every reason to do so. In her mind, no one's hair was as beautifully golden, no ones shape was as perfectly curved and no human could compare to her. None of them her were her equal.
Emmett was usually carefree—except for today as he had just lost to a wrestling match with Jasper earlier that morning. It would take all of his patience to wait until the end of the school day to organise a rematch. He had never lost a fight except against Jasper, and he was eager and determined to do so at least once.
Jasper stood suffering. He had the least amount of control over his thirst for human blood, and he fought constantly in doing something that would bring shame to the Cullen family. He was fine at home but whenever they were at school; he was frozen. He wouldn't perform the natural human ticks in order to blend in, he was simply frozen.
Emmett would pull at his hair. Rosalie would cross her legs from one to the other or flip her hair. Alice would tap her foot. Edward would look around the room and observe different patterns on the walls, and Amias would fiddle with his hands. Jasper's hair wouldn't even react to the air coming from the air vents—it was like he was a wax figure.
Alice worried over Jasper's state. Amias would catch the glances between her and Edward, a silent conversation being had between them to make sure there were no threats. It was a dangerous thing to have him there, but there was no other way to get him used to being around humans. She usually monitored his future to see if there was any chance of him attacking an innocent human if his thirst ever got the best of him and Edward would monitor her visions. They often stuck together to help him.
Alice would try to remind Jasper to try to think of them as people, telling him about their lives so he wouldn't see them as a meal. But sometimes he would just grow frustrated with being pushed. Alice knew when to stop, however, she knew his limitations with her. It was as if they could read each other's minds as well, like they knew each other's every need.
A couple of weeks prior, word around town was that the Chief's daughter was going to be moving to Forks. He had been practically skipping around town announcing to everyone who would listen about his daughter coming to live with him. He hadn't seen her since she was a much younger child and everyone could see how much he loved her despite the fact that he rarely saw her because of her living in another state.
Since the arrival of Amias, the town had been buzzing with excitement over a new student since no sane person would ever willingly move to such a small town and the chief's daughter was no exception to that—two new people was apparently unheard of.
The girl had started today. Edward had looked into the minds of students and had seen her face. Apparently she was nothing special; just an ordinary human girl, but the excitement over her arrival reminded him of when one would hold a shiny new object in front of a toddler. Amias didn't need to be a mind reader to know that half of the males were already picturing themselves with her, completely infatuated like a bunch of sheep just because she was something new to look at.
"Lauren and Jessica are thinking about you again." Edward informed him quietly as they entered the cafeteria to sit down at their unofficially assigned table. It was far away from the rest of them. Amias was still unsure if it was on purpose or coincidence, but thankful it was far away enough that the humans wouldn't notice that they didn't eat, despite the food trays in front of them that were being used as props, "You might have to do something to end their feud."
Amias rolled his eyes in annoyance at the reminder. Jessica and Lauren had been feuding between themselves over him since he first came, and unfortunately he was stuck with the both of them in majority of their classes. Separately, thankfully. Hell wouldn't even compare to having to deal with the both of them at once. Most of their arguing were passive aggressive comments and doing small things to embarrass the other in front of him. It was amusing at first, but now, he couldn't escape them.
The new girl walked over towards her table, lead by the insufferable Mike Newton, and sat down to eat, answering any intruding questions from her new acquaintances; and for half a second, Amias locked eyes with a pair of large, chocolate brown eyes that belonged to her. Isabella Swan— or just Bella, as she preferred to be called. Amias wasn't exactly sure where Edward had gotten the explanation of 'ordinary girl'. She was beautiful in the most innocent way, almost too delicate for Amias' taste, however.
"Who are they?" He heard her voice ask Jessica quietly. She seemed intimidated by them all.
Angela Webber looked up to see who she was talking about, looking away just as quickly. Angela rested her elbows on the table in front of her. "The Cullens." She answered nicely, keeping her tone neutral about them.
