High fevers that came and went, and being able to attend school for more than half of the day before getting sent home. These were only two of many concerning situations that began to trouble the Lawless household.
With Blackie being on the road constantly or recording in the studio until 3 am, it was difficult for his wife to get in touch with him to let him know about their daughter's unknown illness.
"Can I go to school mama? I feel better now." (Y/N) drowsily asked, as she was still laying in her makeshift bed on the living room couch.
"I'm sorry baby girl but you can't go to school this week. I know how much you want to go back, but you're going to have to rest for awhile." Matilda, her mother, replied kindly. Each and every day was beginning to get more unbearable as she watched the health of her young daughter slowly deteriorating away.
She took (Y/N) to doctor after doctor trying to figure out what was going on inside of the little 2nd grader. But as fate seemed to fail, each doctor replied with the same diagnosis, "We couldn't find anything major going on with (Y/N). She's just having a regular case of the common cold." In the back of Matilda's mind, she knew that those doctors were only looking at her and her daughter's status in the celebrity world, and also at her wallet. Having a mother's intuition she knew that there was something horribly wrong going on inside of her sweet, little girl. She just didn't know what it was, and was too scared to find out the ugly truth.
Matilda smiled lovely and kissed her daughter's forehead before adjusting her yellow and pink quilt.
"Mama, can I talk to daddy please? I miss him." She looked up at her worried mother with her patient, pretty eyes. Her eyes were as beautiful as her father's eyes.
Her mother sighed softly and nodded. "We can try again (Y/N). Let's cross our fingers and hope he picks the phone." She leant over (Y/N) and grabbed the white, rotary-dial phone from its place on the small wooden table that was next to the couch. (Y/N) closed her eyes, scrunched her cute little nose and crossed her fingers as Matilda dialed in her husband's phone number. She couldn't help but smile at how adorable her baby girl looked as she waited for the operator to connect the landlines together.
~~~~~~ In Tucson, Arizona~~~~~
"Alright guys I think this just about wraps it up. We can work more on the guitar solo tomorrow." Blackie said while removing his bass guitar. Today had been a fulfilling day for him and the rest of W.A.S.P. With three days until they're next tour, Blackie's schedule was booked with multiple interviews, music videos, and band rehearsals.
Wiping the sweat from his forehead with a towel, he grinned happily at his manager who was walking at a steady pace up to him. Blackie tilted his head to the side and frowned softly as he noticed that his manager was oddly silent as he continued to approach him.
"Hey, what's up Benny I haven't seen you this upset before. Are you still mad at us for that prank we pulled on you yesterday?" Blackie asked while playfully hitting Benny's shoulder with the towel.
Benny could have cared less about the prank from yesterday; right now there was something more important he had to tell Blackie, it wasn't going to be easy.
"Blackie.... There's something very very important that I need to tell you." He said in a stern but sad voice. This stopped Blackie's playful actions as a serious look fell upon his face.
"What is it? What happened!?" He replied quickly.
Blackie watched as a few tears rolled down Benny's face. His heart began beating one mile an hour. "Your wife just called and... and she said that (Y/N) is not doing well. Matilda really wants to speak with you, son. She's on hold on the break room phone." Benny wiped his tears away as Blackie threw his towel down, and bolted to the break room.
"Woah! What's going on? What happened to Blackie, Benny?" Randy asked curiously as he walked into the recording room.
"His daughter is not doing too good. Matilda's afraid she's not going to live for long..." Benny said as slowly shook his head.
Blackie was in the break room a moment later. He quickly picked up the phone from its place beside its stand, and began sputtering out what Benny had just told him. "Is it true Matilda? I'm very sorry for getting caught up in my work, and neglecting you and (Y/N)." Blackie covered part of his face with his free hand as he fought back the tears threatening to fall.
"It's okay honey, I just wish you knew this before she started to get worse. Yes, it is true Blackie. (Y/N) hasn't been to school for a month now; she was having stomach aches on and off when she was at school earlier this month. I told her principal to let me take her home so that she would have some time to recover. But that's it started to get worse." Matilda moved from her place next to (Y/N), and was now standing in the kitchen with a stream of tears sliding down her cheeks.
Her husband sat in silence as he listened intently to every word coming from his wife.
"From that day until now, I've been taking her to the doctors to find out what's wrong with her; but they all kept saying she has a cold or the flu. I don't believe them Blackie, I could tell by the look in all of those doctors' eyes that there is something far more worse going on inside of our baby girl. Blackie I don't want to lose her!" She swiftly covered her mouth before a whimper of sadness could escape. The late thing she wanted was to worry her little girl.
"Oh my god.... Matilda, I wish was there with the two of you right now. I- I don't want to lose (Y/N). Damn it how could I have been so stupid to leave both of you out of the picture. I'm coming home right now; I've abandoned you and (Y/N) for too long." He exhaled shakily while rubbing pained tears out of his eyes.
