Chapter 5
Later on, I check my watch and see it's time for me to go. I say goodbye to Xaiver and head to my car. Couples are hooking up and heading either to their cars or toward the barn. The dirt under my feet crunches and crumbles. I get to my car and unlock the door. On my windshield, a white rose sits.
I pick it up and look at the delicate flower in my hands. The white petals look even whiter in the moonlight, like crisp snow on a cold winter night. The stem has no thorns on it, but it has little stubs where the thorns use to be.
I place the rose on someone's car and hear some giggling. I turn and see...Jenny and Xaiver. They're holding hands and running to Jenny's Mustang. She stops and plants a huge kiss on his lips and giggles.
"I'm so glad that wannabe left," she says huskily, attacking his face with kisses.
Xaiver doesn't answer. He kisses back with his large hands roaming her body. My heart shatters. I don't understand why though. We were never really a couple, just neighbors. I guess that's all we'll ever be. I guess he was bored and wanted a game to play.
Tears form in the corner of my eyes, but I refuse to cry over him. He is nothing more than my neighbor. Nothing more than a classmate. Nothing more but a bad memory. I quickly wipe them away and hop into my car and start the ignition.
I turn on my headlights, and the two of them stop and look at me. Xaiver's eyes widen, and Jenny has a smirk planted on her face. I pull out and drive away before anymore damage is done. I blow out some air and lean back in my seat, feeling tired.
"Way to go, Callie," I mutter in the silence of the car. "First day of school and look what happens."
I get home on time and turn off my car. I sit there in silence for a minute before hopping out and walking inside. Instantly, I'm greeted with slobber and fur. I laugh as my Great Dane, Scooter, licks the mess out of my face.
"Hey, Scooter," I coo. "How's my boy?"
He barks happily in reply, and I rub his head. My mom walks in with sweatpants and an old t-shirt. Her hair is pulled into a messy bun, and her makeup is all gone. Her natural, tan, blemish-free skin, seems soft and older. She smiles at me tiredly.
"Good you're home, I'm going to bed," she says heading toward her room.
I nod. "That's probably a good idea," I agree.
I rub Scooter's head once more and head to my room. My room is such a cozy place to me. The walls are a cozy neutral color with random doodles and celebrities plastered on each wall. My queen sized bed sits next to the entrance and the closet door. Across from my bed is my desk covered in papers and pencils. Next to my desk is my dresser.
I set my bag on the dresser and open a drawer. I pull out some sweatpants and an old shirt and change. I throw my curly hair into a ponytail and walk into the bathroom. I remove the day's dirt and makeup and brush my teeth. Once my breath is minty fresh, I walk into my bedroom and crawl into bed and turn off the lights.
I close my eyes, wanting to escape to dreamland, but all I see is Jenny and Xaiver lip locked. My eyes fly open, and tears threaten to escape. One traitor slides down my cheek. I wipe it away and sniffle.
"Why do bad things happen to good people?" I wonder aloud.
Expecting no answer, I stare up at the ceiling and sigh. I hear a car pulling into the driveway next door, and the door slam. Xaiver is home. I grit my teeth as more tears fall down my face. Why am I feeling this way? Boys are stupid. Boys are complicated. Boys are boys.
I wipe the remaining tears and close my eyes, letting sleep overtake me.
