Y/n played for the Las Vegas Aces after returning to basketball for the first time in years since playing ball in college. She took a long hiatus from basketball, being drafted to the W at 19 but getting waived by the Phoenix Mercury. After getting waived, she stopped playing. She turned down the offers of other teams and decided she wanted a break from basketball.

She never imagined she'd ever come back to the sport, having made herself quite the career in medicine. It was 2018 when she left her chief position in Seattle to work as a physical therapist in Las Vegas. She had helped some football and NBA athletes recover from their injuries, which put her name in the hands of the Las Vegas Aces management.

They had a recent injury in Kelsey Plum, who tore her achilles tendon. They needed a very good physical therapist for her, so they called y/n. She agreed, obviously. Kelsey would be the first WNBA player she would help recover. When she came into her office, she knew exactly who she was, remembering y/n as a Iowa Hawkeye legend.

Then the pandemic hit, and so did quarantine. The Olympics had to be pushed back to a further date, and Kelsey had to be in good shape for that time. So she proposed that y/n move in with her. And that's what they did. It was hard to adjust to at first, but they slowly got more comfortable with each other. And the more comfortable they got...the more the feelings started to grow.

It was a random Thursday that changed everything for them. So let's go back to that night.

"Come on, we goin' out." Kelsey groaned, stuffing her face into the pillow. "I don't wanna go."

"Get up or I'm not cookin' dinner for the next week." She huffed, getting up from her spot on the couch. She pulled on her shoes, and reluctantly followed her therapist out. She drove her down to the Aces practice facility, leaving her completely confused because she knew it was closed afterhours. "What are we doing here? You know it's closed right?"

Y/n smirked, dangling the keys in her hand. "Not for us."

Kelsey furrowed her brows in confusion, "where did you get those?"

"I have my ways." She smiled, unlocking the door and holding it open for the player. Kelsey huffed, walking inside and y/n lead her down the hall to the court. She flipped on the lights and set down her bag. She pulled out a pair of basketball shoes and held them out to Kelsey. "Put 'em on."

"Seriously? I thought we were getting food."

"Put them on," she ordered more firmly.

"Bossy much?" Kelsey mumbled, but she still obeyed, taking a seat and changing into the shoes.

"Don't talk back to me." Y/n picked up a ball off the rack, dribbling it for a few seconds before turning back to look at Kelsey. She passed her the ball, the Aces guard looking at her, deep in thought. Despite their time spent together, they had never talked about y/n's basketball career. She tried once but it was shut down and never spoken about again.

"Hey, how come you stopped playing ball?"

She sighed, annoyed with this subject each time it was asked. "I don't know."

Kelsey saw right through her bullshit every time. "Liar. Tell me why. Come on, we're friends. I told you my secrets."

She chewed on her gum, taking a second to contemplate it. "I needed a break..from all the attention, the press, the fans. Losing the NCAA tournament and jumping into the draft..it was too much, too much on my mental heath, too much on my physical health. When I got waived, I don't think I ever seen my family so disappointed in me. I never wanted to feel that way again. So, I gave up basketball. Put my degrees to use. Never looked back."

Her story was nothing short of depressing. Kelsey couldn't help but think that if her family had just supported her, maybe she'd still be playing. Maybe she'd be considered a legend like Candace Parker and Diana Taurasi. "Do you still talk to your family?"

"Uh, not really, just my Dad. He's the only one who supported me giving up basketball." She brushed off her hands and moved to the halfcourt. "Enough talk about me. Come on. Let's see how that leg's holdin' up."

"We're not seriously doing jump ball, right?"

"Uh, yes we are."

"You're tall as shit. You don't seriously expect me to win right?" Kelsey deadpanned, receiving a very amused look.

"Stop complaining. I'm giving you aย  good start. Just try. Trust yourself." Y/n encouraged, taking the ball and tossing it up high. When it came back down Kelsey jumped up to try and hit her way, and of course y/n beat her to it. She recovered the ball and smiled, "see? You jumped pretty high. How does the leg feel?"

Kelsey nods, "yeah, feels pretty good." She grinned, getting into a defensive position. "What are you waiting for? We playin' one on one, ain't we? Don't go easy on me now."

"You're gettin' a little too cocky. Tone it down." Y/n chuckled, dribbling the ball between her legs like it was second nature. "Says the one who hasn't played in a decade," Kelsey shot back. She scoffed, pushing her off before stepping back and taking the three. "What was that you were saying baby?"

Kelsey smiled at her arrogance, running over to grab the ball. "Didn't know you also flirted with your opponents."

"Only when they're pretty." Y/n shrugs, chewing on her gum as she moved into a defensive stance.

