Chapter 4
I look at the clock, seeing that my shift is almost over. I smile to myself, knowing that I'll be able to hang with the crew. I start untying my apron when the bell rings. Sighing quietly, I put on a smile and turn around.
"Miss Jennson?" I ask, slightly shock.
Her green eyes flicker to mine in recognition. "Hello, Carly?" she says unsure.
"Callie," I correct.
"Ah, Callie. Sorry, I'm still getting use to names, but I'll have them all down by the end of the year," she chuckles.
I smile slightly and nod. "Anyway, what can I get you?"
She takes a look at the menu and purses her lips. "May I get a small vanilla latte and three peanut butter cookies?"
"Of course. That'll be $4.50," I tell her.
She hands me a five, and I give her the change. I walk to the kitchen and prepare her latte and cookies. I put the cookies in a cute little box and hand her both of her items.
"See you tomorrow," I say with a smile.
"See you then," she replies, walking toward the door.
I blow out some air and untie my apron. "Alright Mom, I'm clockin' out!" I call out.
"Alright Cal. Be home before ten!" she calls back.
I nod to myself and grab my bag. I jump into my car and drive to the old barn. I drive up to a rocky road surrounded by trees. I drive down it, and the gravel slips and jumps under the tires. The gravel turns into dirt and grass, and cars start coming into view. I park near a yellow Volks Wagon Bug and turn off the engine.
I hop out of my car and lock the door. Breathing in the cool summer air, I take in my surroundings. Tall lanky aspen trees reach the sky with their glorious wonder. The sun is setting, which gives the sky an orange pinkish glow. Clouds stretch out across the sky, making the sky kinda look like an artist's masterpiece.
I sigh in content and hear the bass pumping through someone's car speakers. My teeth vibrate with each step closer to the noise. A crowd of people come into view, and I take a quick look at myself in a red Mustang car window . A white tank top with a blue button-up cardigan, blue bootleg jeans, and gray Toms is my approval of an outfit. My black curly hair falls loosely under my chest.
Smiling at my appearance, I walk toward the large crowd of people. A large black Hummer sits near the barn with all of the doors open, blaring music. Surrounding the hummer, sweaty teens dance around with red plastic cups in their hands. A little ways from the dancing, a large bonfire is being set up.
A girl, with red highlights in her blond hair, stumbles up to me giggling. Alcohol is fresh on her breath as she throws her arm around my shoulders.
"Don't eat the yellow snow!" she giggles.
I chuckle and remove her arm from my shoulders. She stumbles to the ground with her drink spilling on her tight shirt. She continues to laugh and just lays there. I stare at her for a few minutes before shaking my head.
"She's gonna feel like crap in the morning," I think.
I see the snobs grinding against some jocks while dancing. I hear my name being called and I look around.
"Callie!" a familiar voice calls. I look and see Xaiver jogging up to me.
"Hey!" I greet as he crushes me in a hug.
"I was wondering if you were gonna show or not," he admits, grinning at me.
"Well, I'm here," I say, laughing at the end.
He grins and puts his hand on the small of my back, leading me towards the old, worn-out, barn. Some people nod and smile at Xaiver and I as we pass by.
"Yo, Xaiver!" a guy named, Josh, yells to Xaiver.
"Josh! What's up man?"
"Nothin' much, bro," he replies with a smile.
Xaiver smiles back, and we continue walking.
"Xaivy!" a familiar voice calls. We turn around and see Jenny in a tight, short, leather skirt, a hot pink crop top, and impossible high heels. Her make up is caked all over her face, yet she looks like a friggin' model.
I snicker under my breath. "Xaivy."
Xaiver sends me a look, and he forces a smile toward Jenny. "Hey, Jenny. What's up?"
She finally reaches us, looks at me for a minute, before flirting with Xaiver. "Not a lot. I was wondering if you'd like to catch up on some things," she says with a flirty tone.
I watch as she bats her eyelashes, twirls her hair, and bites her red lips. Xaiver takes a glance at me and chuckles a bit.
"Maybe later, Jenny. I'm hanging with Callie for a while," Xaiver answers.
I see Jenny's uptight, flirty smile falter a bit, and she sends a sharp look to me before looking back at Xaiver.
"Alright. Just meet me behind the barn," she says, walking away and slightly swaying her hips.
"Let's hang out, Xaivy," I mock. His cheeks turn pink in embarrassment.
"Come on," he mutters, leading me away.
I see the bonfire is now burning brightly, with the bright flames licking at the logs. The heat brushes onto my exposed skin as we make our way to it.
"Remember when our parents would get together and have bonfires in our backyards?" Xaiver asks, shoving his hands into his pockets.
"And you would always steal mine and your brother's s'mores," I finish with a smile.
He laughs and looks down. "Yeah."
We stand in a comfortable silence, the only sounds of the softening music, chatter, and the flickering flames present. A kid in my science class walks around with a box of goodies.
"Are you hungry?" Xaiver asks, looking intently at me.
"Sure. I mean, I could eat," I answer. He smiles.
"Cool, I'll be back," he states, walking towards the kid.
I smile and bite my lip, feeling like a giddy second grader with a crush on the boy who shares his cookies. My giddiness is cut short when a mimicking voice is behind me.
"'Sure. I mean, I could eat.' Please, can you get any needier?" Jenny says disgusted.
I turn around and look at Jenny. "What do you want, Jenny?" I ask tiredly.
"Nothing. Just wondering when you'll stop being a prude and reveal your true self to Xaiver," she answers snobbishly.
I purse my lips in annoyance. "Why are you so worried about what Xaiver and I do? He's not yours. You don't own him," I snap.
She glares at me. "Xaiver and I have something special, and I don't need rodents like you to get in the way."
I roll my eyes. "Go make out with some football player or something, I'm done," I snipe bitterly, then turn back to the fire.
I hear a gasp and heels pounding into the ground. I smile victoriously to myself, then hear slow claps behind me. I turn and see a group of students grinning and clapping.
"You tell her!" a guy, Kyle from my math class, cheers. People come up to me and pat me on the back.
A beam dances onto my face. Xaiver jogs up to me with s'mores in both hands.
"I saw what you did," he states.
"You did?" I ask, slightly embarrassed.
"Oh yeah. And it was awesome!" he cheers.
I smile. He hands me a s'more and bites into his. I bite into mine, feeling triumphant.
