Chapter 8

"So let me get this straight. Kyle is going to be attending some school in California as a human to spy on some kid who happens to be the General's son and Zoey is out there destroying half this establishment out of anger because she can't go on this mission?"

I nodded. "Yup. That's about it."

Des whistled. "Good luck Dr. Jarson. Zoey seems pretty upset."

Dr. Jarson sighed. "Someone go get her before she kills one of my students."

Rob got up from his seat in Dr. Jarsons office. "I'll get her."

He left without waiting for a reply. I continued to lean on my seat, feet on the table in front of me. "So Dr. J, when do I go to this school."

Dr. Jarson looked at me, eye brows raised. "Tomorrow."

I sighed. "So I have one day to be myself before I go and lower my standards and pretend to be as useless as the humans."

Des chuckled. "I feel bad for you man. I can't imagine how horrible it is to live among them."

I glared at Des. "I'm not going to live there."

"But you'll be going to school with them."

"What can I say? I'm willing to sacrifice myself for the greater good. I am such a good person."

Des rolled his eyes. "You're also very modest."

"I'm glad you noticed."

Before anyone could say anything, Zoey barged into the room followed closely by Rob.

"So have you all realized that Kyle will blow our one chance to find this secret place unless we go with him?" Zoey said, arms crossed while tapping her foot.

I chuckled. "You have so much faith in me."

"Dr. Jarson, I need to go with him." Zoey said, ignoring me.

"Awwwww Zo. I'll miss you too."

"Kyle stay out of it."

I raised my hands up, yawning. "I'm bored ok. I wanna go sleep or hack into some of your files and reread everything."

I looked at the outraged faces of my 'team mates' and continued. "The point is this argument is pointless. I'll go on my own and Zo you stay here."

"Why does he get to go and I don't?"

"I already told you, Zoey. You need to finish your education. You need to finish school." Dr. Jarson explained. "Kyle doesn't need to go to school or learn anything."

"Cause I'm the best." I added.

"I know enough! Haven't I proven myself over the years? I'm tired of doing absolutely nothing!" Zoey argued, her face flushed.

"That's not true, you always go on missions and save Zerians and collect information that proves to be useful." Dr. Jarson replied.

"That's not the point! This isn't even a difficult mission! How hard can it be to spy on some stupid human boy and get information from him?!" Zoey yelled.

Dr. Jarson gave Zoey a deadly look which made her shrink a little and shut her mouth. "Listen here. The generals son isn't like any other human. He was probably raised being aware of us. He was enrolled in the school in the middle of the year which means he was probably sent to do something. We need to find out what that something is as well as find out where the general is keeping his army and also the Zerians he has locked up."

"I say we bring the kid here and torture him into telling us." I said

I noticed Rob flinch and gave him a confused look. Why was he so sensitive? Especially towards them.

"Kyle, we aren't savages. And plus, all Defenders have trained themselves. They'll kill themselves before we get anything out of them." Dr. Jarson said.

"How do you know?" I asked.

No one replied and I knew that they've tried torturing someone.

Trying to break the silence that had suddenly descended, I said. "I'm going to go search up this school. Do I have to take some sort of exam?"

Dr. Jarson shook his head. "No you don't. I've already signed you in and you've been accepted. Do NOT show your true self. Don't show how fast and smart you truly are, how strong and advanced you are. In other words, just be human."

I grunted in reply before getting up from my seat. "Well, let me go enjoy my last day of being my true great self."

I heard Zoey mutter something under her breath. I caught the words 'annoying' and 'good riddance'.

"Don't worry Zo, I won't forget you and your love."

Before she could yell at me, I left.

I walked to my room and once I was inside, I opened my laptop. It was time I did a little research.

**********

It took me 20 minutes to realize how stupid I had to be in order to fit in. And it was agonizing. Humans were so......so dumb and fragile. What was wrong with them?

What was wrong with us? How can they hunt US down?

If it weren't for the Eliminators, they wouldn't stand a chance.

Sighing, I got up. Looking at the time on my watch I realized it was pretty late. I knew Des and Zoey would be in the training room at this time along with their class mates. So I decided to join them.

As I made my way to the training area, I found Mark.

"Hey kid, what are you doing up this late?"

Marks eyes beamed when he spotted me. "Hi Kyle! I was just going to my room. My sister gave me a new assignment, hacking into these FBI files and find out a few things about this criminal!"

