Prologue
The rain was dancing on the giant trees in the Rainforest, blocking some of the full moon in the glittering sky. A dragon was pacing in her hut, worried out of her mind thinking about her egg. The RainWing's scales were pale blue as she rattled through her shelfs to find a good scroll to read. What if he gets caught? He wouldn't get to see our egg on the his last night to sneak out. What if our egg hatches?
The small lavender egg on the bed of leaves was rattling like it was trying to break free. When the sliver of moonlight from the window of vines hit the egg, it shone like gems were embedded into it. The lavender egg slowly turned silvery purple while moonlight coated the shell. Crack. A ravine ran down down the egg, then two more. A female dragonet sprung out, ready to take on the world. She looked like a normal RainWing, with a few exceptions. The dragonet was turning blue with curiosity with yellow creeping up the tips of her wings. Though she had a dark blue underbelly and straight horns, she was the most perfect dragonet Bamboo had ever seen. There was the smallest silver scale on each of the edges of her eyes, which made her more beautiful than she already was.
"Bamboo!" A voice whispered. The RainWing leaped back with her fangs ready with venom. Many dragons had been sent to kill her and her egg. But then she saw who it really was. A NightWing was at her doorway, breathing heavily like there was no tomorrow. He's tardy for the hatching.
"Stormchaser! You're late and our dragonet hatched!" She roared. "Since I was here first, I get to name her."
"No fair! You were the one who was watching her! And it was really hard getting out of the NightWing camp." Stormchaser said.
"Well, I have a name for her, and her name is now Crystal." Bamboo said. Her voice was stern, though her expression showed otherwise.
"That's better than what I thought of..." He muttered. A single boom of thunder rang in their ears as Rogue stormed in with four other NightWings. The NightWing general's eyes ran over the dragons, but stopped at Stormchaser.
"We were looking for you. We knew that you were leaving every night, but not to a RainWing," Rogue said with disgust. "Our new queen would hate what you're doing right now. You're lucky that you are an animus. Might as well destroy what you hold dear the most to teach you a lesson."
He glanced at Bamboo and Crystal. "Kill them both," he ordered the group. The Nightwings came forward at the family with claws up and tails thrashing.
"Wait, you're an animus?" Bamboo questioned with a shocked face. But her expression changed into horror as the NightWings came closer to the newborn.
"Bamboo, get out of here!" Stormchaser roared with NightWings shoving against him, trying to get to Crystal and Bamboo. He already had claw marks on his snout and over his eye.
"Not without you!" she shouted as tears threatened her eyes.
"We won't have a family if all of us dies. Do it for our family," he grunted. The NightWings almost shoved through his barracades.
Tears flowed down her face as Bamboo reluctantly fly out into the storm through the window, clutching her dragonet. What had happened to our family?