"Aw, you think I'm pretty? How flattering." She smiled, dribbling the ball, she shoved her arm into her and ran past, getting the layup. Y/n was laid out on the floor, the strength in Kelsey's push knocking the breath out of her. Kelsey chuckled, looking down at her, "you need to get that weight up. You can't be tall and weak."

"Give me some grace. I ain't done this in a while." Y/n groaned, still laying there trying to catch her breath.

Kelsey smiled, extending a hand to her therapist. She took it and allowed her to pull her up. They kept going, doing a first to 20, something Kelsey just managed to win by one point. Y/n still gave her a pretty hard time. "I still got it!" She grinned, turning to see y/n laid out on the floor like a starfish. She was exhausted. Kelsey's strength was not easy to work against.

"I think you might need the physical therapist," she joked, sitting down on the floor beside her.

"How's your leg feel?" In all honesty, Kelsey wanted to lie. Her leg felt great, it felt dependable. But, if y/n knew that, her job would be done and she'd move out. "Uhm..it's still hurts a little." Y/n knew immediately she was lying. She only hesitated when she was lying. "Why are you lying to me?"

She sighed, staring up at the bright ceiling. Y/n sat up and turns to her, setting a hand on her face to direct her sight back to her. "You don't gotta lie to me. What's wrong?"

"I don't want you to go."

"What do you mean? I'm not goin' nowhere. I'll still be at your games when I can. And you got my number. You could call me whenever you want. We'll still be friends." Her oblivious nature was a little frustrating for Kelsey. No matter what she said, y/n never understood what she really meant. That, or she was in denial herself.

"I don't wanna be your friend, y/n."

She frowned, confused by what she meant. "What?"

She leaned closer, y/n's heart beginning to race the more inches closed between them. "I wanna be more than that. I want you to be my girlfriend. And I don't want you to move out."

She was in denial for so long it felt a little revealing to hear she wasn't the only one feeling this way. But no matter how badly she wanted it, she couldn't risk losing her job. It was her main source of income and living in Vegas wasn't cheap by any means. "I'd get in trouble for that.."

"Not if you don't work there." She frowned, brows scrunched in confusion, not entirely sure what she was implying. "You could be one of the Aces trainers. The pays good, a lot better than what you're getting now." Pulling her bottom lip between her teeth, she contemplated. It sounded like a good idea. And she'd get to be with Kelsey all the time. It was a win win situation.

"Okay..yeah, I'm in."

Kelsey grinned, immediately leaning forward to connect their lips. They smiled into it, teeth clashing but they didn't care.

It had been five years since then. They had still been going strong since. They got married in 2023, and it was kept a secret from the public. The only ones who knew were obviously her Aces teammates, her family, and y/n's dad. She knew y/n wouldn't want all the public attention on their relationship so she was okay with keeping it between them.

Throughout that time, Kelsey had given y/n the courage to come back to basketball. She helped her fall back in love with it, providing the support her family hadn't given her. And she gave her the same support when Kelsey decided to take a new path and join the Los Angeles Sparks for the 2025 season.
But, to her former Aces teammates surprise, y/n wasn't gonna follow her. She was staying back and joining the Aces for what would technically be considered her rookie season.

Fans were very surprised to hear about her return, but they were nothing short of excited. And this time, she had made the team. It was surprising to see her play again, and even more surprising to see her putting up MVP numbers. She played nothing like a rookie. She played like a seasoned vet, and they were already looking at her for a potential MVP candidate.

Truthfully, she didn't care for MVP. She just wanted to have a good healthy season. She needed to prove to herself that she was capable of being in the pro league. That she had always been good enough.

It was Friday, May 30th. It was the Aces vs Sparks, the game both y/n and Kelsey had been looking forward to. Y/n was in practice when Kelsey had landed in Vegas for the game. She was walking out to the parking lot, Jewell beside her since they were going the same way. "No- I strongly believe pineapples belong on pizza. Who doesn't love a good sweet and savory combo?"

Jewell paused, reaching over to nudge y/n when she caught sight of Kelsey standing by y/n's car. "Um, I think someone's here for you."

Y/n frowned in confusion before looking up, eyes landing on her beautiful wife. Kelsey waved her fingers with a small smile, "hey wife." The coffee in her hand slipped from her fingers, her bag dropped from her shoulder and she ran forward, wrapping her arms around her wife. She lifted her off the ground, twirling her around with the brightest smile.

Kelsey smiled up at her, "did you miss me?"

She didn't reply, verbally anyways. She wasted no time bringing her into a much needed kiss, her wife's arms sliding around her neck. Pulling away, they both smiled at each other, eyes filled with love and excitement. "I missed you, my beautiful wife," she breathed out. Kelsey pressed a peck to her lips, blushing from her words. "I missed you too, my favorite therapist."

