Chapter 2-Basketball Craziness
"Come on Amelia!" I yell at her racing around the track on a chariot with the other half bloods.
Karlos and Amelia are in first place. They are on the chariot together.
"GO KARLOS!" Hannah screams in my ear.
I put my hand over my ear and say, "That was my ear!"
"Sorry, just cheering for my brother," she tells me.
I smile at her. I notice Declan standing slightly behind Hannah. She looks behind her and rolls her eyes. "He's always been near me since he came here," she whispers to me.
"Seems to me that he has a crush on you," I whisper back.
"Aw man," she says. "I doubt it though. I'm not that pretty."
"Excuse me!" I say sassily. "You are very pretty, my dear."
She smiles at me. "Thanks," she says.
I notice Declan coming over to her. He taps her on the shoulder and says, "I like your hair."
Hannah turns around and says, "Thanks."
Declan leaves quickly. "He must really be shy," I tell her, focusing my attention back on the race.
Amelia and Karlos won the race. "Yes Amelia!" I yell.
The crowd disperses as I walk over to Amelia. "Great job!" I tell her.
"Thanks," she says.
"Hannah! I finally won a race!" Karlos says.
"That's awesome, Karlos!" Hannah says to him.
"I know! It was fun too," he says, grinning. "You want to train with me?"
Hannah nods and leaves me with Amelia. She smiles at me and I smile back. She winks and I don't know why. "Um Amelia-" I start to say but someone's arms wrap around me.
They pick me up and I catch a glance of blonde hair. "Hunter!" I yell.
"Yes?" he whispers in my ear.
I blush. He starts running.
"Where are we going?" I yell.
"Nowhere," he says.
"We are too!" I say. He starts flying with me in his arms. We finally set down at the basketball courts.
"You want to play basketball?" I ask.
"Yeah," he says, rubbing the back of his neck.
"So you had to fly me here?" I ask, frowning.
"Yeah," he says, blushing. "Did I do something wrong?"
"No," I say before bursting out laughing.
"What's so funny?" Hunter asks, a hurt expression on his face.
"Oh, it was nothing, just that your face was priceless!" I say, giggling.
He frowns at me and says, "Whatever."
I grab the basketball and face Hunter.
"One on one?" I ask.
"Yeppers," he says.
"OK," I say and we pass the basketball back and forth.
I catch the ball and start dribbling it. I start running around Hunter, but he gets in my way. He tries to hit it while I am dribbling it, but I move out of the way and say, "No!"
He tackles me and I land on top of him. I blush and he smirks. "Do you like what you are doing?" he asks me.
"No!" I say, even though I do.
I get off him and stand up. I run and get the ball and I stop dribbling and try to shoot but it was way off. I face-palm myself and Hunter runs and grabs the basketball. I run after him and block his shot. I hit it it out of the air and run after it. I grab it and dribble it down the court. I start to shoot but Hunter rams into me. I fall to the ground as a person says, "Can I play- Carmen!"
"Oof!" I say as I hit the ground. I turn over, groaning.
"Why'd you do that?" I ask Hunter.
"I wanted the ball," he exclaims.
"You OK, Carmen?" a girls voice says. I look up and see Hannah and Declan right behind her.
"Yeah, sure," I say as I get up.
"We were wondering if we can play," Declan says as Hannah jumps at his voice.
"Yep. Lets do girls against guys, though," Hunter says. Hannah and I fist bump.
"We can do this Hannah!" I say and she nods, grinning.
"I call guarding Carmen!" Hunter says immediately.
"That leaves me guarding Hannah," Declan says, taking off his sweatshirt to reveal a T-shirt that states,"FOB."
"It was getting a little hot out here," he says noticing my staring.
"Okie dokie! Let's get started!" I say, high-fiving Hannah.
Hannah and Declan pass the ball to each other and I start guarding Hunter. Hannah dribbled the ball around Declan, barely getting past his swiping hands.
"Swiper no swiping!" I say, remembering that phrase from seeing it on a TV when I was littler. Declan bursts out laughing and so does Hannah.
Declan steals the ball from Hannah and trys to shoot it to the basket. It hits the rim and bounces off. I catch the ball and start dribbling it down the court. I fake a shot and pass it to Hannah. Declan catches it instead of her and he dribbles down the court.
Hunter pushes me and says, "Get out of here!"
"No!" I say and push him back.
I sprint down the court and Hunter follows me. Declan shoots and he makes it. "Yes!" Declan yells and he high fives Hunter.
Declan actually yelled? He barely talks at all. "Hannah," I say and she comes to me.
We huddle and I say, "We need to step up our game. I'm not letting those boys win."
"I'm not either," she says. "But what are we going to do?"
"I don't know," I tell her. Just then, three people show up at the edge of the basketball court.
"Who's there?" I ask, pulling out my dagger. They come out of the shadows and I see Nico, Gia, and Jeremiah. "Oh, its just you."
Nico look like he is going to pass out.
"Dad?" I hear Raphael say and runs to him, supporting him.
"I'm fine, son," Nico says quietly.
Raphael must have been close to the courts. Raphael leads Nico to the infirmary as Gia and Jeremiah comes to us. "Nice to meet you," Gia says and shakes my hand.
I shake back and say, "Pleasure."
"What are you guys doing?" Jeremiah asks.
"Playing basketball," I tell them. "You want to play?"
They both nod. "We are doing boys against girls," Hannah says to Gia and Jeremiah.
They nod. Gia walks over to us and I say, "We need a game plan."
Gia thinks for a minute and says, "OK. Carmen, you should have the ball first and then fake shoot it but actually pass it to..."
"The name's Hannah," Hannah says.
"Pass it to Hannah and she will pass it back to you because you moved to a different place. Then you can throw it to me and I will be by the basket and I will throw it and I will hope it makes it," Gia explains.
"Awesome!" I exclaim and Hannah agrees. We high five and I get ready to pass it back and forth with Hunter.
"Do you have a plan?" I hear Gia ask Jeremiah.
"Nope. We are just going to play it by luck," he says and Gia, Hannah, and I grin at each other.
I pass it to Hunter and he passes it back two more times. I catch it the last time and he comes running at me. I fake shoot it and then pass it to Hannah. I start moving to a different part of the court as Hannah runs to the passing line. She passes it back to me and I spin around and shoot it at Gia.
She is right where she said she was going to be. She catches the ball and shoots it and it makes a swisher. The boys look at us like we are crazy.
"What?" we ask the boys.
"That was crazy good!" Jeremiah says and we burst out laughing.
