Wasting Time on Word Count
So, many writers don't realize this until after they get into the publishing faze of their writing.
Word Count.
You could have a kick ass query letter for your agent, but if your word count is 240K, you need to do some trimming because 9/10 chances the agent won't accept.
I hate word count.
I just do.
Because I wasted SO much time trying to make my story longer cause I thought it had to reach 240K words or something. All of those extra added parts had to be erased which means hours of work in the trash. I wish I had researched word count BEFORE I had the idea planted in my head that I needed a large word count.
Even though this is a rant book, I want to share with you some valuable information that will ease your mind, and help all of us, here it is, the graph of how long your novel should be:
In short:
80,000 – 89,999: Totally cool
90,000 – 99,999: Generally safe
70,000 – 79,999: Might be too short; probably all right
100,000 – 109,999: Might be too long; probably all right
Below 70,000: Too short
110,000 or above Too long
You see, this is some valuable information. Because Willow's Legend ended at about 50K words, then I added a ton to it and it went to 90K words; which is safe!
But then, I got this IDEA in my head that 90K words was just WAY too short. I thought I had to reach 240K or something!
No! A lot of authors see a big hefty book on a bookshelf and think, "I have to write a massive book!" Like I had thought, really.
But really, those big hefty books are usually around 120K words the most!
So my fellow writers, please do not make the mistake I did and write for hours adding useless information because you think your book needs to 150K words or something. It will save you a lot of time and worry.
*All research on word count was done through varying sites such as Writer's Digest, Ask the Agent, emcastellan.com, The Swivet, and mandyhubbard.livejournal.com.
