Chapter 10
"You are very disrespectful and need to be taught a lesson. I have never in all my life met someone as horrid as you."
I smirked. "Are you sure you've never met someone as bad as me, Mrs Gretchen? You seem quite old."
Mrs Gretchen gave me the dirties look. "Get out of my class. I'll see you in detention."
I winked. "Can't wait." I left the class room holding back laughter. That teacher truly amuses me. She thinks I will show up to detention.
Shaking my head, I made my way to my locker to get a few things when I spotted a small commotion.
Frowning, I stopped and looked as a boy pushed another boy down.
I rolled my eyes as I stared at a typical bully who went by the name Ken. And his victim, Steve, with his messy brown hair and glasses.
"So you won't do my homework huh?" Ken said.
How cliche.
Steve started stuttering, his face flushed. "I-I'm busy."
"Do I look like I care?" Ken demanded as Steve got up.
Ken pushed him back down and this time all the paper in Steve's hand scattered.
Before Ken could yell at Steve, someone came between them and stood tall and firm.
"That wasn't very nice." Maxwell said.
Ken looked down at her and smirked. "Hey there beautiful."
Maxwell didn't react. "You shouldn't have done that."
"Aww come on Max, you know I was just playing around."
Maxwell shook her head. She whispered so no one could hear her except Ken. But I could hear. Obviously.
"Just leave him alone ok. Please."
Ken looked at Steve then back at Max. "Whatever." He said before walking away.
Everyone who was watching started to slowly walk away as Maxwell went on her knees and started helping Steve collect his papers.
Now as weird as it sounds, I couldn't stop looking at Max. The way she picked up those papers so elegantly and with care. As if papers deserved to be cared for.
I chuckled as Steve blushed. "Thanks Max."
Maxwell smiled. "You don't need to thank me." She replied.
Once Steve left, I walked up to Maxwell. "That was nice."
Max looked at me and smiled. "Hi there."
"I repeat. That was nice."
She frowned. "What was?"
"What you did back there."
At this Max looked away, opening her locker. "Didn't do anything. Anyway, how do you like it here so far?"
I smiled slightly as her face turned a little shade of red.
I shrugged. "I got detention."
Max chuckled. "Already."
"Yup. You know what's funny?" I asked.
She closed her locker and looked at me, her eyes shinning bright and a slight smile on her face. "What?"
"The teachers think I will actually show up to detention."
Maxwell shook her head. "Don't skip detention."
I rolled my eyes. "I have important things to do with my life."
"Like what?" She asked, a slight tilt to her head.
"Like none of your business."
Her smile flattered a little and a look of hurt crossed her face before she looked like her usual self.
And for the first time ever, I felt something.
Guilt.
"You're right. Sorry, I was just curious. But you know what they say, curiosity killed the cat." She replied.
Before I could even think of a reply, she said. "I'll see you around."
**********
I was sitting in the cafeteria when Max joined me. I was a little surprised since I expected her to be mad at me for what I said earlier.
Aren't girls supposed to be all moody and angry?
Max wasn't.
"Hi Kyle, mind if I join you?"
I shrugged. "I don't mind."
There was silence as we both ate our lunch, lost in our thoughts. That's when I spotted Roy.
"Hey, Max."
She looked at me. "Ya?"
"What do you know about Roy?" I said, gesturing to where he was sitting alone.
Max tilted her head slightly to the side before replying. "Not much really. He joined a couple weeks ago. He doesn't really talk to anyone."
"No friends? Acquaintances? Siblings?"
"Not that I know of."
I nodded my head.
"Why don't you go ask him?"
I looked at Max, my eyes brows raised. "What do you mean?"
"Go talk to him."
"Why would I do that?"
"I don't know, so he can have a friend. He looks lonely."
At first, I thought she was kidding. Who even said things like that!
"Are you serious!" I exclaimed
She frowned. "Ya."
And then it hit me.
"You're a genius." I said.
Max looked a little surprised before chuckling. "If I remember correctly, you thought I was pretty dumb."
I chuckled, getting up from my seat. "I'll be right back, let me talk to Roy."
Max gave me a bright smile. "Take your time."
It was simple. I could pretend to be his friend making it easier to spy on him.
As I walked towards his table, he looked up at me. He gave me a lazy smile, his gaze never flattering.
I sat down opposite to him.
"I'm Kyle."
Roy looked at me before he leaned forward and stretched his hands to shake.
"Roy."
I took his hands. Now naturally, as a Zerian, my grip is strong so I always make sure to go easy on humans.
Roy's grip was not human.
I looked at him as his eyes widened slightly.
An awkward pause descended until I noticed we were just sitting there, hand in hand.
Clearing my throat, I let go. "Strong grip you got there."
Roy shrugged. "My dad made sure to train me very well."
"How come?"
Roy gave me a slight smirk. "Who knows."
Silence.
"Well this was a complete waste of my time. I'll see you around then." I said, getting up.
My amazing skill at making new friends truly amazes me.
Roy didn't bother replying. He went back to eating his lunch and I went back to Max.
"How'd it go?" She asked as I sat down.
