Tormented Man
Gracie stood in the doorway a bit longer than she had intended. He looked the complete opposite of his pictures. The ones sitting neatly on the shelf behind Yoongi's desk in his office. Those pictures displayed a happy young man smiling brightly back at you. One so full of life... the one before her now much like an empty shell. He didn't even budge when the door opened.
A soft voice met her ears once she was fully inside. He was singing. A sweet beautifully sad melody that would make your heart break.
The door clicked shut and silence engulfed the room once more. Jimin didn't move, he stayed staring at the wall.
"Jimin?" Gracie's voice came out in a whisper. His head turned eerily slow. His eyes... she'd never forget those hollowed out black orbs.
"Do I know you?"
"I—uh. Well no. But I know your friend, Yoongi."
"Yoongi?"
His expression never changed when she mentioned Yoongi's name. He continued to stare at her blankly.
"I don't know anyone named Yoongi."
"Oh?"
"Who are they?" He tilted his head to the side, his blonde hair falling into his eyes.
"Well he's your—"
Her sentence was cut off by the door slamming open hitting the wall.
"Do not finish that sentence!" Yoongi snapped, grabbing her by the wrist and pulling her out into the dark hallway. Gracie watched as the door pulled closed, Jimin turned back toward the wall, starting up
his sad song again.
"Y/N!" Yoongi growled, his eyes narrowed into slits. Gracie took a step back.
"Why do you keep him trapped here? Why doesn't he know who you are?"
"Guilt...mostly."
Gracie stared at Yoongi, his demeanor changing from pissed off to a man filled with remorse.
"Guilt for what?"
"I— stole his life from him."
"He's still alive—" Gracie started. He narrowed his eyes at her.
"You call that alive? He's a shell that used to hold the most vibrant soul I ever met."
"What happened?"
Yoongi slid down the wall, head in his hands.
"He was always the adventurous type. Always trying new things. I on the other hand am not so. But oftentimes I found myself tagging along just to be near him."
Gracie sat down beside him listening to him talk. Not quite understanding how the way Jimin is now is his fault.
"His fiancé hated how much time Jimin spent with me and she would blow up his phone anytime we were together. I had no intention of causing strife between them. I just wanted to hang out with him, ya know."
Yoongi frowned at her. Gracie could see the tears filling his eyes. A glassy haze over his dark brown eyes. The hurt was evident with every second she peered into them.
"What happened?" She pried, gently. He sighed, looking down at the tiles on the floor.
"He always wanted to know what it felt like to fly..."
He stared at her with tears streaming down his pale face. She could tell that he was haunted by a memory. One that had a devastating ending.
"Base jumping is the closest he could get to flying. He didn't want to jump from a plane. He didn't want the parachute. He didn't want to hang glide either. Nothing compared to the reviews he read about BASE jumping."
A sense of unease filled her stomach. She wasn't sure she wanted to hear the rest. Yoongi balled his fists, anger evident on his face.
"She had to come too."
He ground his teeth, swallowing hard as he continued.
"We talked the whole way there while she brooded in silence, casting me dirty looks with every second that passed by. When we pulled up to the bridge something didn't feel right anymore."
Yoongi stopped, rubbing his hands along his jeans, his bottom lip quivered as more tears fell.
"She helped him with his suit—-"
"Yoongi— did she do something?"
Quickly he stood up, raking his hands through his hair. Gracie got up and wrapped her arms around him.
"I— shouldn't have let him jump." He sobbed uncontrollably. After all this time she had known him. Why hadn't he told her what had really happened?
"Where is she now?"
"I— I don't know..."
"They didn't arrest her?"
Yoongi sniffles, pulling away from her.
"I had no proof. I about threw myself off the bridge when he crashed into the side of the cliff. Had it not been for the instructor. I would have. Meanwhile she stood there with a grin on her face. Only reacting after I looked at her."
What kind of monster would do such a thing? Gracie thought.
"What does Jimin have in common with Jin?"
Yoongi cried.