"Mama... may I talk to daddy now?"
"Sure sweetie, here I come."
Blackie's heart dropped to his feet as he heard the angelic voice of his little daughter over the phone. More tears rolled down his face as he heard his wife hand the phone to (Y/N).
"Hi daddy! How are you? I miss you so much, when are you coming home?" She practically bubbled over with joy as she was now able to talk to her father.
"Hi beautiful! I'm doing great. I miss both you and your mother very much. I'm coming home right now it's going to be a few days until I'm home though. Until then I want you to be a good girl, and help your mother out. Can you do that for me?" Blackie said as he smiled sadly. He wanted nothing more in the world then to be at home right now with his wife and daughter.
The voice of (Y/N) brought him back to reality as he heard her repeatedly calling his name. "Daddy, I'll be a good and I'll help mama too. I haven't been feeling good either too, but I'm doing a lot better now!" She said before coughing a little.
"Make sure you cover your mouth sweetie." Your mother kindly told you.
"Yes, mama."
"(Y/N) honey, I love you very much and I can't wait to see your pretty face again." Blackie smiled one more time at his daughter's cuteness before saying. "Is it alright if I talk to mama again? I promise I'll talk to you too afterwards."
"It's okay daddy. I love you too very very much!" You handed the phone back to your mother and she gently took it from you.
"Matilda, darling I'm leaving on the next flight home tonight. I can't bear to leave my girls alone any longer." He said as he ran his free hand through his black hair.
"Please come home soon, baby. We really need you. I love you." Matilda looked at you before giving you butterfly kisses all over your face. You squealed in happiness and hugged her tight.
"I love you too Matilda. I'll be praying tonight."
"So will I."
~~~~~~~~~~~~ Two days later~~~~~~~~
From the last time Matilda and Blackie had spoken with each other, your fever had returned and the pinching feeling in your stomach was worse than before, but it still occurred every now and then.
The heavens were flooded with an array stars tonight. Looking out your bedroom window from your place in bed, you counted each little star that twinkled brightly in the sky. You yawned softly and snuggled into your sheets as sleep began to overtake your senses. Just as your eyes fluttered shut a fluctuating wave of pain moved through your body, causing you to seize up and cry. Hearing the sounds of distress coming from her young daughter's room, Matilda was in your room in a flash.
"Mama, my tummy hurts again." You whimpered as you tried to sit up in bed. Your mother walked towards you and sat next to you; she wrapped her arms around your tiny body and held you close.
"I'm sorry your stomach hurts (Y/ N). I'm taking you to the doctor." She said as tears began form in her green eyes again. Matilda picked you up and grabbed your purple coat, that was inside your closet, and began to walk out of your room. As she made it into the living room the phone started ringing. Taking a mini detour from her way to the garage, she answered the phone while still holding you close.
"Hello?"
"Hello, Matilda. This is Blackie. I'm back in (H/T) and I'll be home in a few minutes."
"Hi Blackie. I'm taking (Y/N) to the hospital again, her stomach is back again." Matilda said worriedly, as tears were now falling down her face.
"Oh no... Which hospital are you taking her to? I'll meet you there." He asked, worry and fear was evident in his voice as he waited for your mother to reply.
"I'm taking (Y/N) to the pediatric hospital that's three miles away from home."
"I'm on my way there right now."
~~~~~
Matilda buckled you into your car seat before getting into the drivers seat. The entire car ride was silent as you had fallen asleep on your way to the hospital. After parking, your mother rushed around to your side of the car, and quickly but gently removed you from your car seat.
She rushed into the E.R. and right up to the nurses desk. "Hello, my little girl is having pain in her stomach again and I'm afraid it's gotten worse."
"Alright Mrs. Lawless, you can just fill out these forms first then I'll let Doctor Bryson know-." Your mother quickly shook head which made the nurse immediately stop talking and loudly exhale an annoyed sigh.
"I'm sorry but there's no time for that, and I already know what Doctor Bryson is going say. Is there another doctor here who I go to?" She asked. You began to cry quietly as you felt the pain slowly coming back again. This only triggered your mother's desperation and anger further as she watched the nurse in front of her roll her eyes sarcastically. Matilda tensed up in defense, for both you and herself, as she lowered her voice to just a whisper and hunched over the nurse's desk further to keep their conversation private from the everyone else in the lobby.
"I do not appreciate your attitude towards my situation! All I want to know is if there is another doctor working besides Doctor Bryson, and the only thing you do is roll your eyes at me. I-." Your mother jumped a little when she suddenly felt someone's large hand on her shoulder.
Turning around, her heart fluttered in joy and relief as she seen that it was Blackie.
"Ma'am, if all your going to do is roll your eyes at people and treat them like crap then you should work at the diner that's down the street. My wife asked if there is another doctor here who can actually help our daughter. Is there?" He said in a firm voice, a frown evident on his face. The nurse flushed from embarrassment and began to frantically look through the disheveled paper on her desk to find the work schedule of all the doctors.
