..THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY
ADAM
10:20 AM
Adam Cook saw her, and his heart leaped.
She looked wonderful even if she did look tired on the white back yard bench, no cigarette, not even a cup in her hand. She just downed a pill, drinking from a plastic water bottle.
She was dressed in total black, and her copper hair seemed on fire with the contrast.
So she had a crush on the CEO. So he was just a pathetic IT man, wearing the cheapest shirt ever today, and his car was probably less expensive than a single one of LeRoy cufflinks.
And she was looking up to LeRoy's window, again.
You know what, the hell with it — I don't care.
Adam stood in resolution. Cooper watched him with a satisfied smirk.
EDGAR
10:21 AM
As soon as he entered his office, Edgar took a quick look outside the window, while he was still taking off his suit jacket. When he saw McKenna there, he hesitated, the jacket still in his hand. It was plain she was still ill, but she was there anyway. He had thought in the days before that wearing white enhanced her paleness; actually, with black things were even worse.
Her skin was almost alabaster. Her hair was perfect.
The top of the knitted jersey she was wearing fell off her shoulder as she looked up.
Me and this McKenna Dunne – we definitely have a problem.
He didn't know what the problem was, but he felt quite eager to find out.
MCKENNA
10:22 AM
McKenna had forced herself into going to work that day. She still had a fever, her body still ached, and her throat was no better. But at least the aspirin had done its job of getting her out of the bed. She couldn't afford to lose another day.
Maybe it was the illness, but that day she was feeling acutely hopeless when she raised her head and looked up at the closed reflective window of LeRoy's office.
She stared at the water bottle in her hand.
Maybe Olivia is right. Maybe this is not healthy. Maybe I should give it a cut.
McKenna stoop up, and headed back into her office
ADAM/EDGAR
10:28 AM
Edgar LeRoy entered the backyard with two cups of coffee in his hands. They were ceramic little cups, not the anonymous paper cups one could find in every office. His hair was black and shiny and perfectly brushed back, his grey eyes were a little wider than usual, his pupils dilated as usual. His white shirt was masterfully ironed, the line of his suit pants impeccable.
This was the scene Adam Cook saw, and he had to surrender; LeRoy was not really the kind of man he wanted to be, but he was handsome in his genre.
Adam Cook entered the backyard with two of those anonymous paper cups you could find in every office in his hands. His skinny ripped jeans made him look thin like a teenager, the shirt he was wearing was definitely cheap, his brown hair fell over his eyes.
This was the view Edgar LeRoy was seeing, and he had to admit, Cook was really not the kind of man he wanted to be, but wearing that shirt instead of a Star Wars T made him look a little more decent.
The two men stared at each other.
The situation was ridiculous and there was no way of misunderstanding it.
Two men, zero McKenna Dunne, a void bench, and four coffees.
Tie break.
Edgar bit his lower lip.
Adam let out an amazed laugh.
Without knowing what else to do, they both sat on the opposite sides of the bench. They didn't drink from the cups they'd brought at first, nor did they talk.
Then, Adam broke the silence.
"Is that Nespresso coffee? The one that just you big bosses can afford to have in your office?"
"It is," Edgar replied. He pondered the situation, then he handed one of the ceramic little cups to Adam Cook. "Here. I suppose you can have it."
Adam Cook accepted the cup, and took a sip.
"Wow – this is so much better."
"What have you brought her?" Edgar LeRoy hinted at the paper cups.
"Cappuccino from the beverage vending machine."
"I think I've never tried it, actually."
Adam chuckled, and handed him one of the paper cups.
"Well, there's always a first time."
Edgar took the cup from Adam's hand, and took the first sip.
"Fuck. This is disgusting."
"It is, isn't it?"
Thank God it was Friday.
