Chapter 7: Beaches

This morning was absolutely horrible. It started last night when I woke up in shivers from a dream that was not my own. After that, I went back to sleep before my alarm went off so I got dressed in my Greenhouse uniform wearing two pigtails to hold up my long blonde hair. I was the first to leave and wait in the foyer. Eventually, Hayley and then Leo joined me as we all stood in an awkward silence.

"Wonder if they'll let us watch the launch from the control room", Leo said trying to start a conversation with us neither Hayley or I responded.

"Yeah, probably not", he said with a sigh.

"I hate that my family is forcing you to come to this Hayley", I tell her as she rolls her eyes at me and turns to look the other way. I bite my lip and try not to cry in front of Hayley and Leo.

"So, we're gonna be stuck in a car with Jason for, like, an hour. I mean, I hate the smell of his aftershave, you know?", he said trying to make us smile but only earned a glare from me. Leo awkwardly scratched the back of his head.

"Hey, pretty lady. Thought you could use a snack for the trip", Jackie says walking past me without a second look and handing them to Hayley. I don't blame Jackie or Hayley for hating at me. I would hate me too.

"Chocolate chip cookies. Yay!", Hayley says with a genuinely touching voice giving Jackie a hug.

"You guys are so lucky. I'd give anything to see the launch today", Emma says coming from the hallway.

"Alex refused to go. Want my ticket for free?", Hayley asks Emma as Hayley looks at me with a glare. I turn around and walk away because I know I can't stand to see Hayley mad at me and Leo, in general, the whole entire day without breaking down.

Jason grabs me by the forearms before dragging me back into the foyer while saying, "Absolutely not. Hayley's NASA's guest of honor because of her mother. And you little sis, are representing the family and the new arts program."

"This is gonna be torture", Hayley tells Jackie before she rubs her shoulders and tells Hayley,"You'll be fine. Come on"

"Car's outside", Jason yells as he pulls out his keys. Leo follows giving Hayley a confused look as to why she is acting so strange not even daring to look at me.

🌱

The car ride was horrible. I was going to sit in the front but decided that I could try and talk to Hayley in the back so let Leo sit in the front hoping it would shut him up as well. I tried everything in my power to get Hayley to talk to me from jokes to asking her questions about her life or things we used to talk about. Nothing worked so eventually I just slumped on the car window at looked at the passing cars.

We finally arrived at NASA and went inside and through security. We walk into the party they are having before the launch and a kind man walks up to us with a smile.

"Hayley!", he says giving her a small hug as Hayley says a quiet, "Hi."

He continues, "Look at you, in your Greenhouse uniform. You look so much like your mother."

"Thank you", Hayley says looking at her uniform.

"Hi. Leo Cruz", Leo says going to shake the man's hand as well.

"Captain of the Ravens. Very impressive", the man tells Leo as Leo smiles with pride.

"Jason Osmond, dean of the Greenhouse. Honor to meet you", Jason says expecting praise.

"You're Louis' kid", he says with a smile not bothering to shake Jason's hand.

"And you are?", he asks me with his hand out since I am distracted by Hayley's obvious hate for me.

"Angelina Osmond", I reply giving him my most charming smile as I shake his hand.

"Ah you are quite the prodigy in the dance world", he tells me as I give him a small smile not really excited that I am known for my dancing.

"So, how is your dad doing?", the man asks Hayley.

"He's good. Thank you for asking", Hayley tells the man with a smile.

"Good", the man states.

"So, since Hayley here is NASA's guest of honor, we were hoping for a little VIP tour around the facility", Jason says looking around the building.

"Maybe some other time. I think you can tell we're a little busy at the moment", the man tells us.

"Of course, of course", Jason mumbles.

"Tell Carter I said hi, and Alex, too. In the meantime, make yourselves at home. I promise you, this is the best view in the house", the kind man says with a smile.

"Thank you. Listen, I gotta go to the bathroom. Stay in this area. Anywhere else is restricted. I'll be right back", Jason tell us with a sneaky look before rushing away.

"Okay. Good luck in there", Leo mocks.

The director of the NASA board begins his speech, "In 1962, seven years before the first man walked on the moon, President Kennedy said, 'We set sail on this new sea because there is new knowledge to be gained.' Kennedy did not live to see his dream"

I whispered Hayley in the middle of the speech, "Hey. You okay?"

The man's speech continues as Hayley tries to not look at the NASA screen.

"However, more than 50 years later, our very own Dr. Ryan Woods inspired us to set sail on this vast ocean once again. Without her work, this satellite would not exist"

"I can't take this pity", Hayley tells me.

"Everyone loved your mother. He was really glad you came", Leo tells her trying to make her feel better.

"Look, it's nice that they made her into a symbol, but it's got nothing to do with me", Hayley says before looking away from us.

"So, at this time, when our newest satellite is ready to launch, let us all honor this brave woman who gave her life so that our country's space program could continue to progress. Ryan, if you were here with us today, I'm sure you would be as excited as I am, right after you told me how boring my speech was", the man finishes as we all applaud.

"Thank God that's over", Hayley mumbles.

"One last thing. Today, we are honored to have Dr. Ryan Woods' daughter here with us. Ladies and gentlemen, Ms. Hayley Woods", The NASDA director say as Hayley tries to hide.

"Please, no", she says before looking up with a smile.

"A toast to you and to our new satellite. Good luck to us all", the Nasa director ends.

