chapter one !

June stood in the crowd, her fingers crossed that her name wouldn't be called. Her name was in there more than ten times but she had hope that her name might not be announced.

"Ladies first." A voice called, then his hand reaching into the glass bowl with folded papers scattered inside. Juniper shut her eyes and crossed her fingers — praying to god.

"Willow Wildsong." The microphone echoes. Juniper shoots her head up when she realises who was called. It was her sister.

"I volunteer!" She instantly yells not even thinking. All eyes are now on her, and all hope had disappeared.

The orange haired girl walks slowly to the middle where the guards all lined up.

Without any hesitation, she walks down the ile and her sister watches her tears starting to flow. "June!" Willow gasps, pushing past the crowd.

"You can't!" Willow runs to try and stop her sister. "Wills. It's okay." She reassured her sister holding her hands.

The guards grab ahold of Willow and forcefully pull her back, she cries as she's held back.

Juniper continues to walk, a small snake slithers down her arms and around her right wrist.

She walks slowly and heard the whispers of the girls who would make fun of her at the village.

She sneaks up behind one of them, specifically the mayor's daughter and lets the snake move into the girls dress. The girl starts to squirm and cry as the snake moves around her.

"Help her!" The mayor commands to the peacekeepers, "Somebody help her now!" A smirk appeared on June's lips as she watches the girl cry for help and she feels the snake slithering.

June fell to the ground when the mayor slapped her in the face as soon as she got to the stage. The air filled with gasps.

The mayor was dragged off by two peacekeepers. June stopped Jessup — the male tribute, as he moved forwards to assist her by raising her hand.

"You can't take my past." Lucy Gray Barid, Juniper's long time best friend, started to sing within the crowd of people, and the other Covey members followed after.

"You can't take my history. You could take my pa, but his name is a mystery."

"Nothing you can take from me was ever worth keeping." Willow chimes in with Lucy, both looking at each other and nodding.

"Nothing you can take was ever worth keeping." June remains on the ground and sings.

Juniper lifted her head gently and fixed her gaze on the camera. She stood back up and moved to take a position behind the microphone.

"You can't take my charm, you can't take my humour, you can't take my wealth, 'cause it's just a rumour."

"Nothing you can take was ever worth keeping. You can't take my sass. You can't take my talking." She paused.

She looked away from the group and then at the camera, her face red with rage. "You can kiss my ass!" Juniper yells in rage.

Everyone is crowd gasps as they react to her rude remarks, Willow and Lucy Gray laugh at her antics.

With a sly smile on her face, June walked away from the camera and bent her arms out in front of the crowd, causing gasps to fill the room.

With a persistent sneer she said, "C'mon boys." strolling besides the peacekeepers, she says.

"Yo, you ready for this?" Jessup asked, as the peacekeepers gently pulled them away from the crowd.

June let out a laugh and responded,"Hell nah, you think I'm ready for this madness?"

chapter one is complete ! i wrote this chapter pretty quickly because of how short it is, then again it is only the beginning. enjoy before the chaos begins.