I shrugged. "He seems cowardly."
Max frowned. "What could he have done to make you say something like that? You don't even know the kid."
I smirked. "I meant he seems nice."
********
"I met Roy today."
Des clapped his hands once in excitement. "And?"
"He had a strong grip."
Des frowned. "What?"
"He had a strong grip. Too strong to be human."
Des shook his head. "Wait, I don't understand. Are you saying he isn't human?"
I shrugged. "I'm saying he is pretty strong and we shouldn't underestimate him."
Des nodded. "Ya I know especially after what I found today."
"What did you find?"
"Lets wait for Zoey and Rob. They'll be here any minute now."
I rolled my eyes. "Great, a feast in my room."
Des smiled. "I was actually thinking of having a slumber party, you know? Like we can all bring sleeping bags and sleep here since your room is bigger than ours and we ca-"
I interrupted him. "Des, you should really stop saying things that make me wanna punch you."
Des chuckled. "I can feel the love."
"I'm sure you can."
"Are you guys done bonding?"
I sighed as Zoey walked into my room. "What happened to knocking?"
Zoey shrugged. Rob was behind her, standing with his arms crossed, in his usual attire. All black, completely covering every inch of his skin.
"Hey emo boy."
Zoey glared at me. "What's your problem?"
I frowned. "Nothing. What's yours?"
"Why do you have to be so rude?"
"Why don't you mind your own business? I don't see Robert complaining."
"I don't care. Show him some respect or get out."
"This is actually my room so you can leave."
"Ok ok. Let's all calm down, shall we." Des said.
"Whatever." Zoey muttered.
I rolled me eyes. "Girls and their hormones, they always have to complicate things and be angry. Except for Max."
"Who the heck is Max?" Zoey asked.
"Some girl at school." I replied.
Zoey raised an eye brow. "You have a human friend?" She asked, looking repulsed.
I scoffed "Of course not."
"Anyway." Des interrupted. "I found something on the Internet. About Roy and this will assure you, Kyle, that Roy is indeed human."
Zoey frowned. "Wait, what?"
"Kyle here says that Roy has an inhuman grip."
"Humans can be strong too." Rob said, leaning against the door frame, arms still crossed.
"I never said he wasn't human, I just said his grip was too strong and we shouldn't underestimate him. And bravo! You spoke without being addressed too." I said sarcastically.
Rob shrugged.
Des rolled his eyes, exasperated. "Anywaaaayyyy, as I was saying, I found something."
"We understand that. Now can you show us what it is or get out. I need to sleep. I've dealt with too much imbecility for a day."
Des ignored me and opened my laptop.
"Excuse me but that isn't yours." I said.
Des nodded. "I know but Dr. Jarson had to borrow my laptop so I sent you the information."
"Well I would appreciate it if you handed me back the laptop. It is password protected."
"I'm sure I can hack into it." Des said.
I smirked. "Go ahead."
"Really?" Des asked.
I stretched my hands and placed them behind my head. "Knock yourself out."
It took him two minutes to fall into my trap.
"Oh my gosh I think I did i-" before he could finish his sentence, there was a small explosion.
Zoey was first to react. "Des!" she yelled, as smoke surrounded him.
Rob quickly went up to him and snatched the laptop, throwing it away. Luckily I managed to grab it, laughing.
As the smoke cleared, we saw Des. His face was covered in ash and his hair was standing.
I laughed harder at his face expression.
"That wasn't funny." Zoey exclaimed.
"I-it w-wa-was hilarious." I said, trying to catch my breath.
Rob shook his head silently before returning to his position by the door.
Zoey looked at Des. "Are you ok?"
Des shook his head. "Tha-that was......AWESOME!"
Zoey looked at him, bewildered as I smirked.
"I completely fell for that trap. It was designed so perfectly."
"Duh, I designed it."
"Respect bro." He said, putting up his fist for me to bump.
"I'm not your bro." I said. Nevertheless, I gave him a fist bump.
"Ugh, boys." Zoey said. "Can you hurry up and show us what you found out about Roy please?"
I tapped in my password and Des opened what he needed to show us.
"So I was scrolling around the Internet, going through things I shouldn't be going through when I stumbled on a page. It was talking about a bombing in Boston. It took out over a hundred people."
He typed a few more things and opened a page that showed devastation. That was the only way I could describe it.
"So I went ahead and researched more about it and found something curious. You see, the bomb was said to have been left behind by some terrorist group called The Kaltir but the thing is the same time the bomb went off, The Kaltir were spotted in China, selling illegal weapons. So I got suspicious and looked into it."
"That is weird. What did you find?" Zoey asked.
"Well the rest is classified information but they framed the terrorist group. It was actually someone powerful who set off the bomb for a "bigger" purpose. And then it hit me. They bombed The Billionaires Hotel."
Zoeys eyes went wide. "What!?"
"How come we didn't know about this?" Rob asked.
Des shrugged. "I don't know."
"You guys didn't know?" I asked.
"You knew?" Zoey exclaimed.
"Obviously. The Billionaires Hotel is one of the most well known hideout for Zerians. It's crawling with the best of the best. It was one of the most devastating losses we've ever had."