"I'm s-sorry, Mr. Lawless, about the unnecessary wait. Yes, there- is another doctor working, his name is Doctor Stark. I'll let him know that your daughter needs immediate attention." The nurse stuttered as her fingers fumbled to dial the extension number to the doctor's phone.
"I don't think it's me who you need to apologize to." Blackie gave the bleach-blonde nurse an unamused look as he gently took you from your mother's arms, and held you lovingly in his arms.
The young woman hesitantly flicked her eyes from Blackie's to Matilda's, who gazed ashamedly at her. "I'm very sorry ma'am." The nurse said as she fidgeted uncomfortably in her seat, knowing full well that she was wrong.
"It's alright, I forgive you." Your mother sighed quietly as her husband wrapped his arm around her waist, and lead them towards the waiting room.
You were fast asleep on Blackie's left shoulder as your mother rested her head against his right. "I'm glad I made it here in time; that woman was giving you a hard time for no reason." He spoke in a hushed voice since the waiting room was so spacious, and a few more people were sitting in there with them.
"We're glad to have you with us again, honey. From the time (Y/N) had come from school with a simple stomach ache to now, she has wanted you to be by her side." Matilda smiled weakly as she looked at your small sleeping body.
Blackie closed his eyes as he gently rubbed your back and rested the side of his face against the back of your head. "Poor baby, I feel like I haven't been there for you and (Y/N). I wish I knew sooner that she wasn't doing well. I'm sorry Matilda." He said, tears began to surface once more in his blue eyes as he looked at Matilda. She bit her lip to keep from crying as well as she leaned closer to Blackie, placed a hand on the side of his face and pressed a sweet kiss on his cheek.
"It's not your fault Blackie. You were on the road with your band and working, I knew you were thinking about us always." She whispered.
A small smile appeared on his face and just as he was about speak, a brunette nurse holding a clipboard came through the large, white, metal doors that led to the ER.
"Mr. and Mrs. Lawless, I'm very sorry that you had to wait. If you'll both follow me, I'll take you to
(Y/N)'s room." She said. Your parents stood up, Blackie slowly rose to his feet so that his sudden moments wouldn't wake you, and followed the nurse down the many hallways in the ER until they arrived in a room for pediatric patients.
"Doctor Stark should be here in a few minutes. If (Y/N) needs anything, just press the red button next to her bed it will let the other staff know if you need help." The nurse said with a calming smile. Matilda smiled back and and thanked her before she left.
~~~~~~~~~
"Well, it's unfortunate to have you here again (Y/N), but let's get you fixed up so you can go home soon." The brown haired doctor said as he finished reading over your medical history chart.
After your parents explained your current situation to him, he began to piece together possible reasons for why you weren't doing too well. Blackie held his wife's hand as they waited intently for the doctor's next decision.
"So to really find out what's been going on with Miss (Y/N), we're going to have to X-ray her. It'll only be a few moments, and hopefully we'll see what's happening." Doctor Stark told your parents.
~~~After the X-ray~~~~
"Blackie, do you think she'll be alright? I hate that I keep doubting myself, but I just can't help myself." Matilda said as she wiped her tears away. Blackie reached out and wrapped his arms around her as she placed her head on his shoulder.
"Our little girl will be okay, and don't hate yourself either. I've been worried since I got your phone call a few days ago." Blackie smoothed his hands up and down her arms as he tried his best to not cry again.
About two minutes later, the doctor and a nurse came back into the room with you. They placed you in your bed again and tucked you in before the doctor turned towards Blackie and Matilda with an uneasy look.
"Well, we have two X-rays. The first one showed that there was some swelling around (Y/N)'s lower stomach area, and in the second X-ray, if you'll look closely, you can see that her appendix is almost twice its original size." Doctor Stark said while showing your X-rays to your parents.
A weight was lifted off of their shoulders knowing that, even though this was serious, it was something that could be resolved. Now that your mother knew that you had appendicitis, her blood boiled over with fact that all the doctors she had spoken to before lied about the severity of your health.
"Oh my god, how soon can she have surgery to remove her appendix?" Blackie asked, concern was laced in his voice.
"We're actually going to have to do tonight, but at the same time it may be a risky operation." The doctor explained.
Blackie nodded as tears slid down his face; his wife had left her place next to him and sat on the side of your bed gently stroking your (H/C) hair.
"I understand completely how both of you feel. But it'll be the best thing to do in order to save (Y/N)'s life."
Matilda and her husband looked at each other, and without speaking, they both understood that this would be the right choice to make.
But with how critical your situation was, they knew that there was a 80 to 50 chance that you would survive the operation and be able to live a happy life once more, or slowly drift far away from them into a never ending, dreamless sleep....