"How old are you?"

"I'm 8."

I nodded. "And you're going to hack into FBI files?"

Mark nodded. "Why not?"

"You seem a little young to do that, don't you think?"

Mark shook his head. "Des was 10 when he hacked into FBI files. I can do it!"

I chuckled. "I like your confidence kid."

Marks eyes shone from the praise. "I wanna be just like you."

I gave him a small smile. "You might just be."

Just then, Macy walked up to us, eye brows raised. "Mark, shouldn't you be in your room?"

Mark glared at his sister. "I was talking to Kyle."

"I'm sure Kyle has somewhere to be. Now go along."

Mark pouted. "Fine. I'll see you around Kyle!"

"Ya sure thing kid."

And with that he hurried along as I chuckled.

"I don't know why I feel uncomfortable when you talk to my brother."

Facing Macy, I smirked. "And why is that?"

Macy didn't face me. "Mark is sensitive. And you, you are a jerk. But for some reason he looks up to you. As if you were his hero"

"Duh, cause I'm the best."

Macy shook her head. "You have potential and skills but you lack one thing a hero needs."

"Oh really. And what is that?"

"A heart."

I ignored the sinking feeling in my guts.

"You see Macy, if I actually cared about your opinion, that would have hurt but I don't because you are nothing other than a weak Zerian who wishes to be someone in this world but is actually a nobody. Don't try to bring me down, Macy. It won't work and it won't help you feel better about yourself."

Macy glared at me. "You just can't handle the truth. And I don't bring others down to make myself feel better."

I barked a laugh, shaking my head. "Let me tell you Macy, I know a lot about you, more than you think I know. Out of politeness, I've tried to be civil but listen here and listen good, don't mess with me or else you will regret it."

I wasn't sure how we came down to this but ever since Macy joined this school, she has been constantly trying to insult me and put me down.

I didn't care.

Macy started to walk away and I called after her. "You know what they say, when you're a nobody, nobody actually cares about you."

I think I made her cry.

I didn't care at all.

*********

I was ready. But I was not happy. At all

Staring up at the school building, I realized that this was going to be bad. I was going to get irritated and I was going to insult someone. I was going to get irritated and blow up my cover.

I laughed and Dr. Jarson glanced at me, giving me a questioning look.

"Why are you laughing?"

"Oh I was just thinking how I would blow up my cover which made me laugh. For a second there I forgot how great I am."

Des silently laughed. He was the only one who bothered to come.

"Well here you are Kyle, your new school."

I studied the single building that stretched out for miles on either sides. It was a light brown color, surrounded with grass and trees.

It looked boring.

"Well, good luck." Des said as a bell rang.

The warning bell.

I took a deep breath and smirked. "Tell Zo I'll see her at dinner and not to miss me."

I walked away, ignoring Dr. Jarson's good luck and Des's laughter. I didn't need luck.

Once I entered the building, it was like everyone's eyes were on me.

One thing about this school was that everyone grew up together. Everyone knew one another so a random kid transferring in the middle of the school year was news. Especially since I was the second kid to enter randomly.

The first being my target.

As I made my way towards my locker, I smirked.

"Yes yes, I know I'm good looking but it's rude to stare."

That got everyone a little shocked. People turned their heads away while others just gaped.

Humans are so......

Reaching my locker, I heard the bell ring again. Looks like I'll be late to class. I didn't care.

I was angry. I didn't want to be here. I just wanted to find the General and kill him. No that wasn't right. I wanted him to suffer first. Death wouldn't do him justice.

Then I want to torture the one who killed my sister.

I grabbed my English text book and slowly made my way to class. I was stopped my an authoritative voice.

"And who might you be?"

Turning around, I looked at the principle. Mr. Devon.

"I am the new student."

"Were you not informed to come see me in my office first?" Mr. Devon asked, a small friendly smile on his face.

"Must have slipped my mind. My bad."

"It's fine. You must be Kyle."

"That I am."

"Well. it's great to have you here. I hope you enjoy it."

I nodded, not bothering to reply. If I opened my mouth, an insult was the first thing that would come out.

"Did you get your schedule?"

I nodded.

"You don't talk much, do you?"

I wanted to roll my eyes.

"You don't need to be shy here Kyle, we are all friends."

Oh. My. Gosh. Can he stop talking before I punch him.