Jessica looked at her friendship group before a mischievous look on her face grew, "They're Dr. and Mrs. Cullen's foster kids. They moved down here from Alaska, like, a few years ago." She said, and Bella nodded, appreciative of the extra information.
"They kind of keep to themselves." Angela added, even though she knew that people mainly avoided them due to being intimidated by them, and the rumours that had been spread around by the other students since they first came.
"Yeah, cause they're all together." The girl couldn't hold it in any longer and Amias was just waiting for her to spit it out, and Angela pursed her lips from her friend proving her inner thought to be correct. "Like, together, together."
To any outsider, it was most likely strange to the fact that adoptive siblings were together. They couldn't of ever known that they had been together and were only posing.
"The blonde girl—that's Rosalie; and the big dark-haired guy—Emmett, they're, like, a thing." Jessica's voice lowered to a whisper so no one else could hear who they were talking about, even though Amias' hearing was picking up everything, "I'm not even sure that's legal."
"Jess, they're not actually related." Angela reminded her friend with a scoff. Jessica was probably one of the main reasons that people didn't speak to them. They thought it was weird that the adoptive siblings were together, but Angela didn't mind since it wasn't hurting anyone, and, like she said: they weren't actually related.
"Yeah, but they live together. It's weird." Jessica defended herself. She then directed her gaze to Alice and Jasper, "And, okay, the little dark-haired girl is Alice. She's really weird, and she's with Jasper—the blonde one who looks like he's in pain." Both Edward and Amias looked away when they looked towards them, "And that's Edward. Totally gorgeous but very closed off. Only really talks to his siblings."
"And they're all adopted?" Bella looked astounded, "That's really nice of Dr. Cullen and his wife to adopt all of them."
"Yeah, Rosalie and Jasper are the only ones that are actually related. I think they did it because his wife can't have kids." Jessica continued. She was right of course, Esme couldn't have kids, and after the death of her first child, he thought she wouldn't want to try again anyway. She had the Cullens.
Bella then looked towards Amias, "Who's he?" She asked Jessica.
"Oh, that's Amias Blackwood." Lauren responded quickly for Jessica, trying to hide her jealousy that was threatening to spill out from Bella even looking at the man of her dreams, "He joined the family fairly recently. But, he doesn't date. Apparently, none of the girls here are good enough for him." She snipped and Amias let out a chuckle. "Like I care, you know?"
"What's so funny?" Rosalie questioned, the table had been absolutely silent until the much older vampire let out a chuckle.
"Jessica Stanley is giving the new girl all the dirty laundry on the Cullen family." Edward answered for him with amusement.
Emmett let out a chuckle, "I hope she's making it interesting." He thought out loud.
Edward shrugged, "Rather unimaginative, actually." He told his adoptive brother, "Just the barest hint of scandal. Not an ounce of horror. I'm a little disappointed, she could've done a lot better."
Amias watched the human brunette turn her head to stare at him, she seemed to be intrigued by him and the Cullens because of Jessica's explanations of them which amused him. He brought his hand up and waved at her, twinkling his fingers in a teasing manner and grinning as the girl blushed and looked away.
"Do you have to draw any more attention to us?" Rosalie scowled at him while crossing her arms.
Amias simply let out a laugh, "I'm a vampire pretending to be a teenage boy. Let me have my fun." If anything, Amias would be the one to be the most careful about not exposing their secret. He was only just waving at her, anyway, "I think she's into me." Amias stated about the human girl, turning his head to look at Edward, "Can you tell?"
"Or, is she afraid of us?" Emmett added on. Everyone was afraid of the beautiful and outsider family. They had been there for years yet the students couldn't accept them properly.
His eyebrows furrowed, "I can't read her mind." He told Amias, an intrigued expression dawning on Amias as he turned back to the Swan girl.
"That sure is interesting..." Amias commented as the bell rang and they made their way to the classes, throwing away the full trays of food into the trash on the way out of the cafeteria.