Zoey shook her head. "I had no idea." She whispered.
Des shrugged. "None of us did. I wonder why Dr. Jarson didn't say anything."
There was silence until Des cleared his throat and went on.
"So anyway, I went ahead and did some investigation when I stumbled upon an FBI agent who also works for the Defenders. And I found a conversation he had with someone."
He went through a few things and then clicked play.
There was background noise and some static.
And then a voice, deep and mature.
"Have you planted those bombs yet?"
"Ya they're set."
Roy.
"Did the General give the go ahead?"
"Ya he did. Blow up the place in three minutes." Roy said.
"Alright sir."
The line went dead.
"That was actually him. He sounds exactly like that in person. A little different but it's him." I confirmed.
Des nodded. "So they killed the Zerians and blamed it on a terrorist attack."
"How does this prove that he is human?" I asked.
"Well he isn't a Zerian and he was talking to someone who works for a Defender and it sure sounded like he was apart of the team and only humans can be Defenders."
I nodded. "Ya ok, he is human. And he seems dangerous."
Zoey scoffed. "Too bad he is messing with the baddest Zerians alive. He won't know what hit him."
"Humans are so dull." Des said.
I nodded my head. "And they are such cowards."
*********
"Kyle, can you please stop that. You are distracting the class."
I sighed and looked at my biology teacher. "But I'm bored. Are we seriously learning about-" I started, squinting at the board. "The brain."
The teacher, Mr. Dean, sighed. "Yes, we are learning about the brain."
"But why? Shouldn't everyone here already know about this?"
"Not everyone is a genius like you." A boy scoffed from behind.
I turned around and gave him a smirked. "I'm glad you noticed. The first step into recovering from being dumb is admitting you are. Maybe now you can actually learn how to spell your name right." I said, glancing at his book.
He glared at me before looking down. Realization crossed his face as he saw he spelt his own name wrong.
He cleared his throat and tried to play it cool. "This is how you spell my name."
"Ya because last time I checked, Thomas was spelt without an s.
The boy shut up. I turned back around and glanced at Max. Unlike everyone else in the class, she wasn't looking at me but was writing something. Nevertheless I saw her smile slightly and shake her head.
Before the teacher could say anything, the door opened and Mrs Gretchen walked in.
"Oh my, you can walk?!" I exclaimed. A few kids chuckled as Mrs Gretchen glared at me.
"Why weren't you at detention?"
I rolled my eyes. "Because I was at home."
"Don't try to be sassy with me boy, I'm serious."
"I am too. I was at home searching about this terrorist group that's trying to get rid of these aliens."
Everyone started laughing. They are so dumb.
Mrs Gretchen said. "Stop with this nonsense."
"But it's true."
"Kyle, show up to detention or else."
"Or else what?"
She didn't reply. "Don't test me boy." She left without waiting for a reply.
The biology teacher stared at me before shaking his head. "Everyone grab a partner and do the work on page 231." he said before muttering Teenagers.
"Humans." I muttered back as I waved Max over.
"Wanna be my partner?" I asked.
"Well I'm flattered." She replied, sitting down.
"Don't be, you're just the only one I can tolerate. Doesn't mean I like you."
She rolled her eyes. "And here I thought you loved me."
I chuckled. We started our work and it was agonizing. These questions were so.....so simple that it physically pained me.
I answered all the questions without referring to the book.
"Are you positive about these answers?" Max asked. "Shouldn't we check if we're correct?"
"Go give him the paper. I'm positive it's all correct."
Max looked at me before getting up and handing the teacher our work. "Done already?" he asked.
Max nodded. "Yup."
"Do you want to check your answers?"
Max shook her head before joining me again.
"You're pretty smart."
I shrugged. "I know."
But sadly I had to downplay it.
"And so modest."
"It's one of my best qualities, I know."
She chuckled, shaking her head. A strand of her hair fell loose and I had the urge to put it behind her ear.
What
The
Hell
Luckily, she did it herself. I must have been looking at her funny because she said. "What? Is there something on my face?"
I shook my head. "Um-no nothing."
Did I just stutter?
"Are you ok, Kyle?"
"What kind of question is that, of course I'm ok"
She frowned. "You're acting different, that's all."
I scoffed. "Ya because you know me so well."
"I never said I did."
"Well you sure think you know everything."
At this, she shook her head, a look of absolute confusion on her face. "Ok what just happened? I never said I know everything."
"Humans are so stupid!"
"You are also human!"
"And I'm ashamed to be one."
"Why do you hate our species so much?"
"We are cowards. We betray people for our own benefits. We destroy when we don't understand."
There was complete silence as Max stared at me, her head slightly tilted.
She nodded. "I see what you mean."
"Exactly."
"But you're wrong."
Eye brows raised, I looked at her. "Oh really."
She nodded. "Not all humans are cowards."
I shook my head. "You're so naive."
She shrugged. She didn't bother replying but went back to writing instead.
She knew I would just yell at her. She knew I would just fight with her.
So she didn't say anything.
And truthfully, I was thankful for that.