"I'm late for class." I stated.

"Oh my bad my bad, here let me write you a note so you don't get in trouble."

"No need for that, I'll manage."

Mr. Devon frowned. "Are you sure?"

"Positive."

"Well, ok then." I could tell he was confused. Of course he was. Humans.

I didn't bother replying. I walked away.

I didn't have trouble finding my class. I knew this place well enough after having researched it.

Knocking was for wimps. I just opened the door.

I ignored the stares and looked at my teacher.

And I had to say it. "I wasn't aware that English was being taught by a corpse."

It was too far, yes. But I have never met someone so old. Her hair was pulled up in a bun, wisps of grey hair loose. Her body was tiny and it looked fragile.

Her face, full of wrinkles was currently giving me a deadly look. I've never seen a human give such a glare.

"Who are you?" she demanded.

"I'm Kyle, the new kid."

"You're late."

"Yes, that much is pretty obvious."

The teacher looked at me frowning, studying me. I smirked.

"You have no respect."

"Is it a habit of yours, stating the obvious?"

"Get out of my class."

I rolled my eyes. "Ok ok. I'm sorry. It's my first day and I'm nervous."

I internally groaned. I was never nervous.

The teacher slowly nodded her head. "I have gathered a lot about you at this moment."

I frowned. I bit my lips before I could send another insult in her direction.

"Sit down." She ordered.

I quickly went to the only available seat which was next to a boy. Ignoring everyone's bewildered expressions, I took my seat.

"Delilah, where were we?" the teacher asked.

I scoffed. Of course she forgot.

The girl, Delilah cleared her throat. "Ummm you were about to tell us our assignments for next week."

The teacher stared at the girl, her frown deepening. "Are you sure? I think I already told you what it was."

"No you didn't, ma'am."

"Maybe you were not paying attention. That is not my fault. I'm sure I told you guys."

"Actually, you didn't." A boy said.

She looked at him for three seconds. "I don't remember asking you. Do not talk back to me."

Was this teacher....sane.

No one said anything to her and she sighed. "This class has a big problem. You were made to believe you guys are the best."

A few kids snickered while others just rolled their eyes. This showed me that she probably said stuff like this all the time.

I raised my hand and she looked at me. "Yes Kyle."

"I do not believe I am the best, I know I am."

The teacher shook her head. "This is why the world will be doomed in the future."

I heard a few giggles but ignored it. "Mrs....." I trailed off.

"Mrs Gretchen." she supplied.

I laughed. I couldn't help it.

"Perfect name. Sounds like something you would call a witch."

The class gasped as Mrs. Gretchen stared at me. "Get out of my class Kyle."

I shrugged. "But I'm comfortable."

She raised a single finger. "Do not talk back to me."

"But I'm not. I was just stating facts."

"You have absolutely no manners. How did your parents raise you?"

I decided to ignore the bang I felt in my chest.

I chuckled. "My parents are actually dead."

The class was silent. And I knew for certain that they thought I was heartless. Who chuckled while stating that their parents were gone?

Mrs. Gretchen cleared her throat and decided to ignore me for the rest of the class. I scoffed.

I didn't need pity.

The rest of the class went by without anything interesting happening. I didn't bother paying attention and after my English class, I had math.

And of course, I didn't pay attention then either.

But it was half way through maths when I finally saw him.

The teacher was talking about Pythagoras Theorem when there was a knock on the door and a boy entered.

What caught my eyes first was his hair. It was a bright red that looked like angry flames dancing on his head.

And I couldn't miss the way he walked. It was with confidence and ease like he knew the world was his yet he didn't seem cocky.

The math teacher didn't even spare him a glance. "Nice of you to finally join us."

"The pleasure is all mine." He replied, a little sarcastic.

"I was informed you'd be late now please hurry up and take your seat."

I saw him carefully walk towards a seat that was two seats across from mine.

He sat down and didn't bother taking out a book. He just stared out the window, a small frown in place.

I continued to look at him, analyzing his personality. And I was almost certain that it was him.

He turned around and caught me staring at him. As his eyes narrowed, I smirked. I could tell he was confused. But that was only because I'm good at reading body language. He can hide it well.

And I knew for certain that he was the general's son.

It's nice to finally meet you in person, Roy. I can't wait to see what you got. And I can't wait to kill you.

Let the games begin.
