𝕯arlene throws her phone down on the couch and sits back comfortably, pulling her legs up to rest on the coffee table.

Kate comes walking in with two mugs of coffee and the moment she notices her daughter's scowling face and annoyed position — especially her legs on the table — she tuts with a frown.

"Dar", she shakes her head handing the younger blonde one of the mugs only to be met with an unconcerned eye roll.

"Please don't lecture me. I'm comfortable this way".

Kate sits down, raising her hands in defence.

They sip their coffees in silence, letting the warm milk wash down their throats in a welcome embrace to the cool weather slowly and gradually bidding the world goodbye to make way for sunshine filled months and beaches and mimosas.

Darlene lightly blows over the liquid before taking another sip.

She sighs contentedly as the vanilla flavoured essence fills her nostrils with a pure sense of sweet euphoria, the scent being enough to make all her worries vanish for just a few seconds.

She brings the mug down to her lap and directs her gaze to her mother who's busy observing the sky outside the window.

"So . . . . Eddie?".

Kate turns to her daughter startled by the sudden disruption of silence.

"He's okay".

Darlene huffs pulling her legs up to sit cross legged on the couch.

"You know what I mean. Are you two separating or—".

"We're not separating, Dar. We never were. It's just been a hard time. I love him, y'know", Kate frowns.

That seems to awaken some of the buried emotions she's been trying to put to grave since that night.

The flurry of ugly, ugly feelings threatens to close up her throat so that she becomes a sobbing mess right there on her mother's couch.

But she gulps it down.

"So you're both alright then? Everything's okay? Back to normal?".

Kate exhales.

"We start couple's counselling next week. I'm willing to try everything if it means we don't have to divorce. We've just been fighting anyways, every couple experiences that".

Again, emotions. So many emotions.

They're coming in groups now. They're striking each and every atom of her body, they're compelling her to let go of her composure.

But her stubbornness surpasses all their efforts.

"You're right, I suppose", she glances down at the half filled coffee mug.

"Have you . . . . have you called him?", Kate asks softly, not needing to elaborated on the 'him' for her to understand who she's referring to.

Darlene bites her lip shaking her head and gripping the mug with shaky hands as she stares down at the coffee.

"Has he . . . . called you?".

Again, she shakes her head.

Actually, that's part of what hurts the most.

She didn't mean to break up with him, she'd only flown out because she'd missed him but after that little argument in his studio she went straight to her hotel room and laid down on the bed hoping to catch a nap before dinner time.

But sleep remained a distant thought as she scrolled through her unread texts, Joe asking her if he and Teddy could crash at hers for the night because 'Teddy's getting scared of the constant shouting', her mum asking if they were still on for 'lunch tomorrow', Mia spamming her saying she was 'absolutely totally going to shit her philosophy final' and the realisation hit her.

She'd just left.

Without telling anyone.

That was not Darlene.

Darlene did not just leave the country to chase a man. Darlene did not just abandon the people she loves to go after a man. Darlene has never been spontaneous but Harry made her, he made her spontaneous.

Thoughts of him ached every pulsing corner of her heart, she longed to be with him all the damn time.

And that is not Darlene.

She would have to text Joe and tell him no, no her brothers couldn't spend a night away from that frightening house because she'd chosen to leave for a man.

That made her ashamed of herself.

There was so much to deal with and she'd just left everything to come be with Harry.

That made her angry at herself.

This isn't me. I don't just leave without an explanation.

And then she realised that Harry wasn't to blame either.

He was working. He was doing what he was supposed to, what he was expected to.

It was her that was the problem. She'd been the one to leave, the one to act on a ridiculous impulse.

Love. It was all for love.

Love was making her crazy. She couldn't recognise herself anymore.

And that scared the living hell out of her.

Harry went on with his life but where did that leave her? Would she just run after him from place to place? Would she just be his girlfriend?

No, that wasn't possible. She couldn't let herself become someone she'd be disgusted by.

She needed to sort things out.

And she couldn't do that with Harry still waiting for her.

So she had to cut the string and walk away before things got more intense.

She had to leave before the damage became irreparable.

And that's what she did.

But that doesn't mean her finger doesn't hover above his caller id every day, that she doesn't check her phone first thing in the morning hoping to be greeted with one of his silly little dad joke-esque good morning messages.

That doesn't mean she's stopped loving him.

Which is why him making no attempt to contact her and change her mind hurts so much more that it normally would.

Am I really that forgettable?

"Are you . . . . planning on calling him anytime soon?".

The stubbornness in her spoke before she did.

"No".