She chuckled, "I'm not a therapist anymore."

"Well you never stopped being mine," she countered.

Jewell cleared her throat, causing them to turn to her. "Sorry to interrupt this very sweet moment but you uh, you dropped this." She held out y/n's bag to her, and she took it with a small chuckle. Kelsey walked over, "hey Jewell, you enjoying my spot?" She teased.

"That's funny. You got jokes." Jewell chuckled, bringing her into a hug.

Y/n picked up the coffee she dropped and ran to throw it away before coming back. "See you tomorrow, Jewell," she waved to her teammate before unlocking her car. She pulled open the door for her wife, "such a gentleman," Kelsey teased.

"I see LA has made you funnier," y/n retorts.

She tossed her bag into the back and got into the driver's seat. She turned to her beautiful wife, "so, what do you wanna do first? Food or sex?"

Kelsey hummed, squinting in deep thought as y/n pressed a little kiss to her wedding band. "Sex, and then food."

Y/n grinned, pressing a kiss to her lips. "You read my mind."

It was game time. Y/n and Kelsey had done quite the job keeping everything under wraps. Most of Kelsey's Sparks teammates didn't even know she was married, let alone to y/n. The select few who did were Cameron Brink, Dearica Hamby, and Rickea Jackson. And the only reason Rickea knew was because Kelsey had accidently slipped up.

The fans knew y/n was married, only because she had praised her wife for encouraging her to get back into basketball during post game interviews. Still, nobody knew who her wife was, they just knew she had one. She never gave any details about her other than how much she loved and appreciated her.

Stepping onto the court, she shook hands with each player. Her handshake with Kelsey lingered a second longer than everyone else's but it was still a pretty basic greeting. The game started, y/n won the tip off to get her team the ball first. Chelsea passed to her and she got the layup for their first points.

The game was going smoothly, it was 56-51 by halftime. It was towards the end of the 3rd when Kelsey was diving into the paint and y/n came out of nowhere to get a nasty block on her. She went down and y/n was quick to extend a hand to her. She couldn't even make eye contact as Kelsey took her hands to get up. "Nice block." Kelsey mumbled in a sarcastic tone, walking back towards her teammates.

Y/n pursed her lips awkwardly, A'ja and Chels patting her on the back with sympathetic looks. Meanwhile Jewell was chuckling, "you sleepin' on that couch tonight."

Halfway into the 4th, it was getting a little messy. The Sparks put in Mercedes Russell. Her and y/n would get tangled up under the basket constantly, to the point both of them were frustrated with each other. But neither of them were gonna do anything about it. Yet, anyways.

It happened when y/n had the ball, near the 3 point line, she shot it for a long 2 but Mercedes swatted it away. She ran to recover it, running down the court for the layup. Y/n was right behind her, speeding up to jump and block the lay. She didn't realize her arm hit Mercedes in the back of the head as she hit the ball away. It wasn't intentional by any means but Mercedes wasn't happy about it.

Y/n shrugged off the whistle and Mercedes had gotten up to run up on her. "What the fuck is your problem?!" Y/n raised a brow, a smile finding her lips, "man, get the fuck out my face."

As she turned to walk away, Mercedes tried to follow, still going with her insults resulting in Kelsey pulling her away from getting any closer to her wife. Y/n chuckled in amusement at the insults, not affected by any of it. Even if she was, her wife clearly had her back, not allowing her teammate to lay a hand on her. "Shoot your free throws and shut the fuck up."

The game ended with Aces taking the win, but Kelsey got a triple double and y/n got her own double double so it was a good game for both of them. They were all shaking hands after the game, Kelsey sharing hugs with her former teammates and obviously her former coach Becky.

She finally got to y/n and they shared a hug, it lingered longer than the rest. "Sorry about the block." Y/n pressed a kiss to her cheek before they pulled away. "It's fine. I'll get one on you next time."

"That's adorable." Y/n laughed, turning to walk away as Kelsey scoffed in offense.

They met in the hallway after the game, and Kelsey ran over to her, tackling her into a hug. She wrapped her legs around her waist and brought her into a kiss. "You were amazing out there. I'm so proud of you."

"Me? You got a triple double, baby. We gotta celebrate you."

"I'm not opposed to being celebrated," she mumbled, a little smirk curling up her lips.

"It's deserved after that. You know I love when you defend me." She winks, pressing a kiss to her cheek as Kelsey blushed, burying her face into her neck. "You know I'll never let anybody lay their hands on my wife. I'll do anything necessary for you."

She couldn't fight her smile, "and I'll do the same."