"I can't take this anymore", Hayley says before she walks away from us. Leo and I look at each other before following after her. We see her in a glass patio and I stop at the door. Leo gives me a questioning look as to why I didn't go out but, I just stare at Hayley before I finally let out all the tears I had been holding out realizing that my friend is in pain and I had caused so much to her already that I could not help. Leo tries to wipe my tears away but, I move back.

I look at Leo before saying, "Help her she needs someone. She will listen to you."

Leo gives me a questioning look before he finally understands why Hayley is mad at the two of us. He tries again to wipe my tears but I cower into myself so he won't touch me and cause any more pain than he already has. After my rejection, he leaves and goes to Hayley sitting down next to her.

I can't hear what he says but, I see her grab his hand and Hayley lay her head on Leo's shoulder. I smile because I know that Hayley will be okay. I eventually leave the two alone and walk someplace looking at the launch as I leave the building.

Leo's Point of View

"So? Is it over?", Hayley asks me as her head is ducked down so she doesn't see the launch

"I think so. Everything seemed to go pretty well", I tell her thinking about the last launch.

"'This time,' you wanted to say", Hayley jokes with me causing me to smile.

"I can't even imagine what it was like for you to be here today. Sorry for not seeing that before", I tell her not realizing how hard it must be to relive the moment she saw her mom die.

"It's okay. I'm fine, really", Hayley says shaking her head.

"You know, I'm also sorry for being kind of a jerk to you", I tell Hayley thinking about how I just found out she liked me.

Hayley nods at me before looking up and asking, "Do you really like her?"

I don't know what to say not used to talking about my feelings, "I..I love her. Since the moment I saw her in her cute pigtails and her bright smile...I.just.knew." I tell her thinking about Angel.

"Then you should go to her. She really likes you. I know that for sure and you hurt her when you just ignored her yesterday. I did too", Hayley honestly says ashamed.

"I know. It's more than just that though. But you shouldn't be mad at her. It was my fault and she really wants to be your friend again", I tell her trying to help Angel knowing how bad she feels about the situation I put her in. Just then my louie blings, I pull it out to see Jason sent us a text to meet us back in the car in a half hour.

Hayley looks up from her louie and tells me with a smile, "Go make things right with my friend."

I give her a small kiss on the cheek before running around to look for Angel. I walk to the first floor in see her sitting on a bench in the NASA butterfly garden donated by the Greenhouse.

Angel's Point of View

I am sitting in the butterfly garden looking at a beautiful blue butterfly with black lined wings. I am sitting on a bench just admiring the garden when I feel someone sit next to me. I jump in my seat to see Leo, sit next to me with a smile.

I am about to walk away when he calls out, "I was a huge jerk. I am so sorry and I know you shouldn't forgive me but, please hear me out?"

I slowly turn around and wait for him to continue. Leo gives me a shocked look not expecting me to listen as I impatiently wait for his excuse.

Leo tells me looking down with his elbows on his knees trying to say the right words, "I don't know why I ignored you...I was scared...of losing you, of getting into an actual relationship, of being in love...I was scared that I didn't deserve you. No, I know I don't deserve you-."

I begin to slowly walk up to him as he says this and sit on the bench next to him grabbing his large hands in mine. He looks up and straight into my eyes before telling me, "I love you, Angel. I knew that the moment I met you."

I look at him and finally understand what I have been seeing in his eyes this whole time. Love. I move closer to Leo as Leo does the same before I kiss Leo. Our kiss is unlike the first and is more rushed almost as if we were trying to make up for lost time. Leo's hands frantically pull me closer by the waist as I grab his neck bringing him closer to me.

"So will you Angel be my girlfriend?", Leo asks me standing up putting his hand out for me with a hopeful smile as he before pulls away.

"I would like that", I tell him putting my hand in his as he pulls me up into a hug before we walk together with me in his arms.

"Wonder where Jason is", I ask with a light happy laugh.

"Probably got stuck in a toilet or something", Leo jokes as I laugh at the fact that it might be true.

"Makes sense", I say after my laughter dies down.

Leo and I make it to the car and Leo is about to sit in the back with me when Hayley taps his shoulder and tells him, "Sorry, Romeo, but my friend and I have a lot of catching up to do."

I quickly skip over to Hayley giving her a huge hug and a thankful smile as she returns the gesture. Leo shakes his head before getting in the front with Jason.

"So tell me everything", Hayley says before we silently gossip and giggle in the back of Jason's car the whole ride back. When we finally get out of the car, Leo and I walk hand in hand while Hayley goes ahead to talk with Max.

🌱

Later that night in the Greenhouse, I am watching tv with Hayley when I feel somebody wrap their arms around me.

"Hey, listen to this. It is Prince on the piano", I hear somebody say from behind me as I turn to see Leo put headphones on my ears. I begin to listen to a beautiful piano solo causing me to hum along with it.

"I thought he played guitar?", I ask Leo, who is climbing over the couch to sit, confused by this new found information.

"It's prince, baby, he can play anything", Leo says putting one arm around me before I gave him a headphone so we can both hear the music.

"NASA confirms communication with the satellite has been cut off", the lady on the news says as Leo and I take off the headphones so we can hear.

"Don't change the channel", Leo tell Becca who is about to grab the remote.

"Who cares about a missing satellite?", Becca carelessly asks.

"Sources at NASA confirm", the anchor continues as I tell Becca, "That satellite was launched in honor of Hayley's mom."

"Oh. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean that", Becca begins before Hayley cuts her off with, "It's okay, Becca."

I give Hayley a hug as we continue to listen to the news.