"He fractured his skull, had broken both his arms, and cracked three ribs. His doctor said he was lucky to be alive, falling from a height like that. He was in a coma for six months and in those six months, I never left him."
That didn't answer her question. She remained silent, waiting to see if he would explain.
"I pulled double shifts constantly checking in on him. I would tell him about everything that had been going on. I told him about my friend getting married and my music that I was working on. I slept in the bed next to him when I needed to sleep. I never left him."
"What happened when he woke up?"
Yoongi's eyes fell to his hands.
"I didn't know..."
"Didn't know what?"
"I didn't know that he had feelings for me."
"When he woke up?"
"No."
"I don't understand."
"He was confused about his feelings. He kept a diary. It was hidden in his study. However she had found it. Weeks before we had decided to go Base jumping."
Gracie stared at him stunned.
"Did Jimin know she found his diary?"
Yoongi shook his head.
"She gave it to me after Jimin was hospitalized. Practically threw it at me. She said 'If I can't have him. Neither can you.' That was the last time I saw her."
"So she tried to kill him because she realized that he was falling for you?"
"He was trying to leave her. He just didn't know how. He didn't even know if I felt the same way he did."
"Did you?"
Yoongi sighed, looking over at the door.
"More than anything."
"Then why would you try to be with me knowing he's in that room broken?"
He cut his eyes at her.
"To keep you from making the same mistake I did."
"What? What did you do?"
"It wasn't me who broke him."
"What?"
"He created a life when he was asleep. A life built around us. One that didn't exist. I played along with his fabricated reality. Until I couldn't." Yoongi walked over to the door, peering through the window at Jimin.
"She came back and with three words she shattered his reality."
"Yoongi? What did she say?"
"I love you. She put her hands on his cheeks, staring him lovingly in the eyes and said it. Had it not been for what she did. I would have believed her. But what happened next nearly destroyed me."
Gracie looked through the window at Jimin. He sat in his chair staring out the window.
"I made a butterfly atrium outside his window. He was always very fond of them. He loved everything and everyone and she hated him for it."
"Yoongi. Did he have a seizure like Jin would when this reality didn't match his coma one?"
Yoongi took a deep breath then let it out slowly.
"His eyes shook violently in his head. She wouldn't let him go. His whole body went limp and only then did she let him fall. I caught him and he stared up at me with a blank expression. She repeated herself once again. Leaving us once more."
So was it possible that because she didn't play along with the fabricated memories Jin had. Was it possible that he was fine right now knowing the truth?
Her heart broke for Yoongi. How could she help him? What did the charts mean for Jin?
"I just didn't want you to go through the same thing I went through." He wiped his tears away, his shoulder slumping in exhaustion.
"Why couldn't you just tell me?"
"I miss him."
"That's why you couldn't tell me?"
"No."
"Then why?"
"I wanted to see if there was a way to help Jin differentiate between what truly happened and what didn't. It's just he was so fixated on you, Y/N. What was strange is he didn't recognize you. But when he saw your sister. He thought she was you."
"So Jin was your guinea pig?"
"Why did he think your sister was you?"
"I don't know."
"Did you tell him about her when he was in the coma?"
"No."
"Then how did he confuse her with you?"
"Well we are twins."
Yoongi rolled his eyes.
"Don't be daft. You know as well as I do that she looks nothing like you aside from your hair and maybe your eye color. You two are uniquely different."
"Did you talk about your sister?"
"Once... but I never described her."
"Somebody else talk to Jin?"
Gracie thought about it. She couldn't think of anyone who had come to visit him like she did. Other than Namjoon. But Namjoon didn't know her sister until two months before Jin woke up. Could it have been Namjoon?
"Namjoon?"
"That's possible."
They both stared at each other for a moment. Yoongi broke first, glancing back into the room.
"I wish I knew how to fix him." He placed his hand upon the glass. Gracie put a hand on his shoulder.
"We need to figure out how to help Jin and Hobi first. They are still with us. If we can help them, surely we can get your Jimin back."
"My Jimin?"
Gracie smiled at Yoongi.
"Your Jimin."
