Chapter 2
I had spotted the door from inside the car. Walking towards it, I reconsidered my decisions.
It's not like I needed their help.
Biting my lips, I walked up to the door and clicked on the bell. A few minutes later someone answered.
The 17 year old boy was tall with light brown eyes that held curiosity in them. Flipping his messy brown hair aside, he said.
"You must be Kyle."
I gave him a critical look knowing it would make him uncomfortable. And it did. Des didn't like being criticized.
As he shifted from foot to foot, I asked the question he was expecting. "What's your name?"
"I'm Des." he replied, holding his hands out for me to shake. "Nice to meet you."
I smirked. Ignoring his out stretched hand, I said. "And I assume you're supposed to be taking me somewhere."
Frowning, Des dropped his hands. "Um ya. Ok. Well right this way." he replied, turning away.
We entered a long hall way which was completely white with no windows or decorations of any kind. Just white, plain walls.
But what most people weren't aware off were the hidden cameras. I knew they were being controlled by staff members to see who went in and out.
At the end of the hall was an elevator. Des led me towards it. After getting inside, he pushed the number 5. But instead of going up, we went down.
"I know it's weird that the elevators go down but since the facility is built underground, the number 1 is actually one floor below and 5 is five floors below. Understand?" Des explained with a patient, friendly smile on his face.
I had a feeling that Des usually showed the new 'students' around.
"Of course I understand. What I don't understand is why we are going to the 5th floor where the class rooms are located instead of the office." I replied.
Des had a startled look on his face. "Have you been here before?" he asked as the elevator doors opened.
I stepped out of the elevator and Des followed. "Nope."
"Then how do you know so much about this place?"
"Now, I wouldn't say I know so much." I replied as I looked at the long hallway that seemed to stretch for miles with class rooms on either sides.
"So which room am I supposed to be meeting the director in?" I asked.
"Oh. Room 5B. Right over here." he replied, leading me to the class room labeled 5B on the door.
"Well I should get going now. I've already missed enough classes as it is. If you need anything, I'll be on the 4th floor. Don't be hesitant to ask for anything." Des said with a smile.
"Oh you'll be in the training area. Great. And you shouldn't miss too many lessons. This is your last year." I said nonchalantly, opening the door.
At this, Des frowned. "I don't remember telling you that."
"Oh, you didn't?" I replied, a small smirk in place. "Lucky guess then huh."
Without waiting for a reply, I got in the class room and shut the door, not bothering to see the look of shock on Des's face.
"You shouldn't scare my students like that. It's highly disrespectful."
I turned towards the owner of the voice who was sitting on the teachers desk.
"Hello Dr. Jarson." I said, walking towards him.
He was a tall man in his middle age but you could never have guessed with his muscular physique. Dr. Jarson was an intimidating man who gave the impression of someone who would go as far as murdering someone to get what he wanted.
He would do exactly that.
"Kyle. How have you been, my son?"
Sitting down on one of the chairs, I put my feet on the desk. "You know doctor, I don't like exchanging pleasantries. I just don't have the time."
Dr. Jarson smiled. "Haven't your parents taught you manners?"
I gave him a cold smile. "My parents are dead."
"Oh my. I'm so sorry. It completely slipped my mind." he replied, feigning remorse.
"I'm sure it did."
"They were great Zerians, your parents. What a shame they were killed."
"Life goes on, isn't that right Jarson."
His left eye twitched, a sign of irritation for calling him Jarson.
"I'm sorry about your sister."
I clenched my jaws as he continued. "She was a talented young girl. We could have improved those talents here and used her."
I felt a small fire start to burn inside of me. Anger.
"Sadly there would have been nothing here you could teach her." I replied, a cold smile in place. He flinched, his nostrils flaring with anger.
Everything was a game with Dr. Jarson. In order to win, you must be in control of yourself, show no weakness.
I won this round
"Let's cut to the chase then."
"Finally." I interrupted him.
"Your parents were the best Zerians of our generation and it was our greatest loss, losing them. But luckily we had you and your sister. I've heard even seen some of the great things you guys have accomplished."
"As you know, Zerians have been here for a very long time." he continued. "We are smarter, faster and more advanced than humans. What we are, how we came to be, no one knows."
Dr. Jarson stood up from his seat and walked behind me. I didn't bother turning towards him.
"Over time, we were discovered. Humans realized that we weren't like them. That even though we were humans, we were better. So they made a secret organization and started haunting us down, one by one."
I interrupted. "I'm not here for you to tell me what I already know."
Dr. Jarson ignored me. "The reason I built this school was to help kids, like yourself, improve their talents. Zerians naturally stand out. We attract attention with our greatness. We can develop these talents into something even greater. And this is where I come in. I built this school to train Zerians."
He walked in front of me, hands placed on the desk on either side of my feet.
"We are no longer safe. We need to fight for our lives. We cannot allow our kind to go extinct." Dr. Jarson said, his voice low and dangerous.
I could tell this speech had been rehearsed and said multiple times before. I knew what was expected of me, to be marveled and feel honored to be a Zerian.
"Can you get to the point."
I knew I was pushing it but I didn't care. He wouldn't hurt me. He needed me.
"The point is, Kyle." He started, saying my name with distaste. "we are dying. And we need to stop these humans. I wanted your help and your sisters' but for some reason you refused to help us and now your sister has paid the price for your foolishness."
I knew he wanted me to be angry. I was angry but I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of knowing that he had hit a nerve.
"So far you've been stating facts. I'm starting to regret coming. Maybe I was right, this was a waste of my time." I said, getting up.
'Kyle, we are going to destroy the humans."
"All of them?"
"Of course not. Just the Defenders."
"And how do you plan on doing that?"
He looked me in the eyes and said.
"With your help."
